1. Be resolute, O Quraysh ibn Faras
For you are among those with strong arms

2. And every long arm that fate extends
The short-armed fail to attain

3. And nothing remains for the youth
Except a lofty honor from deeds

4. This world passes with its dwellers
So the most virtuous is the farthest from decline

5. And you have been enabled a firm foothold
So do not waver from the highest ranks

6. And prepare praise for fate not like
'Amr's, he is truly unlucky

7. For fate has no partners
And unhappy is the fate that deserts

8. Like fertile pasture without shepherds
Or a vast land without rightful people

9. So do not befriend Abu Hassan out of fortune
Though its companions are the virtuous

10. Oh, a day to one like me, disgraced,
In the meadows of fallen outcasts

11. And your luck hosted pleasures
That diminish the feats of hunters

12. Like 'Amr or the equals of 'Amr
Oh people, too majestic is blasphemy!

13. Is a garden adorned and extended
With ostrich-like beasts or foxes?

14. I called you humbly from below
So do not be haughty lest you be summoned from above

15. And people will support me against you strongly
My reign over the tyrant lasts long

16. And before you I was not supported over oppression
Nor have I tried the edges of power

17. But I have turned for refuge
To a lofty, high-peaked wilderness

18. It is dearer to me than any spear
And scimitar when called to fight

19. How many a disgraced gained glory without fighting
And how many a dignified was debased in battle

20. I swear by the judgment of our chosen master
When he resolves an ambiguity by his wisdom

21. And my deficiency after his favor towards me
And the appraiser has despaired of my justice

22. You have committed one of two acts
From which came my corruption or madness

23. Either you have weakened my throne
Or made my exile deserved

24. I seek remedy from you for my condition
But you wish upon me an incurable disease

25. Your procrastination has weakened my patience
And your injustice has exhausted my cunning

26. And I used to praise you for favors
May God guide you better than my praise

27. So do not procrastinate reward and let my praise
Take from far future to destination

28. I swear you have judged without fairness
You felt safe while keeping me occupied

29. You have masked time to me while you are heedless
And time has masked you while you are governer

30. Why and how did you feel safe from my rebuke?
While my flood and downpour were mighty

31. Did you think I forgot my rights heedlessly?
Or were certain of my cowardice and withdrawal?

32. Or did you take my forbearance and forgiveness for granted?
Or were you satisfied with my composure in my conditions?

33. Both reasons warrant you match me
So dispute with me for you are eloquent

34. You have evaded the evil consequences, so beware
For every misdeed leads to doom

35. Or did you consider yourself above wrongdoing?
Then in that regard, be above or equal to me

36. Both indicate generosity and wisdom
For in them you have pillars and ancestors

37. And I advise you O man take my advice
Do not be like preachers to the obstinate

38. While you are the ever-living, the all preserver
So let the barren sand dunes be forgetful

39. Pardon my neglect and deception of you
And do not pardon my deceit and duplicity

40. We met while we were affectionate
So let us not part while we are resentful

41. For I am not one who is biased by whims
Nor am I one who is alarmed by coughing fits

42. You have treated people with fairness, righteousness
Bestowal, so they are like your children

43. Except me, for I was treated with loss
Without crime, yet you admired my endurance

44. Though I oppose those you oppose
And ally those you ally

45. Yes, my sin which I will not repent
Even if my words exhausted of justification

46. My tongue praises you while wet
And a heart praises you with justification

47. Reconsider, Abu Hassan, I see
You have misjudged my matter and state

48. By God, matters you see
Will never equal my worthiness, not ever

49. When I visit, I see in you no disintegration
As when I am absent, you do not care

50. And avoidance may come from intimacy
As association may come from boredom

51. Nor have I frequented to warrant an apologizer's excuse
Nor have I avoided to warrant a questioner's excuse

52. So why is the aloofness of an avoider
And why is the visit of a frequenter?

53. You have irritated me with injustice until
I have made my astonishment my main concern

54. While you have satisfied groups of people
Whose cheeks are lower than my slippers

55. You refused to separate me from hostility
Without seeing my separation

56. I have been belittled and they were favored
As if I am loved for their perfection and they for my faults

57. Despite my pursuit of some of my right
And the easiest of what diminishes my imbalance

58. I see if I were to shun you one day
My isolation would sadden you, Abu Hassan

59. So how about if I travelled to lands
Whose distance from you, you cannot endure my travels?

60. Is it not from adversities to see me
Loving you while my depart has been determined?

61. No, our mutual longing when it reveals its beauty
Were sufficient, whether you choose intimacy or avoidance

62. Even if I were to trade the whole world
I would hold onto you and divert from alternatives

63. And no passion from before our meeting makes me unjust
A passion that preoccupied my perception and pretense

64. Nor has an opinion that loved you after awareness
Seen the virtue of conviction over doubt

65. And how often have you woken up praising it
Then it has disputed types of disputes on your behalf

66. The easiest argument for the opinion is what
Has fully assembled within you, prevailing over my imbalance

67. And one like you, Abu Hassan, it is right
To spare me your separation and captivity

68. Out of gratitude for my love before the meeting
And appreciation of my affection after our exchange

69. May God protect you from an enemy of mine
Who sees me in a despicable state of disgrace

70. So he widens your commendable perception with dispraise
And criticizes your preference without deviation

71. Suppose I have lacked virtue greatly
Except my knowledge of your merit among men

72. Is that not enough in your view to forgive me
For what falls short besides that from my defects?

73. My sufficiency, O Abu Hassan, is insignificant
And my gratitude heavy of burdens

74. How many simple seeds
Have heavy crops like mountain boulders

75. I am the drawn sword amongst the enemies
Abu Hassan so do not neglect my sharpening

76. Would you accept deputizing me a sword
While I have a disposition and my eyelids have changed?

77. God forbid you accept this
And you are where you are from the utmost

78. So renew my sharpening for me and ready my eyelids
So that one day when you dress me in beauty

79. And protect me one day when you entrust me
For protecting me pleases you one war day you task me

80. Did you not know, may God guide you, that I am
More resolute on the adversary and assailant?

81. When I ascertain, I do not recoil from my right
And if I contend, my dispute is not feared

82. Slow down, I am clothing you newly
With a poem not repeating my expressions

83. Whose hearings rival one another
And its reciters fold over pretending

84. A praise, if you declare it praise
Of the garments of elaborate beauty

85. And if you wrong it, you make it dispraise
More severe on the noble than arrows

86. And I have no expression regarding you, however
What people say of words and speech

87. They see praises that were paid with injustice
Thus their tongues sharper than blades

88. And how many supporters I did not desire
Dispute my unjust oppressor infeasibly

89. The allies of the weak, foremost assembling
To support and fight for them

90. And how much poetry have I praised oppressors with
Thus becoming its dispraise unintended by me

91. Had I willed I would have stayed silent
Openly, and secretly contrived their ruin

92. But the deserving has a supporter against days
And alternating fate

93. And people's dispraise is easily obtained
For the simplest cause while gratitude is valuable

94. And the well-mannered are always supported
With loyalists from every group

95. So do not direct towards you the tongues of gatherings
Gathering after gathering with celebration

96. I stay awake while you do not endure
My exercise of poetry and improvisation

97. And I steady my stirrups while you do not heed
My shoes whatever their condition or slippers

98. I will supplicate God imploring Him
Among the supplicators insistently

99. Even if my tongue does not openly implore
My intention supplicates to you imploringly

100. Does not the majesty of truth regard a freeman
Even if the radiance of his splendor is intense?
