1. O Abu Ishaq, do not be angry, so I may be pleased
With your pardon, without hope of reward

2. I implore you not to say to the hopeful one:
“I was content with the booty with just the return”

3. The worst opinion about the son of my father and mother
Is my share of your generous gifts

4. Yet the youth committed no sin against you
Nor transgressed the ways of right

5. Give him from you a listening ear and understanding
That will shed light on his excuse like a flaming meteor

6. And grant him as gifts the sins of the people absolved
Was he not protected from punishment, veiled?

7. You decided he deserves punishment—
Was he not safe from your reproach and penalty?

8. Will you be satisfied if the howl of a complainer
Shakes the firmness of your patience, so lofty?

9. Excuse my brother and the soul so close to me
So spare me, since you blamed him, of fang

10. I am astonished at him and me, that we hoped
For a heaven from you, with pouring clouds

11. But you denied what we hoped for, and poured down
Upon us from you the thunderbolt of torment

12. Yet still we hope for a return from you
With your grace, and forebearance of reproach

13. You have no course but this, for I and you
Are in a position of authority and justice
