O you who reproached me for my faults

خل الزمان إذا تقاعس أو نجح

Whether time passes lazily or successfully,

شهدت لنا كبد ترق كما

A liver that quivers like a moth attested

أبشر بفتح لك مفتوح

Rejoice in the conquest opened for you

يا مانعي قوت جسمي

O you who deny me the strength of my body

الحب ريحان المحب وراحه

Love is the sweet basil of the lover, his comfort,

لابن أبي الجهم وجه سوء

To the son of Abu al-Jahm, of ugly face,

يا ذا الذي لو هجاه مادحه

O you who if praised would have been punished, why not rewarded for praise?

أما الزمان إلى سلمى فقد جنحا

Time passed peacefully with Salma,

يا قمرا فوق رأسه تاج

O moon above his head a crown

شجو قلبي من سائر الخلق شاجي

My heart's passion for her surpasses all people's passion

يا ويح من أصبح في غمة

Oh woe to him who wakes in gloom

برضاب ثغرك يستغيـث

With your smile's light, a lover pleads,

وقائلة بالنصح لم لا تزوج

A woman advising me to marry

شرب البيهقي والبين ناء

The ignorant drank with joy

يا أحمد ابن أبيه ويا ربيب حريث

O Ahmad, son of his father

دعني وإيا أبي علي الأعور المعور الخبيث

Leave me and my father Ali

لهفي على مودة

Yearning for an affection

بليت بفلتة فضحكت فلته

You were upset by a joke, so I laughed

له قرون سمقت في العلا

He has horns that reached into the sky's heights

تدارك وهبا كلام استه

His words came to his aid as a gift

تنفس في وجهي فكدت أموت

He breathed in my face and I almost died

مدحتكم طمعا فيما أؤمله

I praised you out of greed for what I hoped for

تجنت فقال الكاشحون تجنت

They blamed me when I was merry, and said I was too joyous;

كم يعز المفضل المبخوت ويبز المحبب المنعوت

How the outcast is despised, the disgraced abased

صبرا على أشياء كلفتها أعقبتها الآن وسلفتها

I have endured things I was charged with,

ظبيك يا ذا حسن وجهه

Your beauty, O one with a beautiful face

أصبحت في محن للدهر أعظمها

Roses are red, violets are blue

كيف يرجو الحياء منه صديق

How can a friend hope for shyness from him

وما قتل بعض الحي بعضا بناهك

Some lives lost fighting each other

قالوا اشتكت عينه فقلت لهم

They said his eye was hurting, so I said to them:

أرضى بصورته وصد فأغضبا

He was pleased with his image and barred, so the lover became blissful yet tormented

ذكرتك حين ألقت بي عصاها

I remembered you when adversity cast its spear at me,

أبا إسحاق لا تغضب فأرضى

O Abu Ishaq, do not be angry, so I may be pleased

قالوا ابن يوسف مستوه فقلت لهم

They said the son of Joseph is even-tempered, so I said to them,

إذا دام للمرء السواد ولم تدم

If a man's black hair endures though his freshness fades away,

خالد أم وأنت أب

Khalid is the mother, and you are the father,

بدا الشيب في رأسي فجلى عمايتي

Gray hairs have appeared in my head, revealing my blindness,

هبك الفرات الذي بالروم مطلعه

The Euphrates whose source is in Rome waters you,

صبا من شاب مفرقه تصابي

Youth is gone, though passion still ignites,

صفا لك شرب العيش غير مثرب

A life of joy and ease is yours, untroubled

بدر وشمس ولدا كوكبا

A moon and sun begot a planet,

حماه الكرى هم سرى فتأوبا

Secret sorrow has protected it, so it tossed about

نفرٌ من الخلطاءِ والأصحابِ

A group of friends and companions

دع اللوم إن اللوم عون النوائب

Blame me not, for blame does not ease calamity,

أسالم قد سلمت من العيوب

My Islam, you are safe from defects

وهب يا واهب الهبات اللواتي

Grant, O Gracious Grantor of gifts none can match,

إذا ما كساك الله سربال صحة

If God has clothed you in a robe of health

إذا بركت في صوم لقوم

If you bless a fast for a people

تظلم عمرو من هجائي وقد علت

Amr complained of my satire though it enhanced

اكتهلت همتي فأصبحت لا

My aspiration is now complete, so I

ليس عن شركم ولا عن أذاكم

Not due to your evil nor to your harm

وغزال ترى على وجنتيه

With a gazelle I see upon his cheeks

أنى هجوت بني ثوابه

How could you insult the people of Thawaba

سلوت شبابي والرضاع كليهما

I have lost my youth and all of its suckling,

هي سوداء غير أن عليها

She is dark-skinned, yet upon her is

إذا خاب داع أو تناهى دعاؤه

If one who prays is disappointed, or his prayers fade,

إذ لم يكن درهمي درهمي

Though my coins were no coins with you

شاب رأسي ولات حين مشيب

My head grew white but the times are still strange

رب عرض منزه عن قبيح

Many a pure reputation is besmirched

قل لهاجيك مطنبا في الهجاء

Tell the one excessively given to satire

وحية في رأسها درة

A snake with a pearl in its head

ألا رب أشياء مذكورة

Alas, how many things that are mentioned

قولا لسمانة كهف الزنا

Say to the cave of fornication, Summana:

يا أبا الفضل لم تكن عوجة منك

O Abu Al-Fadl, no crookedness has come

عذرنا النخل في إبداء شوك

We excused the palm tree for showing thorns

أبو الحسين معجب برائه

Abu Al-Hussein is impressed by his own purity

طويت بسيط آمالي برفد

You folded my simple hopes in abandonment,

لا تحسب المعروف لا معنى له

Do not think kindness is without meaning,

لو تلففت في كساء الكسائي

If you would wrap yourself in Kasa'i's cloak

ما لقينا من ظرف ضرطة وهب

I do not ask God in distress any request

قد بلينا في دهرنا بملوك

We have suffered in our time from kings,

أحب المهرجان لأن فيه

I love the festival, for in it

المال يكسب ربه ما لم يفض

Money earns blessings for its owner unless

لولا فواكه أيلول إذا اجتمعت

If not for September’s fruits, when gathered

متنطق من جلده

Speaking from his skin,

رددت علي مدحي بعد مطل

You echoed back my praise after a long absence,

راع المها شيبي وفيه أمانها

The shepherd of love has grown old, yet faithfulness still dwells in him

فطر توسط يومه الأسبوعا

A Wednesday split its week day

كأن خبوء الشمس ثم غروبها

As if the sun's seclusion then its sunset

له مال يجم على العطايا

He has wealth to bestow gifts galore

ألم تسأل اليوم الظباء الكوانس

Have you not asked the graceful gazelles when their companions became does?

عيدان مجموعان في عيد

Two festival staffs united in a feast

قال يوما لأسود

One day he said to his black servant

تربصت بي ريب المنون تجرني

You spied on me with death's suspicion, dragging me

أهنأ العرف ما أتى من خليل

I praise the custom which came from a friend,

ماذا يريد الناس من خالد

What do people want from Khaled

كل شيء أهديه غير بديع

Everything I offer you is less than perfect,

وذاك الذي ألقاك من خطراته

The one who cast you into his dangers

إذا خلة خانتك بالغيب عهدها

If a friend betrays you in your absence

أحمد الله مبدئا ومعيدا

I begin and end with praising God

الموت دون تفرق الأحباب

Death is better than parting with loved ones

عذيري من بدر السماء لحظته

My excuse is that I glimpsed his full moon face

مديحك من تعفوه تحسب رفده

Your praise of one you pardon makes you think

أسل الغنى عنك الذي

I ask for richness without you, who

رأيت الأخلاء في دهرنا

وشاعر أوقد الطبع الذكاء به

A poet whose innate gifts were fanned to flame,

وظلماء ما في سدها من خصاصة

The darkness in its obstruction has no property,

رب ليل كأنه الدهر طولا

The night is so long my Lord, as if an epoch

قلبي من الضيق مما ضم قرقرها

My heart is suffocated by the clinking of her anklet

أين من يشتري حمارا ضليعا

Where is one who buys an experienced donkey

أتيتك شاعرا فهجوت شعري

I came to you a poet, yet you mocked my verse

خانك الصبر يوم قيل الرحيل

Patience failed you on the day of farewell

إني سألت ابن أبي طاهر

I asked the son of Abu Tahir,

يقول ابن عمار مقالة مخلص

Ibn 'Ammar recites with sincere words

دهر يشيع سبته أحده

Time passes its weeks, one after another

ومختضبات من نجيع دمائها

يا طيب الثغر والمجاجه

هل بالديار سوى صداك مجيب

أسأت فأحسن بي جهده

إن هتك الثياب في دهرنا

The rending of garments in our time

أسألت رسم الدارِ أم لم تسأل

لغيرك لا لك التفسير أنى

يا ليت شعري عنك يا حرماني

Oh how I wish my poetry could reach you, my deprivation

لما رأى أمه نهبى مقسمة

When he saw his mother insulted

يا ذائق الموتى لتعلم هل بقوا

O you who tests the dead to learn if their essence remained

تقول المعالي حين سميت بسالم

When they called me "Peace," unwilling we were

ولقد سئمت مآربي فكأن طيبها خبيث

I have wearied of my desires

حلفت برمان الثدي النواهد

I swore by the swaying breasts of the maidens

الله يعلم أنني يا سيدي أحيا بقربك

God knows that I,

أحب الطهارة من داخل

I love purity from within

لا ترى نرجسا يشبه بالورد

You will not see a narcissus that resembles a rose

مراد عينك منه بين شمس ضحى

The intent of your eyes toward it between the radiant sun of morning,

أصف الحبيب ولا أقول كأنه

I describe my beloved, but do not say he is like others,

رأيت خضاب المرء عند مشيبه

I saw a man dye his hair when it turned gray

أموركم بني خاقان عندي

O sons of Khagan, your affairs with me

بكت شجوها الدنيا فلما تبينت

The world wept for her sorrows, but when

ناك أبو العباس نيك الغت

There lived Abu al-Abbas, a relentless copulator

يا طاهريين لا طهور لكم

O hypocrites, you have no purity

يا أيها المرء الكريم والدا ذو المحتد

O noble man of virtue, O father,

وهب خادما لم يوف نعماك شكرها

You gave a servant who did not thank your blessings

قل للأمير وما بالحق من باسدع

Say to the prince, for right has no power -

من عذيري من الخلائف حلوا

From my excuse of the caliphs who settled

إلى الزهاد في الدنيا

To the ascetics of this world

عقيد الندى أطلق مدائح جمة حبائس

O dew commander, unleash abundant praises,

ألا ليس شيبك بالمتزع

Alas! Your gray hair is not disheveled,

يا ابن التي لم تزل تجاري

O son of her who has not ceased

ازجر القلب إذا القلب جمح

Rebuke the heart when the heart is reckless,

الدين والعلم والنعماء والشرف

Religion, knowledge, blessings and honor

تيس تنفق بالدلال ليشتهى

A stubborn goat who refused to obey

وماء جلت عن حر صفحته القذى

Water whose surface the wind has swept clear of motes

يا واحد الناس في الآلاء

O source of bounty for all of humankind

إذا ما رأيت الدهر بستان مشمش

When you see life as a garden of apricots

أيها الآمل البعيد من الغنم

O distant hope of wealth unearned

أعزز علي أبا إسحاق أن ذهبت

Reassure me, O Abu Ishaq, though the nights without you

أبا علي طلبت عيبك ما اسطعت

O Abu Ali, I sought your faults but could not find,

ثلاثة أشياء بها الهم يكشف

Three things dispel worries when I incline towards them,

وزعفرانية في اللون تحسبها

Saffron in color you'd think it

يا مجير الورى من الحدثان

O reviver of the land from ruin

هل أنت من مرتجيك مستمع

Are you listening to the one imploring you,

بغضب عض يدي

With rage I bit my hand

أحمد الله حمد شاكر نعمى

I praise Allah with thanks of a grateful one

رقدت وما ليل الغريب براقد

I slept, but the night of the stranger did not slumber,

ادلل على الخير تلحق شأو فاعله

Guide others to virtue, and you will share the merit of their good deeds.

