1. If you were yearning in its peak
Or a temple whose head is rich with people

2. Or if you were like Ibn Sarij in his antiquity
Or al-Ghurayz, in whom lessons culminate

3. Would you be delighted except by one who resembles you?
Even if the voice of tambourine and strings assist you

4. Dogs have singers and ones who delight them
In their voices lives waste, so prepare against waste

5. And if the firewood seller sings you extempore
Say "you have chosen" and get up from the delayed ruins

6. If there was an inferno and people in hellfire
Its listener would die from intense grief

7. If he comes boasting of al-Abbas his father
Say "I have boasted of a bereaved senior man"
