1. Who has seen eyes like mine shed tears in anguish,
The narcissus gifted me a hyacinth.

2. How beautiful are these two flowers paired,
How fragrant are these two mates, nay, how delightful!

3. Both are musk when they exude fragrance,
The lamp of beauty reached its highest brilliance.

4. Passion passed by it, so it shuddered,
When it saw that shining forehead,

5. Those knitted eyebrows,
And that captivating glance,

6. With movements in the cheeks, even when still,
And the surface of that smoothly soft cheek,

7. And those lips clearly divided,
And those soft, curling tresses,

8. And that perfect, flawless physique,
And good character, not crooked,

9. And the mind and intimacy, strongly cemented,
It made the flame of beauty brighter, nay, it ignited,

10. So it stirred the heart, as it was stirred,
I swore by the night as the night darkened,

11. Nay, by the radiant dawn as it shone,
That I would clothe poetry adorned with jewels,

12. Gifted freely, hoping and the hope of one who hopes,
The gift of salvation of one saved did not miss,

13. And a worry for it always finds relief,
For he transcended every righteous approach,

14. I clothe him in my willing praise, not reluctantly,
Safe from blame the conscience would spurn,

15. With him it finds safety, nay, calm,
What could hinder my praises woven?

16. For a benefactor who granted me relief,
The easiest thing to deserve being crowned,

17. A freeman, when called upon one fateful day, stirred
And roused determination, nay ignited it,

18. And went about doing good, then brought it to fruition,
He has always been pursuing perfection,

19. Rejoicing in kindness, not provoked,
My praise of him tears through barriers,

20. And does not rest from heaping virtues upon him,
It orders his generosity to spread about,

21. So if he saw a noble palm, he joined it in marriage
To bounty, from which wealth is derived,

22. His nature most perfect, not defective,
Whoever attains his company guards against being lured away,

23. He has spread from my gratitude plains outstretched,
Until he became a devoted slave to it, cured,

24. But I complain to him of the unripe fruit,
For he was determined until he was stubborn,

25. In shunning me until he became unbending,
Nay, he closed up shop, then bolted it,

26. Turning me away, and his shunning was most severe,
While I have always been fragrant with kindnesses,

27. Nay, inclined toward moral excellence,
So let the virtuous freeman be restrained, tamed,

28. With some of what he hoarded or stinted,
No harm if he is made bald or limps,

29. Either one, even if he is made deaf or blinded,
And recall the marigold succeeding the amaryllis,

30. Saffron in color, mimicking the water lily,
For if he visits a friend, he delights him,

31. He has always been plunging into my pool of gratitude,
And in an affection never adulterated,

32. O you of kindness which spread about!
Against my will, without my approval or embarrassment,

33. Complete it, else it would be a crooked kindness,
If you complete a steady, gentle kindness,

34. Nay, the most well-mannered hospitality, safe and sound,
To the highest extents of glory extract and bring out,

35. What you owe me in taxes paid up in full,
Which is praise sought and desired,

36. That which gladdens he who attains it,
Gratitude, if you make it ripe, comes ripe,

37. It pleases, and if you make it pleasing, it is pleasing,
So the generosity of a generous one is never unripe

38. For a noble, generous brother of good company,
Not criticized by scholars as confused babble,

39. Nor deemed foolish by ignoramuses,
And see, follow not the crooked path,

40. How many clouds of gloom were dispelled by one providing relief!
So let one suffering constriction and distress await relief,

41. God will make a way out for each,
And virtue will ascend to Him by a path,