أيها الواعد الذي برقه الدهر خلب

O promising one whose

وصافية ما بها من قذى

Pure, without any impurity

أبا بكر لك المثل المعلى

Abu Bakr, you are the highest ideal,

عدوك من صديقك مستفاد

Your enemy can be beneficial,

لا تخش من لا يقتنيك الأسى

Do not fear those who sorrow does not possess

دابر أوطاره إلى الذكر

His thoughts wandered to the past,

زارت على غفلة من الحرس

She visited me unexpectedly when the guards were unwatchful,

تفاءلت والفأل لي معجب

I was optimistic, and optimism pleases me,

مخففة مثقلة تراها

Delicate, yet heavy-laden, you see her,

إني رأيتك حالما أنشدتني

When I saw you dreaming, you recited

طربت إلى ريحانة الأنف والقلب

I yearned for the basil of the soul and heart,

مزجت خمرة عينيها بريقتها

رخصت معاملتي على رجل

I tolerated a man's ill treatment,

بررتك بالهجران لما رأيتني

I justified parting from you when I saw

خالد أمها وأنت أبوها

Khalid, though you are her mother, and you her father,

بان شبابي فعز مطلبه وانبت بيني وبينه نسبه

My youth has passed, though once it was desired,

قل للأمير أدام الله دولته

Say to the prince - may God make his rule everlasting

يا هل من الحادثات من وزر

O you with burdens from events, is there any relief

فتى يقطع الآمال غر مخيب

A youth who severs hopes without failure,

يا رب بصري رصاصي الشمط

O Lord, my eyesight is leaden

أقبل الفطر وهو يحكيك جودا

The dawn has come bearing good tidings for you

ألا قل لنحويك الأخفش

رب ليل تراه كالدهر طولا

أنا شبه لخدكا

لحظات أجفان الحبيب

إذا ما مدحت المرء تطلب رفده

If you praise a man seeking his favor

شهدت بعض المخانيث

I witnessed some taverns,

لأمورك التكميل والتتميم

For your affairs, completion and perfection,

كأنه في الكف من خفة

As if in the palm from such lightness

جردت عزما لماء النيل تصرفه

You have stripped resolve to direct the water of the Nile

عجبا لمن يلقى الحروب

How strange is he who meets wars, yet does not fight or resist,

صبراً أبا الصقر فكم طائر

Have patience, father of hawk, for how many a bird

أضحى ابن شاهين للورى عجبا

Ibn Shahin has become a wonder to the people,

إذا شئت حيتني رياحين جنة

If you wish, the winds of Paradise greet me

رأيتك بينا أنت خل وصاحب

I saw you among us, alone and companionless,

تكايدنا شنطف

Her dress slides down

أين حظي من العدات المواضي

Where is my share of the gentle breezes

تسدي الفتى الأقدار من حيث لا يرى

Fate strikes down the young man from where he cannot see,

وليس نسيم المسك ريح حنوطه

It is not the fragrance of musk that is the wind of his balsam,

أبا الصقر لا تدعني للبراز

O Abu al-Saqr do not leave me to travel

ما للجآذر تتقيك عيونها

Why do the roots fear you, their eyes

قد قلت إذ مدحوا الحياة فأكثروا

When they praised life and spoke of it often,

أدركت آخر ما أدركت أوله

You attained the last of what you attained the first of

روح النفوس تنفس الصهباء

The soul's spirit breathes the prairie wind

كلانا واجد في الناس

Both of us find in people

نحن ميامين على أننا

We are doves over that we are

ما علمنا من لؤلؤ ما ذكرتا

We knew not of any pearl you mentioned

نبل الردى يقصدن قصدك

The arrows of fate are aimed at you

لا تكثرن ملامة العشاق

Do not blame lovers much,

لا تبعدن قصائد ذهبت سدى

Do not let poems that have gone astray prevent you

هنيئا مريئا غير داء مخامر

A bright welcome, free from the wine's affliction

أبا حسن صل حاجتي بوصالها

O Abu Hassan, fulfill my need through her company

أبا الصقر من يشفع إليك بشافع

O Abu Al-Saqr, who can intercede with you as an intercessor

أنا صب مستهام

I am an ardent lover

وشمأل باردة النسيم

A breeze of coolness

كأنها والخزر من أحداقها

As if her eyes were the azure lakes,

قل يا أبا حسن لا زلت في منن

Say, O Abu Hassan, you are still bestowing favors

ولي طيلسان ناحل غير أنه

I have a willow tree, slender yet

إذا كنت لو دام السواد وأخلقت

If your beauty remains as the days pass

عاد عودي إلى ثراه القديم

My lute has returned to its ancient throne

أبلغ أباك إذا هلكت وقل له

Tell your father when you perish, and say to him

ما على الأحرار من رق إذا

The freeman knows no bond if he

أبيتم أن تفيدوا شكر مثلي

I refused to thank the likes of you

قل للإمام المهتدي كاسمه

Tell the rightly-guided Imam, whose name denotes it,

يا رجلا أوفى على كل رجل

O most loyal of men!

رأيت الأخلاء في دهرنا

O you who falsely praises malice, making it seem good

لست أبكي على نوال صديق

I do not weep for the loss of a friend

تحمون في الروع من أعدائكم سلبا

I saw you preparing your weapons, yet

لا ينكر الناس هزلا

People do not deny some jest

لا تهولنك شمس كسفت

Do not let a sun eclipse unsettle you

حبستنا السماء حبسا كريما

The sky has imprisoned us in a generous confinement,

رأيتك لا تلذ بطعم شيء

I saw you enjoy nothing

لا يعدم الله يديك الصولا

God does not deprive your hands of aid

نكهت شنطف ففاح كنيف

طلعت شنطف صباحا فقلنا

كما لو أردنا أن نحيل شبابنا

I saw the one who strives to attain his fortune

لي أربعون من السنين

I have reached forty years,

أعنيك يا من سواه تلحق التهم

غابن الحمد حقه مغبونه

When praised, he who deserves it is deprived,

يا غائبا عني بعيد الإياب

O you who are absent from me, far from return

يا أبا الصقر زادك الله في المجد

أبو سليمان لا ترضى طريقته

Abu Suleiman, his way is not pleasing,

أيا فضل إنك فضل أصا

يا شاعرا أمسى يحوك مديحه

O poet who praises them in the evening

مدحت أبا المغيرة ذات يوم

يضن أبو عيسى علينا بقطنة

Abu Isa is stingy with a piece of cotton towards us

شهد الله وهو عدل رضي

God witnessed, and He is just and pleased,

وخل كخلم السوء أنكرت وده

The morning breeze greeted the repentant with flower scent

رب كعاب في حجاب لم تزل

Many a veiled gazelle in curtained howdah,

مستقبل خائفه الصفح مستقبل آمنه المنح

The future's pages are fearful

أقول وقد رأيت أبا المثنى

I say, for I have seen Abu al-Muthanna

يا رب عبد مالك سيدا

O Lord of a slave who became a master

لا زلت غوثا إذا ناداك ملهوف

You are still a savior when a desperate man calls on you

أتتني أبا العباس أخبار وقعة

News reached me, O Abu al-Abbas, of an event

ما ضر مدحا في جواد

No harm for a skilled poet

إني إذا ما الصديق أكرمني

When a friend honors me

زلقت رجل شنطف في خراها

His bandy leg slipped in the mud

قذفك بالفحشاء من لم يكن

Your slander of me, when slander

تورد خديه يذكرني الوردا

Roses remind me of his cheeks

نوك وغي وعي

Dreaminess, flowery speech, and languor,

طلع الرقي في شاشية

The warrior rode out in his shirt

عيبك الصلع ليس مما يغبي

Your baldness is no cause for gloom

رأيت أذاكم وإن اعتزلتم

I saw you all, though you turned away

لا يبعدن شبابك الغرنيق

Do not let your youthful vigor depart,

شجا أن أروم الصبر عنك فيلتوي

My heart twists in agony when I try patience without you

عد عنك المنازلا

Turn away from the abodes,

أرى الصبر محمودا وعنه مذاهب

I see patience as praised, though there are dissenting views

يا من يتيه بموعد لم يقضه

O you who wanders lost without fulfilling your tryst

ولا حلي للأرض من نورها

The earth has no adornment but its radiance

لا أسرق الشعر وغيري قاله

I do not steal poetry when others wrote it

أيا من ليس يرضيه مديح

O you who is not satisfied with praise

يا خلاص الأسير يا صحة المدنف

O savior of the captive, o health of the sick

لي طيلسان ليس يترك لي

I have a cloak that leaves me not

إلهي أجرني من شنيف وزيرك

My God, save me from your wicked minister

دحداحة محراكها مسواكها

Her gums decayed, her toothbrush worn

أيادي بني الجراح عندي كثيرة

I have many benefactors, more numerous

ما لحيتاننا جفتنا وأنى

Our whales have left us, when will

أيا فضلا غدا فضلا

O one whose merit tomorrow becomes greater

غدونا إلى ميمون نطلب حاجة

We came to Mimoon seeking a favor

قالوا هجاك أبو المزاق قلت لهم

They said Abu al-Muzzaq has satirized you, I said to them

لم يله في المهرجان أولى

None was more inclined to revelry

فظلت تلقى طل مرفض دمعها

So it continued to receive the flow of her rejected tears

أضحى أبو الصقر وأفعاله

Abu Al-Saqr's deeds and acts

متى استحسنت مطلك يا ابن يحيى

When I approved your gaze, O son of Yahya

لعمركما لو أطلقت السلوك

By your lives! Had I let my tears flow

لا يبعد الله أسلافا لنا سبقوا

God does not take away ancestors who preceded us

اشرب على ذكر الأحبة إنهم

Drink to the memory of your loved ones - for

بلغ البغاة علي حيث أرادوا

The slanderers have achieved their aim against me as they desired

وسيد قد عمرتني أنعمه

A lord whose kindness aged me prosperous

وما في الناس أجود من شجاع

None are more generous than the valiant,

يا نبي الله في الشعر

O Prophet of God in poetry, and O Jesus son of Mary

ومجرد كالسيف جرد نفسه

He stripped himself bare like a sword,

أسدى إلي أبو الحسين يدا

Abu al-Husain extended to me a hand,

منظر فاتن وتحجب عنا

A charming sight hidden from us

حزني منك يا ابنة الأملاك

My sadness for you, O daughter of angels

أيحجبني عمرو وقد عاش حقبة

Does Amr hide me, after having lived an era,

اردد علي قراطيسي ممزقة

Return to me my torn papers

رمدت مقلتي اشتياقا إليكا

My eyes yearned for you

قد قرن المشتري إلى البدر

The buyer was likened to the full moon

هبا خليلي قد قضيتما وطرا

My friends, we have finished a part of life's journey

أيا حسرتا إن أفسد الصيف صحتي

Alas, how anguish overtakes me should summer ruin my health

يا أيها الجائر في سيره

O you who are unjust in your conduct

أبكيتني فبكيت من غير ذنب جنيت

You made me weep, so I wept

ما رأى الناس كابن هرثمة العاجز

None have seen a coward like Ibn Harthama

كسته القنا حلة من دم

The canal was clothed in a garment of blood

أول الشهر أول الأسبوع

The first of the month, the first of the week

لم تكن مثل نعمة الله في العب

The grace of God was never like the comfort

وللشباب حبالات يصيد بها

The youth has ropes with which he fishes

قولا لقرة عيني

Tell the delight of my eye,

إذا ما الدهر أمضى من مداه

When life has passed the extent of its limit,

إذا أنت نفست للباسليق

If you shed for the hero

نبكي الشباب لحاجات النساء ولي

I lament youth for women’s needs, though I

طير النوم عن جفوني خيال

Sleep was chased from my eyes by a vision

قلت إذ قيل جوهري طريف

When they said that Jayhurī was refined

سألتك إغنائي عن الناس كلهم

I asked you to enrich me about all people

يا أخي من أبي وما كان يزني

O my brother, my father was never unchaste

ليس يستيقن العناية مشفوع

The care is not known with certainty

أبا حسن لم أمس من حال بالكم

Abu Hasan, I have not changed in my affection for you all

ولما رأيت البين قد جد جده

When I saw the parting had parted in earnest

ومنزل الوحي على نبيه

The sender of revelation to His prophet

إن عبد القوي عبد قوي

Indeed Abdul Qawi is a strong servant

إذا ما شئت أن تعرف

If you wish to know one day

مدحتك أكلأ النسرين ليلي

I praised you though night ravens croaked their dirge,

أيلتمس الناس الغنى فيصيبهم

People seek riches, and riches find them

قل لمن عنك أخرتها المنون

Tell the one for whom you have postponed death

أحق برِفدك من آمليه

More deserving of your generosity am I

تعرض لي دونه معشر

A company attacked me, though they were generous

وضرطة وهب من الحادثات

And a blast of incidents

أيها السيد الذي جل عن شكري

O Lord, whose bounty exceeds all doubts,

وثقيل كأنه ثقل دينِ

Heavy as though it were the weight of debt

إذا ابن خيار بدا

When the son of a good man appears

عجب الناس من أبي الصقر إذ وللي

The people were amazed at Abu Al-Saqr when

قد كنت أبكي لأصحاب الهوى زمنا

I used to cry for the lovers, once upon a time

ما إن يزال لهن ردف شائل

Their buttocks still sway seductively

خساسة البيهقي والبينِ

The wretched one, al-Bayhaqi, and the clear

لا زلت يخطئك الثناء لصاحب

You still miss praising the right one

فضل الراح أنها لذة المشرب

The breeze is preferred for it is the pleasure of walking,

جربت شعري أبلو كيف طاعته

I tested my poetry with Abilu, how obedient it was to me,

أقول لراجي خالدٍ إذ رأيته

I say to the hopeful Khaled when I saw him

يا ليت أهل العقل إذ حرموا

طل دمع هريق في الأطلال

Sleep fought his eyelids, so he found

أيا ابن رجاء وابنه الخير لا يزل

O son of hope, and his virtuous son, may hope

إني لأغضي عن الزلات أثبتها

Though faults I overlook, correcting them,

سلني قد مللت طول الغرام

Ask me, for I have wearied of endless love

أقام مشيبي علي القيامه

My gray hair brought about doom for me

لا تحسب النبط الأوغاد أنهم

The ignoble Nabataeans must not think

غدوت إليك ولي واعدان

I came to you, keeping my promise

كسل الأير أو ينشطه أير

The fate is made lazy or energized by fate

شكوت الزمان فقال الزمان

I complained of time, and time replied:

