1. I drank when youth made drinking lawful
Of wine the Scripture does not forbid

2. But now that age and Scripture both condemn
For you forbidden twice if Muslim you profess

3. Yet after double bans, the cup invites
Whoso on wine its stains impressed

4. Before religions ruled, the aged warned
Against the stains of wine’s excess

5. Before faith triumphed, elders banned
The noble from the drunkard’s excesses

6. Leave off this drinking, now your hair shines white
Lest your heart lose its light

7. Let not your silvered locks and scripture’s might
And Islam make you censure’s victim
