1. The eloquence of Ibn Faras
Is like his body, from thinness
١. بلاغة ابن فراسٍ
كجسمه من رُهُوصِ
2. He errs now and then
You find him stealing from thieves
٢. يُسيءُ طوراً وطوراً
تلقاه لصّ اللصوصِ
3. Not wrongly stealing
Nor rightly picking locks
٣. لا مُخطئاً سرقاتٍ
ولا مُصيب فُصوص
4. I was told he has women
Who are exclusive to him
٤. نُبِّئتُ أن نساءً
له ذوات خُصوص
5. Who hunt the prey of youth
Bravely with brazenness
٥. يُصطَدْنَ صيد الشبابي
طِ جَهرةً بالشُّصوص
6. He starved them so they devised
A trick to gain solitude
٦. أجاعَهُنَّ فأعْمل
ن حيلةً في الخلوص
7. Until when she was tired
Each rode a small donkey
٧. حتى إذا هي أعيتْ
ركبنَ كل قَمُوص
8. How many a languid eyelid
And smooth legged lass
٨. كم ذاتِ طرفٍ ربوخٍ
وذاتِ ساق رقوص
9. Each girl would pick from him
The pick of suitors
٩. تُنَصُّ كلُّ فتاةٍ
مِنهن نصّ القَلُوص
10. She is satisfied with food in a
House of excess and loss
١٠. تُناك بالقوتِ في بي
ت زائدٍ منقوص
11. An excess of horns
On a head closely shaven
١١. زيادة من قرونٍ
على عَضُوضٍ مصوص
12. To a contractor accustomed
To her as his own
١٢. إلى مناقصَ مُستأ
ثرٍ بها مخصوص
13. And I have not interpreted any
Insult in him except the stated
١٣. وما تأوّلتُ شتْماً
فيه سوى المنصوص
14. Nor have I recounted any story
About him unless abbreviated
١٤. ولا اقتصصْتُ حديثاً
عنه خلا مقصوص
15. The mind a tenth of a mind
And the person like a puppet
١٥. العقلُ مِعشار عقل
والشخص مثل شُخوص
16. Why so stingy, wiping rod
Of the obstinate donkey
١٦. ما بالُ بخلك يا مِس
حلَ الحمارِ النَّحُوص
17. Your mind was not built
Like your well-formed body
١٧. لم يُبْنَ عقلك بنيا
نَ جِسمك المرصوص