سفهت على عمرو سفاهة جاهل

I acted foolishly towards Amr with the folly of an ignorant man

قدمت قدوم البرء بعد سقام

You came to bring relief after illness

اسعد بعيد أخي نسك وإسلام

Rejoice, O my dear brother of chastity and Islam

يعقوب ويل أبيك أية هوة

Jacob, woe to your father! What abyss

نذيري من عسى ولعل نفسي

My warnings, from whom may live or perhaps my soul,

شهر الصيام مبارك لكنما

The month of fasting is blessed, but

خلافتنا حرب ولقياننا سلم

Our rule is war, and our coming together is peace

أحب كل غادة

I love every maiden,

ركبتك الخير التي لم يزل

Your generosity, which has always had

عرفت مقادير الرجال بنكبة

I have known the worth of men through adversity,

يا من سكون النفس في تأميله

O you in whose contemplation the soul finds peace

فلو أني وليت الحكم يوما

If I were to rule one day,

تسعى لكي تجمع وسطيهما

You strive to bring them together

بدا الشيب إلا ما تداوي المواشط

Grey hair has crept in, and no oils can cure it,

أعقب القرب من حبيبك شحط

After intimacy with your beloved comes estrangement

إذا ما مدحت الناقصين فإنما

When you praise the inadequate, you only

قطع الله عذر من أبواه

God has cut off all excuse from him

يا حسن الوجه والشمائل

O you of beautiful face, character, morals, wisdom, deeds and actions

تذكرت ما سخى بنفسي عنكم

I recall how freely I gave myself for you

قصيدة كرها مثقفها

أرى لعبة الشطرنج إن هي حصلت

I see the game of chess, if it is mastered

وذكرك في الشعر مثل السناد

Your mention in poetry is like the toothpick, the date, and the raisin

وفارس ما شئت من فارس

A knight of your choice, victor over two ranks of spears,

قصرت شنطف وقلت وذلت

Her purse shrank, diminished, and declined,

أخالد لو ألمت مضيض شيء

If you were pained by something hurtful,

لا يحزننك من يموت

Let not the dead grieve you-

ما ضره جدري حل وجنته

My neighbor's wall did it no harm though it enclosed his garden,

يا من يعمي على حليلته

O you who deceive your beloved

هاجرت عنك إلى الرجال

I migrated from you to the Bedouins

أسل الذي عطف الأعنة

I ask the one who turned aside the stubborn

أسومك ما يسوم العبد مثلي

I serve you as a slave like me should serve,

نادمت بدر السماء في فلكه

I blamed the full moon in its orbit

أنجز الوعد إن خير مواعي

Fulfill the promise, for the best of morals

يا أبا العباس قرض

O father of Abbas, I have

ما أحسن العفو من المالك

How excellent is the pardon from the angel,

غدا كل ذي شعر يدل بشعره

Tomorrow every poet will boast of his poetry,

أستغفر الله من هجائيكا

I seek forgiveness from Allah for my insults to you

لم أفسر غريبها لك لكن

I did not explain its strangeness to you, but

وأقصر عنه الطرف خوف ملالتي

My eyes turn quickly from beholding him,

أرقني بعد أن عجبت له

You charmed me after I admired you

أشجتك داعية مع الإشراق

You roused me at dawn with your call,

يا ذا الطواحن قل لي

O owner of the mill, tell me

أشكو الفراق إلى التلاقي

I complain of parting to the tryst,

يا لهف نفسي للأحبه

Oh how my soul yearns for the beloved

قد حلفنا على الصفاء جميعا

We have all sworn to be sincere

كان أناس يرون أني في

There were people who thought I was the epitome of literature

كل الخلال التي فيكم محاسنكم

All the flaws in you are your virtues

تناسيت أمري واطرحت حقوقي

I forgot my affairs and relinquished my rights

نحمد الله حين من وأبقى

We praise Allah when He bestows and leaves

ليوقن من يعارضني بأني

Let those who oppose me know that

يا راميا غرض القطيعة

O archer of the tribe, conveying aloofness,

ادعني يا أخا العلا وادع عواسا

Call me, O brother of nobility, and call again

عاصيت كل هوى مطاع

I disobeyed every desire obeyed,

أأحمد لا والله لا ذقت فيشتي

Ahmad, no - by God - no, I've not tasted your peach

نبئت أن ابن خنساء

I was told that the son of Khansa'

طيلسان سامري

A Samaritan Kilts

لأن أصلي كصلاة الفرس

To pray as a horse prays

راع قلبي مشيب رأس خليس

My heart is ruined by an evil, grey-haired shepherd

ما في حياة عبيد الله منفعة

There is no benefit in the lives of slaves of God

رأيت أباك الخير شق من اسمه

I saw your father, goodness itself cleaved from his name

لله وراق مررنا به

Allah has a writer that we passed by

عجب الجاهلون أن أبصروه

The ignorant were amazed when they saw him

جفتني أن صددت ولي لديها

You spurned me when I sought you, though for you

ما طلت باللهو والأيام تنتجز

You have not enjoyed youth, and the days hasten their pace,

أراني وما أحدثت بعدك سيئا

I see myself, yet after you I've done no wrong

يا ابن الوزيرين لا مواربة

O son of two viziers, there is no deviation

مني الهجاء ومنك الصبر فاصطبر

From me comes reproach and from you patience, so be patient,

أتاني عن جاريك أن قد قطعته

My neighbor told me that you severed him

لو يدوم الشباب مدة عمري

If only youth would last for the span of my life

شاعت له دعوة فأتبعها

His call spread, so he followed it

كبرت وفي خمس وخمسين مكبر

I've grown old at fifty-five, no longer desirous,

يا من إذا ما رأته عين والده

O you, when your father sees you among men,

منع المخنث أحمد

Ahmad the effeminate poet is forbidden

أبا منذر بالله إلا صدقتني

Aba Mundhir, I implore you by God, be truthful with me

أأسماء أي الواعدين ترينه

Which of you two lovers' names do I see

ياابن فراس أي شيء تنتظر

O son of insight, what do you await?

