1. Oh! Don't my soul forget the warbling of the bulbuls
With the yellow wine from Babylon,

2. For life is but in the remorse of a drinking companion,
Repented by the youth but not statues.

3. Time smiled, revealing its luscious color,
Leaving of its color only traces in the locks.

4. It came and went like a mirage,
Raising from the body the diminishing spirit.

5. It shone as the sun glowed over meadows,
Until it took the color of the rising sun.

6. When it walked on the bones of Ibn Kabirah,
Its limbs became soft and its joints flexible.

7. To it returns the branch of youth after fading,
Moist as the swaying branch of the acacia.

8. When it descends into the abode of its family,
It complains the complaint of a wronged and descending king.

9. With water that the hot iron bubbles slid off its blade
With a tail like the wagging of foxes.

10. When its breaths blow through its chest,
The bare midriff sways with curly hair.

11. It settled its dwellings between the arms of a meadow
Where the gazes of fat sheep graze

12. With a fragrance of musk from the zephyr
That blew over it the scent of beautiful maidens.

13. When the sleep visits it in the courtyard it charms
The faces of boon companions with lightning smiles.

14. As if they are two rods of melted alloy
Decorated with pearls and dangling fringes.

15. I drank in the prime of old age though long I had not
Drunk in the intoxication of playful youth.

16. I excuse the cupbearer of the wine for my diminished drinking
Due to the prolonged days of my advancing years.

17. And for the cup to be another pretext,
For one grayed to forget the departing days of youth.

18. When I reminisce about youth, I let it
Flow copious tears from the eye's clouds.

19. I lead the conversation's amusement with cups
And summon the boon companions among the locks.

20. With it I seek the ladder of worries and sometimes
With it I seek to trail the lengthening trains.

21. And I relate to my boon companions tales of days gone by,
Tales that my cooing voice narrates.

22. My friend scolded me in my tipsiness so I implored her
“For your sake, I am no debtor to the scolder.”

23. If the companion allowed, I would allow
For gray hair like the encompassing darkness.

24. She said “Leave the youth and the cup, it is a fever
After passing forty perfect years.”

25. Doesn’t it suffice her that gray hair deprived me
Of my share of the union with the missing beauties?

26. Until by blaming she cared not for my feelings
To forbid me the sweetness of the overflowing cups.

27. So the denial of a share like it interceded for me,
Having distracted her from blaming the busy one.

28. Shall I abandon the cup’s pardon, burning with thirst
Hoping for the mouth’s spray from the withholding gazelle?

29. Free of worries in the shade of a nearby garden
That its planter placed near at hand.

30. Going and coming in orchards, doubling
His fortunate share with coveted means.

31. The bed of youth stretches with him so the gazelles
Graze to his sides like the freely roaming deer.

32. Watered by mouths as though their sipping
Was the harvest of bees dripping from the squeezing grasp.

33. For that the sober one, I have a cooler excuse
And more deserving that it be glorified by those springs.

34. It is for you, for our play and its matter
And the family of Zureiq are for sublime things.

35. Don’t you know we have fulfilled our affairs
So they have not approached the first of matters?

36. They neglected us in the rain of their help
In vain, while we were content with spears and arrows.

37. So the relationship of people became like that of subjects
And their flock in life is the flock of burdened camels.

38. And they burdened us with favor upon favor
As though we are the lightest in burden bearing.

39. I will elegize your favors, O family of Mus'ab
An elegy of the meadow’s rainfall from the pouring clouds.

40. And the meadow’s breath does not praise life
With anything sweeter than the mention of you in gatherings.

41. Your swords in the land are the springs of its water
And your feet in it are like mountains firm.

42. I say knowing, not encompassing your merit,
Nor speaking nonsense in ignorance.

43. If I wished I could run meters in your praise
Extending them though I would not increase the false.

44. And speech cannot end in you, not for an aim’s end,
But the end of one speaking, no end of the speaker.

45. Oh you who flow, realize their stature
For protection of God you climb a worker.

46. When speech made speakers reach its end,
Then how can it be for the non-speaker!

47. So stop in humility for it is surely
Seeking the unobtainable from twisting efforts.

48. I turn away from vulgarity and blaming in praise
Prolonged opposition in the strife of scolders.

49. He is generous giving his wealth in its rights
On a path between the two paths, just.

50. And no escape from his start, his comfort
Lowers domination from the backs of the saddled.

51. Unique and unmatched in munificence, intimate
In his solitude, monopolizing all merits.

52. He distributes gifts and tribulations to their people,
Lowering the train of his banner, honored like bridesmaids.

53. When war disheveled him he met its spear
With his spear, burns meeting the deepest depths.

54. And it shook out its leg, though it still
Runs with a tail of spreading benefit.

55. The heroes shouted, “You have spoken true to the oracle,
We witness you have fulfilled the good promise.”

56. If critics fault him he was the first critic
And if challengers duel him he was the first challenger.

57. The arrival of feet with the sword and the sword with feet,
When the thrust sparks with the low grounds.

58. With a courageous and decisive heart escorting him,
Polished longtime in dealing with whetstones.

59. It deflects the lights of death from his surfaces,
While in its sharpness is the truth of those glories.

60. If it makes peace, the warrior is like flames,
And if it makes war, the flames are like the warrior.

61. Its day of hardship, its shade is like its sun,
No, the sun is weaker than the shadows of unsheathed swords.

62. Under it men exchange the bitterness of blows,
What an amazing sight two enemies exchanging!

63. Until theaters of death come between them
Beating a cracked leather with joints.

64. He judged between his two groups though many distresses,
He relieved between its multitudes with one of the solutions.

65. Oh how the mother of enemies despaired,
And where is the man who hates him but the son of desperation?

66. War did not rush his command
When the fated is rushed by the circling fate.

67. Nor did the patience’s length miss him an occasion,
When the matter of the inactive procrastinator is wasted.

68. So think not his hastening of enemies wrath,
But think his hastening graciousness to the questioner.

69. He is the man whose promised victory is hastened,
As you have known, and the threat is procrastinated.

70. Leave the war to perfect its tools for them,
And hasten it not to bite with closed teeth.

71. For the son of Abdullah is not sleeping from them
Nor is Allah heedless of what they do.

72. Beasts he herded around a thicket,
In which Usamah glowered with armored coats.

73. He gathered his army then guarded them
With the disliked abruptness of a valiant hero.

74. He did not cease to display patience and his plot,
Lying in ambush by every path with calamities.

75. Had he counted them an adequate host for his might,
Then what came to them of the forms of warriors would not have come.

76. But he is like a lion singling out his prey,
And stepping forward to the peers without withdrawal.

77. He only descended into the plains as a careful watcher,
Hiding during the laying of nets.

78. I saw them reckless of his affair,
And the Lord of Glory plays in matters as He wills.

79. So delusions from him made them arrogant until
Their warriors became the targets of killing fates.

80. Had they heard the threats of truth,
They would have been saved from it the salvation of hopes.

81. The quarters are subject to you in precision and wisdom,
So the earth to you became like a docile camel.

82. If you wished oversight and power over it
You would grasp its edges with your fingers.

83. To you belongs the merit, not to another deficient one,
But to another meritorious one.
