1. Bear the tie you offered to her sisters,
Or release it to burden her sisters,

2. And do not think me satisfied with her
Whom a group of mothers were angry with before me,

3. And I did not despise what was from you, though
It is much when men count their ties,

4. But it is trivial in your generosity’s side,
And in a free man’s eye, its passions are remote,

5. Do you give the distractions of life to others besides me
And restrict me to the least of its daughters?

6. A soul refusing humiliation has refused for me
To accept abasement and sell the honor of its life for the disgrace of death