أقول وقد قال العذول فأكثرا

I say as Al-Adhool said excessively

ليهنك أن قد مر من صدر دولة

It saddens me that months have passed

هل الملالة إلا منقضى وطر

Is satiety anything but a passing whim,

حريث نبيطي مسمى بحرثه

A besmirched poet, labelled with his own besmirchment

لا وألحاظ العيون الساحره

No, by the enchanting glances of eyes

قلت لقوم سادة قادة

I said to eminent leaders,

بدت لي غادة لم تبد إلا

Ghadah appeared to me, she did not appear except

كفاك من ذلتي للشيب حين أتى

Enough of my submission to old age when it came

يرتاح للنيلوفر القلب الذي

The heart that does not awaken from passion and its toil

ومن سره ألا يرى ما يسوؤه

Whoever wishes not to see what grieves him

غيره الكون والفساد

The universe and corruption changed him,

الحزن منحل ومنعقد

Grief breaks apart and congeals

أدركت بالحزم والتدبير ما عجزت

Through resolve and wisdom I attained

يا صائد الأسد إن صيدكها

O hunter of lions, your prey

إذا ما وصفت امرءا لامرىء

When you describe a man to another man,

بدا سوء رأيك في مشهدي

Your poor opinion of my scene has begun

لا تحسبن الزمان ينسئك القرض

Do not think time will forget to collect from you,

إن المنية لا تبقي على أحد

Death spares no one,

قل للأمير أدام الله غبطته

Tell the prince, may his happiness endure,

يقتر عيسى على نفسه

Jesus imposes austerity on himself

قيل لي لم ذممت كل البرايا

They said to me, why do you blame all mankind

ومدامة أغنت عن المصباح

Illuminating brighter than any lamp, a goblet of wine

لما رأيت الشعر أصبح خاملا

When I saw poetry becoming dormant

إذا تعاصت قينة مرة

If a stubborn woman gets angry one day

تتجمل الحسناء كل تجمل

The beauty adorns herself with every adornment

تفيء الأيور على أهلها

The shepherds return to their abode

يا للرجال توسموا وتبينوا

O men, beware and take heed,

ويلك يا قد البرستوجه

Woe to you, O wide-faced one

يا باني الدرج الذي

O builder of the staircase which

يا رب لا تبعث بغيث عيثا

Oh Lord, send not a vicious storm

مطايب عيش زايلته مخابثه

The pleasures of a fleeting life have departed,

رمت نداكم يا بني طاهر

I cast your alliance away, O sons of Tahir,

قد كنت أبكي على من مات من سلفي

I used to cry for those of my ancestors who died

فتى يتقي لحظ العيون ويرعوي

A young man who shields himself from the glances of eyes and grazes,

إذا أجاد الذي يشبهه

If he who makes the simile is skillful

يا حامد الله إذ لم يكسه نعما

O Hameed, though fate did not bestow on you riches

ومستقر على كرسيه تعب

And seated firmly on his chair, exhausted,

قل لأبي القاسم المرجى قابلك الدهر بالعجائب

Tell Abu al-Qasim al-Murajja

دعوا الأسد تربض في غابها

Let the lion crouch in his forest

إذا جئت أشكو ما بقلبي من الأسى

When I come to complain of the sorrow in my heart

وصحابة ناكوا القيان تظرفا

And friends who wielded lances graciously

وقصير تراه فوق يفاع

And short you see it above the mound

جعل الله مهربا وامتطى الليل مركبا

He made the night a refuge

نصبت حبائل حسنها فاصطدنني

She set up the snares of her beauty and so ensnared me,

على الطائر الميمون والسعد فاركب

Ride the auspicious bird of good fortune,

أيا شجرا بين الرسيس فعاقل

O tree among the shrubs, though wise,

للحريثي أبي بكر غبب

Abu Bakr al-Huraithi has a protruding forehead

قدم الأمير أخو الأمير

The prince, brother of the prince

أشارت بالخضاب إلى الخضاب

With henna she gestured towards henna

النخل يشرع شوكا شائكا أشبا

The palm tree raises sharp, thorny branches

يا غصنا من لؤلؤ رطب

O branch of fresh, glistening pearl

طربت ولم تطرب على حين مطرب

I was thrilled, yet you weren't thrilled in that thrilled moment

لا أقذع السلطان في أيامه

I do not insult the sultan during his days

وله المحب إلى الحبيب

The lover has the right to love his beloved,

ما أنس لا أنس هندا آخر الحقب

I do not forget another India at the end of time

رأيتك شبهت الضمير وحفظه

I saw you resembling conscience and its preservation

يا ابن المسيب عشت في نعم

O son of al-Musayyab, you lived in luxury

أعلم الناس بالنجوم بنو نوبخت

The people most knowledgeable of the stars are the tribe of Banu Naw

دعتني إلى فضل معروفكم

Your radiant faces invited me to your kindness

به تنطوي الآمال عند انبساطها

Hopes fold when they expand

ومغن ببرده ونداه

A singer with his chill and call

وذي ود تغيظ إذ جفاني

A friend was angered when I turned from him,

قالوا سقى الماء بطن وهب

They said that the water quenched the belly of Wahb

سقيتن يا منزلات الهوى

O dwellings of passion, I was quenched

رأيتك لا تلذ لطعم شيء

I saw you find no sweetness in the taste of a thing

فقدتك يا ابن أبي طاهر

I lost you, O son of Abi Tahir

ليت شعري عن خالد كيف أمسى

I wish I knew of Khaled, how was his evening

ألا ليت شعري هل تؤخر حاجتي

Alas! I wonder if my need will be delayed,

إذا أنت لم تحفل بمدح من امرئ

If you pay no heed to the praise of a man

فتى لا يرى تأخير غوث وليه

A youth who does not delay in aiding his ally,

أيسير مدحي في الأمير وكله

My praise of the prince goes on, while he

وعاتقة زفت لنا من قرى كوثى

A woman of noble descent was brought to us from Kutha's villages

كم ظهر ميت مقفر جاوزته

How many barren deserts have I crossed,

ألا يا أيها الشاكـر والمطنب في المدح

Lo! O doubter given to praise,

كريم أتاه أنني قلت منكرا

A generous man was told that I spoke ill of him,

بلاغة ابن فراس

The eloquence of Ibn Faras

خذ نصيبا من عيشك المستعار

Take your share of borrowed life

لولا عبيد الله قلت ولم أخف رهق الجناح

Had it not been for Obaydullah's slaves

أيا تارك الصهباء لا زلت تاركا

O you who left the bright land though you left

ألف بين الفؤاد والكمد

He brought joy to my heart and spirit

إذا ما مدحت المرء يوما ولم يثب

If I praised a man one day, and he did not repay

يا أيها المبدي شماتته انتظر

O you who gloat at my misfortune, wait,

سيشكر رب الناس ما قد فعلته

The Lord of mankind will thank what you have done

إلف لنا بارع الصفات غراب بين المغنيات

A master of qualities charms us

أحب أن تشتمني

I love when you insult me

ترى الرعية إما راغيا وسطا

The people are seen either wandering around

بأبي وأمي أنتم

By my father and mother, you are

مهما يكن للقيان زينا

No matter how beautiful the bow-maker's bow is,

سلوت الرضاع والشباب كليهما

I bid farewell to nursing and youth altogether,

أسوغ لخلاني مساغ شرابهم

I make excuses for my boon companions and accept their drink

إذا كنت مضطري إلى القول بالذي

When you are compelled to speak of him

ذكر الأخفش القديم فقلنا

The ancient grammarian was mentioned, so we said

لي خادم لا أزال أحتسبه

I have a servant I still hold accountable

اقضِ لي حاجتي ولا تمطلني

Grant me my wish, do not keep me waiting,

فتى يبسط الآمال حسن لقائه

A youth who extends hopes, beautiful is meeting him

للناس فيما يكلفون مغارم

People bear burdens in what they are tasked,

لو كنت أنت حنينا في حذاقته

If you were yearning in its peak

يا ابن حسان لا تشكن في دينى

O son of Hassaan, do not doubt my religion,

الزب رب للنساء

إن كنت صفعانا ولي ضيعة

عزمت على تطليق عرسي لعسرتي

تلق نصيحتي يا ابن الوزير

Heed my advice, O son of the minister

بادر غروس يديك بالسقيا

Hasten the palms of your hands to watering

يا علي العلا ابن قاسم القاسم

O Ali, the sublime, son of Qassim the divider

بكعبة الله بل بخالقها

I swear by Allah's Ka'bah, nay, by its Creator

قلت لخود ضفتها مرة

I said to her soft cheek once

أبا الحسين وأنت المليك

O Abul Hussein, you are not

يا أبا الصقر إن شكري لمعروفك

O Abu Al-Saqr, my gratitude to Ma'ruf

هذا مقام يا بني وائل

This is a refuge, O sons of Wail,

سؤلي أن توقن أني امرؤ

I was asked to make sure that you know

يا سيدا لم يلتبس عرضه

O master whose honor was never stained

غضبت لي السماء والأرض والناس

The sky, earth, and people were angry with

ضرطة إبراهيم في البربخ

The fart of Ibrahim in the privy

أَحاط بحرمتي ما كان مني

My sins have surrounded my sanctity

يا سيد العرب الذي قدرت له

O master of the Arabs, for whom

تعللت ريقا يطرد النوم برده

I excused a saliva that its coldness dispels sleep

ما كرم اللّه بني آدم

God did not honor the children of Adam

سليم الزمان كمنكوبه

The peace of time is like its afflicted one

يا قاصدا ليد جلت أياديها

O you who extend a hand to one whose hands are paralyzed

قالوا هجاك أبو حفصٍ فقلت لهم

They said Abu Hafs has satirized you, so I said to them,

سأقسم دمعي إذ غدرت فدمعة

I will split my tears when you betray me, one tear

خليل من الخلان أصفيه خلتي

A trusted friend of mine I chose to confide in

بين أجفانه عقار تدور

In his eyelids a potent draught revolves

Forget standing at the ruins and blaming

أيا من له الشرف المستقل

O you who has an independent honor

فيم التنازع والشقاق

Why all this conflict and discord,

أغضبني بالأمس ما سمتني

You angered me yesterday by what you called me

لهان على سليمى كم قتيل

How many slain Suwaylim has,

قل للمسود حين شيب هكذا

Tell the one with the graying hair this:

يا وهب يا صاحب البريد ألا تكتب

O messenger, O friend of correspondence, do not

جمعت آيتين محييه طورا

I gathered two verses reviving,

وصفعان يجود بمصفعيه

With his palms he strikes generously

بني طاهر إما منعتم نوالكم

O sons of Tahir, if you have denied me your generosity,

أقول لسائلي بك يا ابن يحيى

I say to those who ask of you, O son of Yahya

ما بالها قد حسنت ورقيبها

Why has she beautified herself when her chaperone

إذا شاخ قوم شيبوا وابن بلبل

When people grow old their hair turns grey

ياصاحبا أعضل في كيده لست خبيرا أيها الصاحب

O friend, skilled in treachery

أبا العباس قد ذكت الجمار

Abu al-Abbas, the pots have simmered,

قد كان من رأب الصدوع التي

The cracks of discord that

ألذ من معتق الرساطون

More delightful than exquisite cocktails

يا أيها المعتضد المعضود

O you who is supported by his Lord, and praised King,

إذا وصفت ما فوق مجرى وشاحها

If you describe what's above the flow of her shawl,

كأن أباه حين واقع أمه

As if when his father came upon his mother,

تالله يا ابن أبي أمية قل لنا

By Allah, O son of Abu Umayya, tell us

أحمد الله نية وثناء

I praise God morning, evening, and night

يا رب جري شواء مررت به

O Lord, a roasted lamb passed me by

وكم معان وألفاظ مهذبة

And how much meaning and refined words

يعطي الرغائب جودا من طبيعته

He gives desires generously by his nature

أنفس قد ظمئن ليس إلى الماء

Souls thirsting not for water but for the tumult of frontiers,

أيها السيد الذي ورث السؤدد

O master who inherited glory

ما ساءني إعراضه

His indifference did not pain me,

رأت عيني لمنكرة قواما

My eyes saw a graceful figure

لم أر شيئا صادقا نفعه

I have not seen anything as beneficial

تفرست في الشطرنج حتى عرفتها

I pondered chess until I understood it

لأبو الجهم ملصق

Abu al-Jahm has a clinging self

يا ابن حرب كسوتني طيلسانا

O son of war, you clothed me in a garment

قالوا هجاك أبو حفص فقلت

They said Abu Hafs has satirized you, so I said to them:

أصبحت أعين الغواني عدتني

The eyes of the beauties have counted me old,

أخالد قد عاديت في كراكا

Akhallad, you have wronged me with enmity,

لا تقصدن لحاجة

Do not seek out someone in need,

كأن الكأس في يدها وفيها

As if the cup were in her hand, containing

عيني لا تتهلل منكما الدرر

My eyes do not gleam with tears,

يا من يسائل عن عشيرة خالد

O you who ask about the tribe of Khalid

وكم من بخيل قد تأدب حيلة

How many a miser has resorted to cunning

يا أبا نصر وما للمرء في

O Abu Nasr, why should one boast

لا تحسب الشيخ أبا حفصل

Do not think Sheikh Abu Hafs

يا بني طود المعالي طاهر

O sons of lofty virtues pure,

أقول وقد قالت لطالب رفدها

I say, though she who craves my aid has said:

خيري ورد أتاك في طبق

The best of roses came to you on a plate

ولاح في القيان فقلت مهلا

A twinkle in the lutes so I said halt!

أشجتك أطلال لخوله

Your ruins have saddened me, O Lakhaw

إن يخدم القلم السيف الذي خضعت

If the pen serves the sword that made

دنيا علا شأن الوضيع بها

The lowly find honor in this world

يا ابن الوزير الذي تمت وزارته

O son of the minister whose ministry is complete

ألم تر أن المال يهلك أهله

Do you not see that wealth destroys its owner

إذا حسنت أخلاف قوم فبئسما

If the successors of a people are good, how wretched

وإني لذو حلف حاضر

I swear a ready oath,

يا شريفا لقرنه إشراف

O noble one with the lofty horn

له قلم يستتبع السيف طائعا

His pen commands the sword, obediently it follows

ما بال ديناريك عني أعرضا

Why do you turn away from me, denying

قالوا هجاك أبو حفص فقلت

They said Abu Hafs reviled you, so I said to them,

أحدث الصفع في دماغ أبي أحمق

Abu Ahmak's mind was struck with a slap

لما رأى أمه نهبى

When he saw his mother being plundered

جعلت فداك لم أسأل

I offer myself for your sake, I did not ask

يا من غدا بين تأميل وإشفاق

O you who became, between hope and compassion

ما لي يزاحمني الخلصان في طرقي

Why do they bother me on my path

كأن صوت الأعجرِ المتين

O people of Nubukht, stop your gazelles from me,

رأيتك تعطي المال إعطاء واهب

يا واحد الناس في الآلاء والمننِ

O you who are unmatched in kindness and favors,

قد قلت بيتا لك تلقاءه

I have recited a verse to you, facing you,

لمت يا وهب أهل دهرك فيما

You blamed, O Wahb, the people of your time for what

قل للمسمى بما تكنى الكلاب به

Say to the one called what dogs are nicknamed with

ساءلت يوما خالدا

One day I asked Khaled

يا قحطبي كما يقال وربما

O wood-gatherer, as it is said, and perhaps

لامرئ يجهل الغريب سواكا

I did not explain its strangeness to you, but

يا رب لهفان على صنيعه

O Lord, yearning for His creation

وباذنجان محسي تراه

With an eggplant so delicate it appears

يا من بغرته الهلال أما ترى

O you whose smile is like the crescent moon

أصبت مصائب كنت الشري

You were struck with calamities in which I was extremely cruel

شكري عتيد وكذاك حقدي

My gratitude and hatred alike endure,

أقول مرت ظبيتان فصدتا

I say, two does crossed my path,

يا آل وهب شهدت ضرطة

O family of Wahb, a fart has testified

أحسن ما كان الدقيق موقعا

The finest thing was when the flour was placed

نعال كنباية والعنبر

Kanbayan sandals and ambergris,

يقول القائلون ضويت جدا

They say you strayed far away

لو يعلم الأعداء أين تحلني

If my enemies knew where you dwell,

وفقحة كالحوت في ابتلاعها

Like a whale in its devouring,

يا ابن حرب كسوتني طيلسانا

O son of war, you clothed me in a worn out garment

أتيت ابن عمرو فصادفته

I came to Ibn ‘Amr and found him

الحمد لله حتى ينفد العدد

Praise be to Allah until the numbers run out

بؤسا لقوم تحدوني بجهلهم

Woe to a people who challenged me in their ignorance,

سليمان مفسدة المملكه

Solomon corrupted the kingdom,

وحديثها السحر الحلال لو انها

Her speech is lawful magic, if only

لو أن رجلي عرسه يداها

If only her ankles were his wrist

مسقم عن سقم جفن

Sick with love-sick eyes,

ألبس حلمي عند لبسي له

I wear my dream when I dress in it

عجبت لقوم يقبلون مدائحي

I'm amazed by people who accept my praises

ليكفك حاسدا حسده

To stop an envier envying,

أيا ابن المعلى كن معلى ولا تكن

O son of the exalted one, be exalted and do not

طلب البيهقي قرنا فلم يحرمه

Al-Bayhaqi sought a horn but was not granted it

أقرضته أيرا فرد لسانا

I lent him an air, so he returned a tongue,

كفي ملامك قد ملكت عناني

Silence your blame, for I have tamed my soul,

قالوا هجاك أبو حفص فقلت لهم

They said Abu Hafs disparaged you, so I told them:

رب فتاة حرة المقلد

Many a free girl walks with the gait of a sturdy lad,

قد كنت تبذل لي كتابك مرة

You used to offer me your book once,

راجعت بعد الجهل حجرا

I returned after ignorance a stone,

راح شيبي علي مثل الثغام

My gray hair has descended upon me like heavy rain,

مذ صرت همي في النوم واليقظه

Since you became my only concern, waking or asleep

أتاني عتاب من أخ فاغتفرته

A reproach from a brother came to me, so I forgave him,

إقامة الدقل الصيني تكلفها

The Chinese vase's standing costs it nothing,

لشنطف كعثب خلق

His bag is like a fox in creation,

هاجرني ظلما أبو حفصل

Abu Hafs exiled me unjustly

يا ابن التي كانت إذا سئلت

O son of her who, when asked

ردي التحية من وراء حجابك

Return my greeting from behind your veil

ألا أيهذا الشيب سمعا وطاعة

Oh gray hair, hear and obey

لم يكن ما كان شيئا يعتمد

What happened wasn't something to rely on

يا خالد ابن أبيه

O Khaled, son of his father

هل للقلوب من العيون خلاص

Do hearts have salvation through eyes,

أبا العباس ما هذا التواني

O Abu Al-Abbas, what is this delay?

له شمالان حاز إرثهما

He has two left hands that inherited their qualities,

وقائل إن أبا حفصل أحمق محتاج إلى ضرب

They say Abu Hafs is a fool in need of blows,

قدمت لي وعدا فأين نجاحه

You made me a promise, so where is its success?

لأنت شين القيان يا غنجه

You are the beast of beasts, O Gnangeh

في جلنار وأختها دبسية

In Jullanar and her sister Dubsiyya

كساء بني نوبخت مهلا فإنني

O mantle of the sons of Nubakht, wait, for I see you

جدك شيبان العظيم الفخر

Your ancestor, the venerable, the pride

أبا حسن إن حبل المطال

Abu Hassan, the rope of patience

لا تلحني في المنطق السخيف

Do not preach foolish logic to me

لكم حجاب ولنا أنفس

You have veils, and we have souls

يهش لذكراك العدو وإنه

The enemy softens at the mention of you, though

لا شيء إلا وفيه أحسنه

There is nothing but in it there is its finest

فتى لم يخلق الله

A youth whom Allah did not create

كل داع لعلي

Every caller for Ali

أتيتك لم أشفع إليك بشافع

I came to You without an intercessor to intercede for me,

وما سير الهاجون في الشعر خزية

The satirists have brought no shame to poetry,

تشيبن حين هم بأن يشيبا

When they decided to go gray

أنهنه غربي عن الجاهلي

I complain of my ignorance of the ignorant

خجلت خدود الورد من تفضيله

The cheeks of roses blushed with shame

عسرت علينا دعوة السمك

The invitation of fish has become difficult for us

سبيلي إليك كتابي إليكا

My path to you is my letter to you

عزت مطالب دنيا كل ذي أدب

The demands of this world are honorable to every person of dignity,

ومدامة كحشاشة النفس

With a euphoria like the flutter of the soul

هب على رأسك العنا

Bestow upon your head, O Fate!

سأثلج باصطناع العرف صدري

I will gladden my heart by practicing virtue,

قد بلى الله يونس بن بغاء

God has indeed afflicted Yunus son of Bugha

أرى بقر الإنس مني تراع

I see the cows of mankind are afraid of me,

يا باني الدرج الذي أولى به

O builder of the staircase, which, had it sense,

تأمل العيب عيب

Criticizing fault is fault itself,

أتت من بريدينا ضرطة

A fart came from our Berideen,

أتاني مقال من أخ فاغتفرته

A message came to me from a brother, so I forgave him,

ذقت الطعوم فما التذذت كراحة

I've tasted flavors, but found no pleasure

شربت وقد كان الشباب محللا

I drank when youth made drinking lawful

يا باطلا وهمتنيه مخائله

O empty one who deluded me with his chatter

لعمرك ما السيف سيف الكمي

By your life, the sword is no sword of warriors,

أحل العراقي النبيذ وشربه

The Iraqi made wine lawful and drank it

رأيت جناة الحرب غير كفاتها

I saw the spoils of war unworthy of the strife,

توددت حتى لم أجد متوددا

I yearned until I found no one to yearn for

رجل عليه لحية منها قرامل زوجته

A man with a beard

ألم تر لابن بلبل إذ حماني

Did you not see the son of the nightingale when he strangled me

لا زلت تفخم والثناء ضئيل

You still boast though praise is meager,

عيد يعود كعود عرفك دائما

A feast that recurs like your enduring nobility

تبارك الله خالق الكرم البارع

Blessed is Allah, Creator of the generous vine

إن تصطنعني تصطنعني شاكرا

If you befriend me, you will find me grateful

يمن الله طلعة المولود

God blessed the birth of the newborn

إذا مطلت امرأ بحاجته

If you strain a man with your demands

ما مدمعي حذر النوى بقريح

My tears did not deter fate's determination,

أرى المفند ينهاني ويأمرني

The censurer warns and orders me

لاح شيب فنهنه الحلم جهلا

The dream of youth has faded into gray,

أي شيء يكابد الطفل في الدن

What does the child endure in this lowly world

مديحك من تبتغي رفده

Your praise, you seek to feed it,

إذا ما جلته الحرب أعرض رمحه

When war strikes him, he turns his spear

الشيب أحلم والشبيبة أظرف

The gray hair is wise while youth is rash

لخالد زوجة مكرعة

Khalid has a crooked-legged wife

بعثت ببرني جني كأنه

With a bright letter, sweet as honey,

أقصر وعور

Short and limping

قال الحيا دعها فخالفه الهوى

Reason said "leave it", but desire opposed

طرفت عيون الغانيات وربما

I delighted the eyes of the singers, and perhaps

أنتما عندي يا ابني رمضان

You are with me, O my two sons of Ramadan

زوج شيخ لنا عجوزا

An old hag was married to our sheikh

غضبت وظلت من سفه وطيش

You were angry and remained from foolishness and recklessness

قالوا هجاك أبو حفص فقلت لهم

They said Abu Hafs disparaged you, so I said to them,

ياسمي الخليل إياك أدعو

O beloved of the Friend, to You I pray

شعرات في الرأس بيض ودعج

Gray wisps in my head and dullness,

رأيت حمالا مبين العمى

I saw a blind porter stumbling

سوار شكرا لأيري فضل نعمته

A bracelet of thanks to Airi for the favor of his blessing

أنت فضل وفضلة الشيء لغو

You are excess and the excess of a thing is vain

لا غرني يا صاحب الدستيجه

Do not deceive me, O owner of the handkerchief,

غير الحياة إلى الشعور

Life changes rapidly to desires

أعمل فيهم ذكرا حساما

I wield among them a sharp-edged sword

يا أيها السيد الذي غمرت

O sir whose hands are immersed

يا هل يخلد منظر حسن

O beauty of the graceful sight, is it immortalized?

عاقب الله كل من قال إني مخنث

May God punish all those

إن كنت تمقت من أساء لأنه

If you hate one who did wrong because

لنا صديق مارد

We have a defiant friend

مرت ماء عيني فاستهل على النحر

My eyes shed tears, so they descended upon my throat

أحذر أهل الأرض حد ابن طالب

I warn the people of the earth, beware the son of Tálib,

وخضراء من حوك الربيع شهدتها

Green from the embroidering of spring I saw it

لعمرك ما أدري إذا ما تنفست

By your life, I know not if, when she breathes,

صرمت اليوم حبلك من لميس

Today you have cut your rope from an unworthy one,

لم يضحك الشيب في فوديه بل كلحا

The gray hairs in his beard did not make him laugh, rather his cheeks wrinkled.

ما أستزيد لقاسم من ربه غير البقاء

I ask of my Lord for Qasim naught

نحب كل غلام فيه ميعته

We love every lad endowed with rectitude,

أيها المتحفي بحول وعور

O you who is deformed with crookedness and lameness

يا فؤادي غلبتني عصيانا

O my heart, you have overcome me with disobedience

تذكر بي فترجيني

You are reminded of me, so you wish for me

لا تغش إلا ملكا في منزلِه

Do not be deceived by a king in his abode

غصن من البان في وشاح

A twig from acacia in a scarf

يا أيها النفر الذين تعجبوا

O you who are amazed

يا ابن أبي الجهم احتقب هذا اللطف

O son of Abu al-Jahm, beware of this kindness

ذق أبا جعفر مغبة جرمك

Taste, O Abu Ja'far, the bitterness of your crime,

الخير مصنوع بصانعه

Good is made by its maker

قد يفي للصديق غير أمينه

A friend may fail his faithful friend

وسميطة صفراء دينارية

A supple, saffron yellow she-camel,

أبا العباسِ عمرت

O Abul Abbas, you were blessed

وقينة أبرد من ثلجه

A beast cold as ice

لعلي أبي الحسين سميي

For Ali, my father al-Husayn I name him

يا سيدا يهب الأقدار مقتدرا

O Lord who grants destinies, All-Powerful,

إذا كنت لا تستطيع الجماع

If you cannot have intercourse

قد أخلق الناس الهدايا كلها

People have created all gifts,

إن فطرا حيا الخليفة بالنرجس

The Commander of the Faithful was exhilarated by a lively spring,

ألذ من فائقة الإبهط

Sweeter than the excess of stupidity

إذا أحدقوا بي في المكر حجزتهم

When they plot against me with treachery, I confine them

ومونقة الرواد مهتزة الربا

With lanterns swaying and travellers thronging its heights

استغفر الله من تركي علانية

I seek forgiveness from Allah for my open sin,

لعمرك ما الدنيا بدار إقامة

By your life! This world is not a home for settling down.

بلوت عليا فألفيته وفيا وألفيت قوما نكث

I tested Ali and found him true,

سليمان ميمون النقيبة حازم

Sulaiman, fortuitous, the leader

خوان عيسى من نصف ترمسة

The bread of Jesus is made of half a lupine seed

آليت أهجو كريما عند نبوته

I was determined to satirize a generous man for his prophecy,

لي طيلسان أنا في يديه

I have a sword in my hands

إذا بت والفكر تستخرجان

When you stay up at night thinking,

أبا حسن خان ذاك النبيذ

O Abu Hasan Khan, that prophet

لئن أصبحت محروما

If I have become deprived

يا بياض المشيب سودت وجهي

O whiteness of old age, you have darkened my face

عجب الشيخ خالد من أناس

The Shaykh Khaled was amazed at people

واتر ظالم وناقض وتر

A tyrannical and unjust aggressor,

ولحية سائلة منصبه

With his flowing beard inclined

وما الحسب الموروث لا در دره

Not from inherited lineage comes glory’s gain

بخيل يصوم أضيافه

The miser starves his guests,

غدا الدهر مفترا أغر المضاحك

Time has turned playful, delighting with smiles

كل امرىء مدح امرأ لنواله

Every man praises a man for his generosity,

أصبح يعقوب وتبجيله

Jacob's dignity and reverence

قاتله الله فما

May God destroy him, for how far

ترى ابن سيرين ما رأى حلما

Did Ibn Sirin see a dream

أجدر مال أن يكون نائلا

The worthiest wealth is that which makes its owner generous,

أتت من بريدينا ضرطة

A fart came from our mailman

لله درك يا عباس قارئة

O Abbas, may God reward you, you eminent reciter

وسائلة عن الحسن بن وهب

A question about al-Hasan ibn Wahb

أتيت أبا جنادة مستنيلا

I came to Abu Janadah seeking refuge,

يا سليمان لا ألومك في رد

O Suleiman, I do not blame you for your

وسائل ذات يوم

Once upon a time, he had means,

لما تؤذن الدنيا به من شرورها

When the world forewarns of its evils

إن ابن بلبل نخلة

The son of a nightingale is a palm tree

أما تراه ومر الريح يعطفه

Don't you see him, as the wind blows by, bending him over

قل للأمير أدام الله نعماكا

Say to the prince—may Allah make your bounty last,

أبلغ أبا الدردام إن لاقيته

Deliver a message to Abul-Darda, if you meet him

مديحك من تطالب منه رفدا

Your praise from one you ask to add his stream

لو كنت تخلد خلد لؤمك

If you lived forever immortal

ومعاشر بصقوا على ما قلته

And those who spat on what I said

إن تطل لحية عليك وتعرض

If an overgrown beard falls upon you and persists

رأس أبي حفص عظيم المنفعه

The head of Abu Hafs is of great benefit

كان هزلا فعاد جدا غرامي

My flirtation turned serious, into passionate love,

وفيشة ترضي أكف الرازه

With a cup that satisfies the palms of the pure

أشرب الماء إذا ما التهبت

I drink water when flames ignite

أصبحت يا بن حريث اللؤم مرتبكا

You have become, O son of Harith, utterly confused,

يا أبا حفص المعير

O Abu Hafs al-Mu'ai,

لا زلت أبيض غرة وأياد

You are still as white as a flower bud

جزى الله عني قبح وجهي سعادة

May God reward me for the ugliness of my face with happiness

أرى للناس كلهم معاشا

I see livelihoods for all people,

تأمل العيب عيب

Criticizing fault is itself a fault,

أبا الصقر حسب المادحيك إذا غلوا

Abu al-Saqr, according to your eulogizers when they exaggerate

أيا شجرات الله ليس بقاطع

O trees of God, there is no cutter for you

يا أسدا يا ابن جهور طرقت

O lion, o son of valor, you have tread

عيدان أضحى ومهرجان

The days of festival and joy

أراني سعيد الجد يا ابن سعيد

I see myself made happy through his great deeds, O son of Sa'id

دخلت على خالد مرة

I entered upon Khaled one time

يا سيدا لم تزل فروع

O master, you were branches

دامت لك الصالحات والنعم

May you be blessed with goodness and bounty,

لي صديق صامتي

I have a silent friend

قل للذي أعجبت محاسنه

Tell the one whose beauty amazed me,

أيها الشاتمي في كل حين

O you who reproach me at all times,

ما بحريث نال ابنه الكرما

No son of a generous man ever attained generosity

أصبحت بين خصاصة وتجمل

I have fallen between deprivation and pretentiousness

ما يفيق الكتاب من ظلم إبراهيم

What awakens the writers from the injustice of Ibra

أعاذل إن شرب الراح رشد

I blame not the drinking of wine for it leads to virtue

ورياض تخايل الأرض فيها

Gardens where the ground imagines steeds

ليهنك حق رده الله منعما

You have a right that Allah has restored to you as a blessing

جزى القاسم الحسنى محسن وجهه

Al-Qasim rewards Al-Hasani, beautifying his face,

رعاية حقنا حق عليكا

Our care for your rights is your right upon us

نظرت في وجوه شعري وجوه

I looked into the faces of my poetry, faces

يا بني طاهر طهرتم وطبتم

O sons of purity, you are purified and wholesome,

حيتك عنا شمال طاف طائفها

Your greeting brought to us a north wind, circling

قلبي من الطرفِ السقيم سقيم

My heart from the frail side is frail

يا ليت شعري لو سئلت وقد

Oh, how I wish I had asked, after

أيا غرة العليا ويا عينها اليمنى

O proud beauty with charming eyes,

يبتُ أخو البلوى إذا الخلو غمضا

My friend who is the brother of affliction weeps when alone,

رمضان يزعمه الغواة مبارك

Ramadan, the misguided claim it blessed,

ألا يا زينة الدنيا جميعا

O you, the beauty of the world entire,

كثير نوالك في جنب ما

Your generosity is plenty compared to

ناشدتك الله في قدري ومنزلتي

I implore you in my worth and status

لئن كنت في حفظي لما أنا مودع

Though my virtues I keep concealed,

قل للأمير إذا مثلت له

Tell the prince if you meet him,

بني وهب الله جار لكم

God has granted you a neighbor

دع صاعدا يقتني الدنيا وزبرجها

Let one who is ascending acquire the world and its ostentation,

كفى بسراج الشيب في الرأس هاديا

The light of gray hair is guide enough

سأرحل يا أسماء عن دار معشر

I will leave, O Asma, the home of a people

قل لابن بوران إن كان ابن بوران

Say to Ibn Buran, if he is Ibn Buran

إذا عرضت لحية للفتى

When a young man grows a beard

ما أنصف الآس بالياسمين مشبهه

The cypress was not just to the jasmine

ونرجس كالثغور مبتسم

A narcissus like smiling lips

يا ابن داود يا فقيه العراق

O son of David, O jurist of Iraq

كأسك قد آذنك العود

Your cup announced to you the lute

بلوت طعوم الناس حتى لو انني

I have tasted the flavors of people, even if

أكلت رغيفا عند عيسى فملني

I ate a loaf at Jesus’s place, and it filled me

أيا هنتاه هل لك في هريس

O Hantah, do you have any interest in an old camel blanket

يا مستقر العار والنقص

O you who settled in disgrace and defect

ولا تغفلن أمرا وهى منه جانب

Do not neglect a matter, though it be small,

يا أبا الفضل ريع شامطياقي

O Abul Fadl, flow of Shamitiaqi

شهر القيام وإن عظمت حرمته

The month of rising though mighty is its sanctity

نبئت أن رجالا لا خلاق لهم

I was told that there are men without morals

عيني هذا ربيع الدمع فاحتشدا

My eyes, this is the spring of tears, so prepare

كان العزير زمانا

Once Al-‘Uzair was

أطلع الله وجه شهرِك هذا

May Allah reveal your face this month, O son of Yahya, like your auspicious face,

ومسمع لا عدمت فرقته

His company I never lack, its loss brings me no ease,

قرن سليمان قد أضر به

Solomon's horn has harmed him

ألم تر أنني قبل الأهاجي

Do you not see that before attacks

يا فاصد العرق المبارك فصده

O you who let the blessed sweat flow, so pure

وساق صبيح للصبوح دعوته

I called upon the morning breeze at dawn

إن اللسان الذي نسجت به

The tongue with which I wove your praise

رب هب لي في أبي الفضل رذاذ

My Lord, grant my father Al-Fadl the dew of health, O best refuge!

إذا نلت مأمولا على رأس برهة

If you obtain a long-awaited wish suddenly,

يا خالد ابن الخالدات

O Khaled, son of the immortal,

ما لمن حسنه الله وأعلى درجاته

He whom God has graced and raised his status high

يا من يعيب لدينا الراح مجتهدا

O you who find fault with our land as zealous,

يحول الحول في الوصل

The years go by in this union

مدحتك مختارا فلم تك طائلا

I praised you sincerely, but to no avail,

قد زفت الشمس إلى البدر

The sun has been married to the moon

بلغك الله أن يهنأ مولودك

May God grant that your newborn son brings you joy

رأيت التقاط جنى نخلة

I saw the gathering of the palm tree's fruit

إذا غمر المال البخيل وجدته

When wealth engulfs the miser you will find

إن أبا حفص له

Indeed Abu Hafs has a

غرد الطير في الرياض وناحا

The birds chirped in the gardens and cried,

قل للذين مدحتهم فكأنما

Tell those I praised that it was as though

خذ العفو واصفح عن أخٍ بعض عيبه

Forgive a brother's faults, and overlook

ليس كالسكر دواء لغناء كالدواء

Sugar is no cure

صبحة النوروز في الأحد

The morning of Nowruz on Sunday

لا يكشف الله عن وهب بن إسحاق

God does not relieve Wahb ibn Ishaq

لقد رأينا عجبا من العجب

We have seen wonders among wonders

شمري نحو العطاء المنتجع

Roll up your sleeves for productive giving,

أيها الأعور لم جشمتني

O one-eyed man, why did you deface me?

من كان يبكي الشباب من جزع

Whoever weeps for lost youth out of grief

لا تكذبن فما وجدي بمفقود

Do not deny me, for I have no solace without the lost one,

قالوا هجاك أبو حفص فقلت لهم

They said Abu Hafs derided you, so I said to them,

أرواح فيك سعوط لا يقام له

Souls in you are unrestrained debauchery,

سمتني خطة من الكره نقدا

You drew me a plan of hatred spontaneously

ألا أيها المطري العلاء بن صاعد

O you who rains blessings from on high, Ala'a son of Sa'id

سقيا لعيش مضى ما فيه تكدير

A drink to a life without bitterness

لتعط الولاية من فضلها

Give authority to one whose excellence

فقدتك يا ابن أبي طاهر

I lost you, O Ibn Abi Tahir

طاب نيروزك في يوم الخميس

Your Nayrouz was auspicious on Thursday,

يأبى لي الضيم فرعي السامي

My lofty spirit refuses oppression

الحمد لله لا شريك له

Praise be to Allah, who has no partner

يا خالد بن الخالدات مخازيا

O Khaled, of endless glories, as long

قالوا هجاك أبو حفص ولحيته

They said Abu Hafs criticized you and your beard

لانتقام المظلوم أربى على الظالم

The vengeance of the oppressed is more satisfying to the oppressor than his oppression of the oppressed.

في زخرف القول ترجيح لقائله

In ornamented words, praise for their speaker

من ظن أن الاستزادة في الهوى

Whoever thought that being too demanding in love

يا طيب ريق بات بدر الدجى

O gentle saliva, the full moon of dusk

يا درة البحر ضمها الصدف

O pearl of the sea, enclosed in its shell

يا قاتل السنور والديك

O killer of cats and cocks

يا ذا الذي قد حال عن عهدي

O you who have turned away from my covenant,

صديق ليس يمكن من خطابه

A friend whose conversation I cannot bear,

لئن جلا وأقمنا إنه لفتى

Though he departed, if we stayed it's because

ألا إنما الدنيا كجيفة ميتة

Behold, this world is but a carcass dead,

بروك لحاجات الغواة ملظة

The eager's requirements are scorching,

سألت فأعطيتم قليلا فلم يكن

I asked and you gave me little, it was not enough

لما حق من صد عن مشرب

When the right of one who was barred from a spring

لي صديق إذا رأت

I have a friend, when eyes

أيها السيد الذي فاق في الجود

O Lord who excelled in generosity

قدم الفطر صاحبا مودودا

The breaking of the fast has come as a friend,

خدن أبي المستهل خبرني

The cheek of Abu al-Mustahil told me

قولا لطوط أبي علي

Tell Abu Ali's parrot,

شاهدت في بعض ما شاهدت مسمعة

On occasions when assembled I espied

يظلم الناس يعلم الله أفرى

God knows who oppresses people, yet pretends otherwise

وناعورة شبهتها حين ألبست

A fountain I likened, when the sun arrayed

دهر علا قدر الوضيع به

Time has made the lowly man mighty

لو أنكم بعد غصتي بكم

If after my anger you appeased me,

لا عرتك الخطوب يا ابن حريث

The misfortunes did not afflict you, O son of Harith,

زعم الناس أن للسعد نجما

People claim that good fortune has but one star,

إن أنت صادفت أخا لحية

If you meet a man with a long beard

أرى الحر يجري بره ويدوم

I see the free man running with his freedom enduring

حق الأديب لازم لذي الكرم

The right of the literary man is owed to the generous

أقول إذ قابلني وجهه

When his face met mine,

ياوجنتيه اللتين من بهج

O my two gardens with joyous delight

بني صامت قد أصبحت دار خالد

In a silent house that has become the abode of the damned,

أيها الناكث العهود ستجني

O you who breaks pacts, you shall reap

أقاسم يا من لم يزل ذا نقيبة

I share, O you who has never ceased to be of nobility

لي صديق إذا تنوول عرضي

I have a friend, if he sees

تعممت إحصانا لرأسي برهة

I learned to cover my head for a while

خليلي قد عللتماني بالأسى

My two friends, you have saddened me with sorrow

إذا جددت نعمة لامرئ

If grace is renewed for a man,

ألا أيهذا السائلي عن معاشر

O questioner, asking about people

أبوه بلبل ضاو ويكنى

His father is a chirping nightingale, and his nickname

ظهور الأمور خلاف البطون

Appearances belie realities,

استقبل المهرجان بالفرح

Welcome the festival with joy

قالوا أأرهنت دما

They said, "Have you pledged blood?"

قينة عند خالد

The flask at Khaled's place

النجح سؤلي فإن ألوى به قدر

Success is my hope, though fate may thwart it,

يا ويح هذا الطبيب ويحاه

The mirror may hide from you

بيوم بدر أعز الدين ناصره

On the day of Badr, he supported the religion victoriously

لو أنني ملكت طرد محبتي

If I were granted control to banish my love for you

لك الخير إني أستزيد ولا أشكو

Goodness is yours, though I ask for more and do not complain,

رقعة من معاتب لك ظلت

A parchment of reproach that remains shaded

لها ناظر بالسحر في القلب نافث

She has a watcher in her heart at dawn exhaling,

يختل حولا بخلال واحد

He swerves around in but a single flaw,

قالوا انتبذ قلت مهلا

They said "drink!" I said "wait,

أظنك مما قد مطلت مثوبتي

I think you are one who has long delayed my reward,

عجبا يا قوم للصنع

How strange, my people, of wealth

لا عدمت السرور يا بن أبي بكر

You have not lost joy, O son of Abu Bakr

ود المبرد أن الله بدله

Al-Mubarrad wished that God would change

يا أيها المتعالي عن معونتنا

O you who are aloof from helping us

كل من خالف النعيم فمغبوط

All who reject bliss are wretched fools,

يا عجبا من خالد في صبره وجلده

How strange is Khaled

سأثني بنعماك التي لو كفرتها

I will praise Your blessings, though if I deny them,

فلو شهدت مقامي ثم أنديتي

Had you witnessed my status, and then called me

أبا حسن لا زلت منا على قرب

O Abu Hasan you are still close to us

زعم الناس خالدا بغاء

They accused Khaled of being licentious,

أبصرت باقة نرجس

I saw a bouquet of narcissus

قل لأبي سهل الذي ورث

Say to Abu Sahl who inherited gentle refinement and noble horses,

وخلته أن نكر الدهر منظري

I spurned the love of an ignoble friend,

يا أيها الرجل المدلس نفسه

O you disguised man

ولما رأيت الدهر يؤذن صرفه

When I saw time signaling its turning away

قد أناسي الهم نجواه

Sometimes I forget troubles in joyous song

باكر صباح المهرجان

At dawn in Mahrajaan

لعن الله خالدا

May Allah curse Khaled

لي لسان ما زال يطريك في النثـر

My tongue still praises you in poetry

أمرتجع في كل يوم صنيعة

You commit the same crime every day against your master

رفعت إلى وديك أبصار همتي

I raised my ambitions to you, my beloved

لنا صديق كلا صديق

We have a friend, though no true friend is he,

قولا لمن عاب شعر مادحه

Tell the one who finds fault with my eulogizing poetry,

رب هيفاء رداح

Many a radiant Eve in a place of solitude,

إن كنت من جهل حقي غير معتذر

If out of ignorance you will not apologize for wronging me,

وقد كنت ذا حال أطيل ادكارها

I once lived in a state whose memory I cherished,

يا مددي حين خانني مددي

O my supporter when my supporter failed me

قد ساءني أن بز تربي قناعه

I regret that my pure earth is now impure

أيا ثقفي أراك الذي

O Thaqifite, I see you are one who

ما ضرطة بدرت وهبا بواهبة

No reproach ever stained a gift from one who gives

زعموا أنك يا خالد

They claimed that you, O Khallad

ولوطي قدام وخلف عذلته

The sodomite front and back I reproached

لأبي يوسف بنت ليته أعقم ليته

For Abu Yusuf a daughter was born

علني أحمد من الدوشاب

Ahmad offered me a drink of poison

علي دين ثقيل أنت قاضيه

I am heavily burdened with debt, and you are its judge,

سألتك حاجة فسعيت فيها

I asked you for a favor, so you strove for it

لله خالد الطائي من رجل

Khalid Al Taei belongs to a man

يا ابن بوران يا جعلت فدائي

O Ibn Būrān, O you who are my sacrifice

ليهن الضياع وكتابها

Let the neglected government offices and their clerks rejoice,

أصبح ذا والد وذا ولد

He who was once an egg now has a father and son

أغضى أبو بكر على الهون

Abu Bakr turned a blind eye to insults

قل خالد وخلاك ذم

Say Khaled left you in blame

ألا فاسقني خمرا بصفو سلافة

Come, pour me wine, pure and free of dregs,

وقتك يد الإله أبا علي

Time with you O Abul Ali

فتى إن أجد في مدحه فلأنني

O youth! If I excel in praising him, it is because

مدرك عاين أمه

A young man caught sight of his mother

كاد الرشاء الذي أدلي إليك به

The emptied water-skin, which to thee was granted,

رب غلام وجهه لا يفضحه

Many a youth whose face shame does not defile

ما فيه معنى لمشتهيه

There is no meaning to his desires

إنما ألبس العمامة في الصيف

I only wear the turban in winter

الدمع في العين لا نوم ولا نظر

Tears in the eyes, no sleep nor sight

عسى ولعل طيبتا حياتي

Mayhope and perhaps sweeten my life

قد قلت للعذال عند تتبعي

I said to the blamer as he traced my greying hair each day:

قالوا هجاك أبو حفص فقلت لهم أعاش

They said Abu Hafs satirized you, so I told them:

كيف يا من بها قوام حياتي

How could you, O she who is the pillar of my life

لم أطلها كما أطال رشاء

I did not praise them as long as Rishā' praised,

ومعتضد بالله أضحى وربه

With God as his supporter he rises, and his Lord

تعالت قرون أبي يوسف

The horns of Abu Yusuf have risen high,

إذا حاولت تطفيلا

If you try to parasite

أبا جعفر هل أنت قابل شاعر

Oh Abu Ja'far, have you met a poet

أترضى بأن النخل أصبح لم يحل

Are you satisfied that the palm tree no longer bears fruit

تجافت بنا منذ اشتكيت المراقد

Since I complained, estrangement has come between us

قل لابن بلبل لم غلطت

Tell the nightingale's son, why hast thou erred

خبرونا أن قد هجوت ابن رومي

They told me you have lampooned Ibn Rumi

ليت شعري من ناكه بهجائي

Would that I knew who with satire assailed me,

تتجافى جنوبهم

Their passion shuns the pillow’s touch,

ترحل من هويت وكل شمس

I bid farewell to my identity as each sun

لعمرك ما أعطى الرجال حقوقهم

By your life, men were not given their rights

أنت تيس والتيس أش

You are a goat, yet the goat is better

قالت غلالته القصب لما تثنى وانتصب

His shackles said to the reed:

يا بائع البيت بزق واحد

O seller of the house for one coin,

ولقد منعت من المرافق كلها

I have been denied all companions,

رواغي رواغ الخائف القلب لا السالي

Stay away, stay away o frightened heart, not relaxed

قل لأيوب والكلام سجال

Say to Ayyub, and the speech is quarrelsome

تلقى المحاسن إلا في بني مطر

Beauty is found only among the Bani Matar

الحمد للَّه يا أبا حسنِ

Praise be to Allah, O Abu Hasan

يسمو إلى المجد أقوام فتلهزهم

Some people aspire to glory, but it shakes them,

أمون من العظعاظ عند مروقها

She glides with grace, this bird, when taking flight,

أرى خالدا يرمي صفاتي عداوة

I see Khaled throwing my qualities to enmity

أحباءنا ما كان لي عنكم صبر

Our loved ones, I had no patience being away from you

يا ابن الوزيرين سمعا من أخي طلب

ولقد تربع لا تربع بعدها

وكأن جرذان المحلة كلها

يقولون لي ألفاظ هجوك عندنا

عدلت عن الصبا صعري وميلي

وأحسن ما في الوجوه العيون

إذا المرء أرقني مدحه

طرقت بنشوة روضة ربعية

ومولى يجر الشر لي غير مؤتل

نحن تركناه قصيرا أصلعا

وطويل القرن إلا أنه

يا شيخ عد عن الجلوس

عجبا من موفق الرأي ولى

وحلس من الكتان أخضر ناعم

لا أزال اللَّه نعمته

إذا ما المدح سار بلا ثواب

شيخ لنا من آل مسعود

ذريني قسطنطين آكل شهوتي

تتلقى بالعبس وهي تحيي

وإذا اشتهيت خرا فمثل نتنه

فما قلوص تبيت الليل معملة

ولي أصدقاء كثيرو السلام

أتود أنك تجتني ثمر العلا

بكيت فلم تترك لعينك مدمعا

يا أبا سهل نثاك المستمع

حليف سهاد ليله كنهاره

تعجل مولود ليمهل والد

تلقى بتسبيحة من حسن ما خلقت

عبثت به الحمى فورد جسمه

وثقيل جليسه في سباق

يظلم الناس في القيادة أفرى

وثدي ناهدات

وهبت له عيني الهجوعا

فديت دما أريق من الفصيد

تعيب شعري وقد طارت نوافذه

يا خليلي تيمتني وحيد

إذا ما شنطف نكهت أماتت

يا ضد عيسى جاء من لا أب

معذر فوق مورديه

يا مانعي باليأس من

وشيخ يبيت غلام له

ضربتها عنك صفحا بعدما لحقت

أقرِن إلى حسنِ وجهك الحسنِ

أقول لما رأيت عرسي

ما بال فرخ أبوه بلبل قمل

قل للوزير أدام الله غبطته

رب أطلق يدي في كل شيخ

أنظروني بني ثوابة حتى

لخالد بيت سوء مثل ساكنه

إنما يبكي شجي شجنه

يا من هواه من القلوب مكين

قد جرى الغيث على عاداته

لي طيلسان إن يبده زمانه

يا باني الحصن أرساه وشيده

أجنت لك الوجد أغصان وكثبان

أفي هوى يوسف ألام

وفتى يمنع الطعام

صِلوا نِصف كنيته باسمه

أيها القائل بالجسم

ذاد عن مقلتي لذيذ المنام

قل لابن بوران ولا تأثم

يا دهر كم تسبك المصفى

كفى البدء منك العود في كل موطن

أفيضا دما إن الرزايا لها قيم

ولقد يؤلفنا اللقاء بليلة

وما سد قول في فعالك خلة

يغزو العدا في ليل زنج

هل حاكم عدل الحكومة

وقفات رأيك في الخطوب تأمل

إذا ما أخو الخمسين أمل مثلها

حذار فإن الليث قد فر نابه

تجلد عمرو للهجاء تجملا

أخالد يا ابن الخالدات مخازيا

ما استشرفت منك العيون ضئيلا

لا تصدفا عن دمن المنازل

بني هاشم ما لي أراكم كأنكم

الناس كلهم فدى لك

لذوي الجدال إذا غدوا لجدالهم

أريد جداك وأستمنحك

أم حفص صلعة الشيخ

أصبحت عاديت للصبا رشدك

أرى ماء وبي عطش شديد

طلبت لديكم بالعتاب زيادة

قل للسفيه شنيف

سبقت إلي صنيعة من محسن

غموض الحق حين تذب عنه

قولا لذات الركب المحلوق

قل لمن يملك رقي

صحائف لي فيها ذنوب كثيرة

رأيت أبا إسحاق والفحل فوقه

أبعد لقاي دونك كل قفر

يا ليت شعري والحوادث جمة

سقى الله قصرا بالرصافة شاقني

إذا فقت الضئيل بحسن جسم

لها جبهة فيها سطوح نصيف

توهمت قد سوفت بالغوث راجيا

وأما نومكم عن كل خير

ضراط ابن ميمون فيه سعه

أبا علي للناس ألسنة

راع فؤادي منك ما راعه

إذا أولي النعمى دعا الله أن يرى

ألا قل لذي العطن الواسع

سهولة الشريعه

ولما أجمعوا بينا وشدت

ولا رشد إلا بتوفيقه

إن كفيك لقفل

ألوى بقلبك من غصون الناس

لهوت عن وصف الطلول الدارسه

يسائلني فرخ الزنا فيم عمتي

خير ما استعصمت به الكف عضب

تغرق بالكيزان ناعورة

وشربت كأس مدامة من كفها

يا أيها السائلي لأخبره

عيب الأناة وإن كانت مباركة

أناديك يا من ليس في سمعه وقر

أبا حسن طال المطال ولم يكن

غلط الطبيب علي غلطة مورد

فيم اجتهادي في محاولة الغنى

سقيا لأيام خلت إذ لم أقل

أشد بأيامنا لتشهرها

يا أيها الموعوظ في لشكوه

أعيني جودا بالدموع لفقدها

زلزلت ضرطته بالصيمره

لله لحية حائك أبصرتها

هل ينتهي نظر إلا إلى نظر

حجر الرجل وجهه

لا يغضبن لعمرو من له خطر

يود الفتى طول تعميره

مدحت سليمان المغلب مدحة

سوءة للدهر إذ يخلط

لا بدع إن ضحك القتير

يا صلعة لأبي حفص ممردة

سأنظر نحو دارك حين أخشى

ما زادني نظري يا من سررت به

نفرت هيفك الليالي وغيدك

بات يدعو الواحدا الصمدا

خبا نحس وأعقب منه سعد

تكايدنا بالنتن أنفاس شنطف

تبيت مورِد فسق لا مزيد به

أنى تماطلني وأنت جواد

يقول الحبيب وطالبته

لم يطرف طارف المساعي

سهل عندي خلتي أنني

النار في خديه تتقد

باقي كتابي بيدي

بان الشباب ونعم الصاحب الغادي

يرى ما وأى عنه الرجاء كما وأى

إن كنت تعطيني عطاءك

يا سائلي بأميرنا

ما كل أمر أضاع المرء فرصته

تحلبت الأنواء بعد جمودها

ألا قل لسيدنا قل له

نار الروية نار جد منضجة

حتى متى يوري سواي وأقتدح

إن كنت ضنا بي عتبت لأنني

قل للحكيم أبي الحسين ومن جلا

أراها فأزداد اشتياقا وصبوة

تأدب كي يقال فتى أديب

إذا ساء ظن بمسترفد

ولحية لو شاء ذو المعارج

أمامك فانظر أي نهجيك تنهج

دبنفسج جمعت أوراقه فحكى

وحبب يوم السبت عندي أنني

أكف الغواني بالخنا خضرات

عهدنا بالرياح كانت تبارى

عزاؤك أن الدهر ذو فجعات

قد وصلت قارورتي وحاجتي ما وصلت

وامتناع النفس مما تشتهي

طربت إلى المراة فروعتني

أمسى الشباب رداء عنك مستلبا

سيدي أنت شاخص مصحوب

وشاعر أجوع من ذيب

ما أنس لا أنس هندا آخر الحقب

ما استب قط اثنان إلا غلبا

للموز إحسان بلا ذنوب

أبا جعفر واصفح عن الفاء إنها

وتسليني الأيام لا أن لوعتي

سأقصر عن خالد منطقي

ألا ابلغ لديك بني طاهر

وإذا ما تحلت الأرض بالنر

لئام كالخنازير

عيني شحا ولا تسحا

ليس حمد الجفون في مريها النوم

تصبرت عنك فما أصبر

وزهدني في الناس معرفتي بهم

ما يوم بين الحبيب بالسعد

بلد صحبت به الشبيبة والصبا

خليل أظل إذا زارني

قولا لنحوينا أبي حسن

ويوم كأن النوم يغتال طوله

إذا كان امرؤ لأتي مال

كأن له في الجو حبلا يبوعه

يا ابن حرب كسوتني طيلسانا

بأبي وجه مضيء

يا قابل المدح فيه منا

لنا صديق يدعي منة

أم حفص صلعة الشيخ أبي

كم قرون في رؤوس

تباين الأصل منه

ألست ترى اليوم المليح المغايظا

ولحية سوء ولكنها

يا سائلي عن مجمع اللذات

ولحية سوء ولكنها لصاحبها

بأبي حسن وجهك اليوسفي

لا ينكر الناس هزلا في

أبن لي لم تعمم طابقيا

من رأى مثل خالد فضل حلم

أصبح هذا الجحر قد وافقت

لو يعلم ابن أبي سميه

هنيئا يا أبا حسن هنيئا

وأشهد ما يكون عل هجاء

قد طال بسطك آمالي وقد ملأت

لعا من عاثر لك يا ابن يحيى

قد ذقت أنواع الطعوم فلم أجد

لج الفؤاد فليس يلذعه

ليعاقب وسمي جود وليه

لو أن لي أختا فأنكحتها

نزهة عندي كاسمها نزهه

تفاحة في رأس سنبويه

سقني الأسكركع الصنبر

لم يبق لي صبر ولكنما

شمس مكونة في خلق جارية

إبليس إن كنت من المنظرين

أغلاء وبلاء

ألا خذها إليك عن الحرون

يا من قسا لما شكوت

للمادحون اليوم أهل زماننا

ألا يا ابن المرازبة الهجان

من يكن يكرم اللئام فقد أضحوا

قد كنت أستسقيك ظمآنا

ذهب الذين تهزهم مداحهم

ما راح مغبونا بصفقة خاسر

ليس تغني شهادة الشعر الأسود

هذا كتاب من أخ شاكر

ليس الكريم الذي يعطي عطيته

يا هل تعود سوالف الأزمان

قرأت في وجهك عنوانا

إن إسماعيل فاعلم

لا تلح من تفتنه قينه

نبئت جحظة يستعير جحوظه

قل لفتى لم يزل بصورته

لم يظلم الدهر في أن حاف مجتهدا

أعانقها والنفس بعد مشوقة

ما أشبه العرف والإحسان بالحسنِ

قل لخلي أبي علي فتى البصرة

مالي إذا زدت حبا زدت مقلية

ألا إن مدحا غدا حلية

يا أيها الرجل المسود شيبه

كان للأرض مرة ثقلان

أستغفر الله من ذنبي ومن خطئي

ثلاثة أشياء ففي اثنين منهما

قدوم سعادة وقفول يمن

أرى الشعراء حظوا عندكم

يا أيها السيد الذي وهنت

جرى الأضحى رسيل المهرجان

يا من عكفنا عليه لائذين به

إن قال لا قالها للآمريه بها

وليس حراما شتم من كان مفحما

كثرت فتوح أميرنا وتتابعت

وطئت أبا إسحق أثبت وطأة

لو هداك القصد فهم

يا رب ما أطول البلاء وما

لشاعرنا خالد في استه

وكم جاهلٍ قد أبدأ الجهل مرة

وفي أبي سعد لؤم

أنذرني دقلش بنادرة

إن عبد القوي ذاك المكنى

آراؤكم ووجوهكم وسيوفكم

ألم ترني استصحبت دون صحابتي

أين من قال بأن ليس

عطفا بني وهب علي

كم بغور الشآم غادرت منهم

لعمري لقد غاب الرضا فتطاولت

ضحك الربيع إلى بكا الديم

أبا الفضل ما مثلي يخالك راضيا

كم جارع جرع المكاره عالما

يقول علي مرة وأنالني

رأيت جليسي لا يزال يروعه

تفكرت في حيف الزمان عليكم

وفقت بمطراب العشيات والضحى

لا تصنعن صنيعة مبتورة

أهنئ الفطر بوجه الإمام

فرح الناس أن تهيأ في الفطر

غضب ألح من السحاب الأسحم

يا من أؤمل دون كل كريم

عيني جودا على حبيبكما

ندمت على أن كنت يوما دعوتني

ومن نكد الدنيا إذا ما تنكرت

يا عليلا جعل العلة

اسلم على الأيام

ليهنك أن أفطرت لا متطلعا

ترفع إلى النجم العلي مكانه

أبدر السماء وغيث السماء

أساء الرأي أم عزب الرسول

قني يا إلهي شح نفسي فإنني

يا ذا الذي كنيته كنيتي

أيست من دهري ومن أهله

أبدا نحن في خلاف فمني

يا من يعد من الجواهر عرفه

تلون أخلاق الفتى من ملاله

أحمل الوزر والأمانة والدي

لا تسم الحمد أبا أحمد

إذا احتضر الشح النفوس فخالد

أبا حسنٍ حمدي متى ما بغيته

رب أناس فرضوا فافترضوا

تنافستك من الأعياد أربعة

رأيتكم تبدون في الحرب عدة

عنفت شيخي أذان في مواثبة

سألتك بالأصلِ الذي أنت فرعه

خليلي عوجا بالديار فإنما

وكم قائل قد قال لي فيك مرة

بالجانب الشرقي شمس أشرقت

أبا حسن قد قلت لو كان فعال

دع الأجمال مرتحله

إذا أنت أزمعت الصنيعة مرة

بنات ثوابة ما في الأنام

إن أنت لم ترع وأنت المفضال

قومي بنو العباس حلمهم

قل لأبي سهل الذي ترك

جاركم لا يعاد من علله

سماك خرءا بخل

إذا كان صبري للعاجل

عيني لعينك حين تنظر مقتل

كريم كثرت قدما

حذار عرامي أو نظار فإنما

وهاذر يبلغني هدره

تخذتكم درعا وترسا لتدفعوا

من عذيري من الخلائف ضلوا

ليطمعك في رجعات الملول

يا أبا أيوب هذي كنية

نزا بعض المجانين

إذا المرء لم يظهر لطالب

أذقتنا ودك حتى إذا

يا أبا المستهل ماذا تقول

أخالد قد أصبحت قيم نسوة

طباهجة كأعراف الديوك

لا زال يومك عبرة لغدك

هل حسن في نحلك

مقل العين لا عدمت كراك

ألا يا قاتل الديك

تخذت عرضك منديلا أمش به

إني إذا ما الخصم في الغي ابترك

أيها السيد الجليل أدام الله

يا من جلا دهرنا دجاه به

قد لعمري اقتصصت من كل ضرس

رأيت منكسر السكان ظاهره

يا أبا حفص المبرز في الشعر

ألا يا ابن القنوط عجبت جدا

أبق من مالك الممزق

لم يظلم الدهر أن توالت

يا يوم إسحاق بن عبد الملك

أقسمت أن أخا نفاكا

أعوذ بحقويك العزيزين أن أرى

لما استقل بك الطريق إلى العدا

يفدي الأباعد من تلي ويليكا

تكلمي في كمامك

وسمت همتي فجاوزت العي

الحمد لله الذي نجى السمك

حيتك عني السعود والفلك

وقفت وقفة بباب الطاق

ومدامة كدم الذبيح شربتها

سائل أبا الصقر إذا جئته

وما تعدم الدنيا الدنية أهلها

علاك قناع المشيب اليقق

أنا راع لما صفا منك قدما

أغثنا فأنت المرء يهتف باسمه

صدور فوقهن حقاق عاج

رجت منك نفسي سبقك الغيث بالندى

ما للبضائع بين الناس كلهم

إن اليزيديين قوم أحرزوا

بنفسي أمير أنصف الناس كلهم

زلقت في سلاحها

أبا الفضل لا تحتجب إنني

إذا ضحكتم ضحكنا في مفارحكم

المرثديون سادات تعد لهم

رأيت الدهر يرفع كل وغد

أيعيب مشيي جاهل لو أنه

حاجيت فضلا وهو ذو فطنة

لا تحسبن عرامي إن منيت به

أيركب عمرو حوله من يحفه

ما نكهت في مجلس شنطف

وجهي يرق عن اقتضائك حاجتي

يا أيها الملك السعيد المعرس

يا قمر الموكب والمجلس

وتال تلا يوما فأنسي آية

المرء يعجز لا المحالة تعجز

قل لنا يا سلامة بن سعيد

لا تسقرط يا أبا يحيى

إذا أبو قاسم جادت لنا يده

ومن يك رهنا لليالي ومرها

ولحية ذات أصواف وأوبار

بحرمة أيري يا كنيزة إنه

أمت بجود من وداد ومن شكر

بدل الطرف من النوم السهر

أملي فيه ليأسي قاهر

يقول وقد سددوا نحوه

أما رأيت الدهر كيف يجري

هي الفتاة إِذا اعتلت مفاصلها

زارتك بعد النوم غير زوور

وضعت كقضبان اللجين

رأيت جحظة يخشى الناس كلهم

قد قلت إذ قالوا بجهلهم

لخالد زوجة يلقمها

رأيتك لم تحسن ثوابي ولم تجب

بوجه أبي إسحاق صدع كطيزه

تخلفت شنطف فقلنا

أعجر يدعى مضرط الأبكار

يا ابن فراس لك أم فاجره

ألا بيني وبينكم النفار

قل للثوابي إذا جئته

إن خيرا من أن ترى في أن قد

شكرت مديحي فيك إذ سبق الجدا

بليت فأبق على سائري

ألا ليت شعري حين أخلفت موعدي

شنطف يا عوذة السموات والأرض

يا من له صفوات الحسن والخير

من الحيف تخسيس النوال ومطله

صادت فؤادي عشية النفر

يا من زكا جهره وإسراره

ولولاك لم تعدم دماء ممارة

لعمري لقد أنكرت غير نكير

ليس على الضارط تعيير

لو كنت مجبول السماح

العين لا تنفك من نظر

أبو علي ابن أبي قره

وإذا بغى باغ عليك بجهله

ما إن علمنا من طعام حاضر

ألا بكرت حرى الملام تسعر

أبا حفيص رويدا

يا غيورا أن يهتك المستور

تنافسني في مؤخر البكر سادرا

عظم الله يمن فطرك فطرا

مدحت أبا العباس أطلب رفده

أبلغ فتى آل بشر بل مؤملهم

تعنت بالمسواك أبيض صافيا

رأيت في المائق ما لا يرى

ما أوجب العفو على سيد

سمي خليل الله لا زلت مثله

وإخوان تخذتهم دروعا

لئن فخرت بآباء ذوي حسب

لو كان مثلك في زمان محمد

كمد ليس ينفد

ويح الطبيب الذي جست يداه يدك

إن أبا حفص سيستعدي

قالوا هجاك أبو حفص فقلت لهم استبطأت

يا مظهرا نخوة عند اللقاء لنا

أراد الغيث أن يحكيك جودا

بني طاهر مدحي لكم دون غيركم

لا أحب الرئيس ذا العز

يباري الرياح بمثل الرياح

حتى علوتهم بالسيف فانتبهوا

لئن حجبوا عني أبا الفضل ضلة

صورته ناعتة خبره

مالي أسل من القراب وأغمد

ومن ظن أن الاستزادة في الهوى

أخالد لا تكذب فلست بخالد

أنجز مواعدك التي قدمتها

يا سيدي أنجز حر ما وعد

ما أنت بالمحسود لكن فوقه

لا تجبنن لأن النفس واحدة

أيها الواعد المماطل بالبر

ولقد رأيتك واليا مستعليا

صبرت فأخلف الملك المجيد

أجد بربات الحجال صدودها

يبيع الكماة الذائدون دماءهم

سأحمد بعد اللّه في كل مشهد

بكاؤكما يشفي وإن كان لا يجدي

لأبي بكر كلام واحد لا يتعدى

ذكر الحبيب فقام فردا

خسأت كلبا مر بي مرة

لا تزل أيها الإمام السعيد

لي زرع أتى عليه الجراد

ما خمدت ناري ولكنني

إن أسرق الشعراء شعرهم

قل لأمير المؤمنين المعتاد

متى عهدك بالكرخ

أإسماعيل من رجل

أرى العصفور يعبث بالفخاخ

أحمى علينا نخلكم ذيخه

يا صارخا في جموع ليس تصرخه

وافى وحياني بكأس وراح

الطرف يقطف من خديك تفاحا

أجعفر حزت جميع العيوب

بؤسا لوهب ماله بين الخليقة قد فضح

إذا ما مدحت أبا صالح فأعدد له الشتم

لك ريحان وراح ومجيدات ملاح

ألا ليست الدنيا بدار فلاح

قل لنجح أخطأت باب النجاح

يا لائمي في الراح غير مقصر

نصحت أبا بكر فرد نصيحتي

إن الدمشقي عبد حاجته

بني المشرف جذ الله دابركم

يا داعيا نحو العلاء مثوبا

أراك أشفقت من الفالج

عيني إلى من أحب تختلج

يا دهر ما سبك غير ذي الخبث

أغصان بان تحتهن وعاث

رويدك أيها الرجل المنادي

تبحثت عن أخباره فكأنما

إن أنت صادفت شيخ سوء

مدح عليك ثيابها فكأنما

ولا عيب في أخلاقه غير أنه

بما أهجوك يا أنت

نجا يونس في اللجة من حاوية الحوت

فقدتك يا كنيزة كل فقد

وقروه لجاهه ولسمته

كل نفس لموقت ليس حي بمفلت

وجدت أبا عبد الإله خليفة لصاحبه

رأيت عبيد الله في كل ليلة

لله خالد الطائي من رجل

يوم كأن سماءه تحكي جفوني حين بنتا

وفي أربع مني خلت منك أربع

لعمري لقد عولت يوم تحملوا

يا أبا روبة الريب يا مسيحا بغير أب

فأما ابن بوران الذي تذكرونه

مجرب أنه إذا نسب

يا شبابي وأين مني شبابي

لن تنال العلا بشكر عريب

أحباي كم لي نحوكم من تحية

على عاقد الزنار تحت قضيب

كم نسام الأذى كأنا كلاب

سهل حجابك أيها المحجوب

أما يستديم المرء نعمة ربه

أيها المهدي ثناء جميلا شارك التنميق فيه الصواب

وكم عائب قد عابني وهو صادق

رأيتكم تستعدون السلاح ولا

أصبحت شيخا له سمت وأبهة

فتحت أبواب مدح لا انغلاق لها

دريرة تجلب الطربا

أبا حسن وأنت فتى أديب

إن أبا حفص وعثنونه

أبا جعفر لا زلت معطى وواهبا

نفسي الفداء لمن حبتني كفه

يا ثوبه الأزرق الذي قد

لنعم اليوم يوم السبت حقا

وقهوة رقت عن الهواء

ما للملول وفاء في مودته

يا ويح هذا الطبيب ويحاه

نشر آذار في الثرى حللا

أيا رب لو سويت بيني وبينه

لم يصف الدواء جسمك إلا

قل لعبد القوي تبا لعلم

سوءة سوءة لك ابن البراء

قل لعبد القوي أنت قوي

أخالد يا ابن الخالدات مخازيا

يا طالبا عند الإمام هوادة

عاقنا أن نعود أنك أوليت

يوم الثلاثاء ما يوم الثلاثاء

قدم الإمام يسير تحت لوائه

يهنأ بالإفطار قوم لأنهم

وجاهل أعرضت عن جهله
