1. O my brother, where is the fragrance of that meeting?
Where is what was between us of serenity?

2. Where is the fulfillment of the witness who used to relate
That you are the loyal, the right, the brotherly?

3. I have not seen your deeds except the opposite
Of what the witness testified to wisely

4. Your indifference revealed your true nature to me
Which was covered for a while by the facade of conviviality

5. You left me though I did not hold ill thoughts
That I would think ill of good friends

6. When ugliness appeared to my eyes, I said
Perhaps a homely woman hides in her tent a beauty

7. I wish I had not uncovered your veil
And remained under that cover

8. They said, had we not been revealed
The darkness of suspicion, grim and intense, would not have lifted from you

9. I said, I am amazed at you
Revealers of the obscure darknesses

10. You have shown me along with experience, the companion
That the unveiler of the veiled is illuminated

11. I said, in this lies your death, and death
Is not cherished by the living

12. They said, death is not hated if it is right
So do not persist in contention

13. O my brother, you have not granted me
A share of your generosity like other misers

14. Was there no nice response from you
Wherein the soul finds rest from toil?

15. The friend's duty is to provide support
Until he remains like the irrigated greenery

16. Abandoning his efforts, relying
On your efforts without other helpers or intercessors

17. Like one deluded by a mirage with what it conjured
Until he spills what is in his waterskin

18. O Abu al-Qasim, whom I hoped
Would fulfill my needs, you have severed the rope of hope

19. The needs of one who counts you
At times of hardship and at times of ease

20. You slept, excused after prolonged evasion
Not fitting for one aware and watching

21. By God, had I asked for help from another companion
You would have displayed hostility along with the enemies

22. I will not repay your arrogance to me with arrogance
And be afflicted with the evil of retaliation

23. Rather, I see your words as true
And this stinginess is not out of miserliness

24. You are my eyes, and it is not my eyes' right
To squeeze them shut from the irritants

25. What you have done is not what allows
A young man glory and praise among the people

26. Nor what earns good repute and commendation
He who assumed the position you assumed

27. Of generosity and loyalty
Who made promises freely to intimates

28. Then, after that, refused to give
So he became like contradictions: leaves unfold

29. To the eye yet he refuses to bear fruit out of total refusal
A friend is not pleased with mere greetings from you

30. While rancor lies dormant underneath
O my brother, my brother of wit, intelligence, refinement and wisdom

31. Can a hidden strike after fifty strikes in the battle have an effect?
Penetrating of perception, focused of thought, without languor or delay

32. A group of followers gather around a broken-down vehicle
To defeat the army single-handedly and twist

33. The mighty warriors severely
And lower the eminent after the outstanding

34. Thus increasing the strength of ascent
Sometimes it baffles and confuses my mind

35. How you defeat the frivolous with might
And they accept from you half and a quarter

36. While the least of your gain from waging is doubling
And the cunning take precautions against you

37. And are careful with the strong and the weak
Of your subtle, elusive schemes

38. More hidden than the dust particles in the air
Rather, than the secret in the heart of an affectionate lover

39. Whom the punishment of divulging has disciplined
So the war you direct against the people

40. Circles the meadows of tranquility
And I think your preying upon the enemy regiment

41. Are deaths close to being covered in shrouds
And I see that the square of red leather

42. Is a land you have sullied with blood
The people are wrong, you do not play chess

43. Rather, with the souls of the players
You are serious, while others who play

44. Are not men, they are women
You have a deceit that creeps into the people

45. More hidden than the creeping of food into the limbs
Or the creeping of boredom into the brains

46. To the extent of loathing
Or the progression of fate in the darkness of the unseen

47. To whom it wants with twisting
Or the flow of white hairs under the night of youth

48. Perplexed in a swarthy blackness
It crept into it and from it into it

49. So it took on the color of the faded raven
You kill the king wherever you want on the square

50. Openly, with the vilest of kills
Not looking with your own eyes at the board

51. Or paying attention to the moves
Rather, you see it with your back turned

52. With a heart depicted with brilliance
You read the hand openly yet perform

53. The whole thing like the most memorized of reciters
And you intuit the truth in other than that

54. When the opinions of the arbitrary go astray
So you see that eloquence, which gives comfort

55. Is better than wealth and misery
A vision without delusion, and were it not for that

56. You would not tolerate the company of the immoral
He is Moses, and the sword and the army, and the pillar

57. Of the conquering authority
You abandoned him and bought a comfortable life

58. The seller profits, wise in buying and selling
And long ago, you were disgusted with every

59. Affluent and ruling companion
And you refused profitable grand trade

60. And what lies in its harbors of usefulness
The blamers blathered nonsense about profit

61. So you ignored them and prolonged raving
Your resolute determination turned away

62. With a hearing ear yet deaf
When you did not care about the words of my misguided brother

63. Who appears to be of the advisers
And when the opinion of the wise one is right

64. You do not look with the eyes of corrupt consultation
You do not follow the pleasure of a livelihood with superfluousness

65. When underneath is the vileness of a turbid livelihood
Fatigue of the soul, humiliation, and baseness

66. Fear and discarding of shame
Rather, you obeyed the prohibition, so you won a share

67. That the shrewdness of the ignorant fell short of
Ease of the soul, integrity, chastity, and security

68. In the life of a secluded meadow
Knowing what you took and gave

69. Wise in taking and giving
The penetrating mind, nothing escapes you

70. The like of which escaped the sights of the seeing
Not alighting from the brilliant, pure water

71. To the false, muddled, mirage-like water
Saying to the adviser to toil, wait

72. The effort of the intelligent comes after contentment
Desire brings a ship to the wretched

73. For desire is the ship of the miserable
Welcome to subsistence, it comes wholesomely

74. With the train of transcendence trailing it
Astray is one who busies himself in gathering

75. For a life busy with extinction
Working to amass fortunes for the heir

76. While life is steadily vanishing
How excellent it would be if a lot of money

77. Were treasure of permanence for the treasure's Lord
One who is heedless pities another heedless

78. Ignorant that he is of the captives
To God the bewildered lost one goes

79. Not in ignorance, and not to felicity
He assumes fortune all in his hands

80. While in its entirety he spans but a short time
That disappointed one is wretched even if

81. He appears to be of the happy
The sustenance and wisdom of one with understanding

82. Whose eyes peer without immersion, suffice
Health of religion, organs, honor

83. And earning the intimacy of the beloved
That is better for one who knows good

84. Than what people gather of extravagance
And it has partisans of pedigree

85. Yet they are not followers of passions
The one busied with distress has no life

86. Rather, the life of one living in comfort
O Abu al-Qasim, from whom no subtle scheme

87. In a rugged valley escapes
Do you see all I have mentioned clearly

88. And the rest of its obscure valleys?
Yet it is hidden from you that I am a friend

89. Whose like is seldom valued highly
No, by the life of God, but you pretended insightfully

90. In a bright night with a shining moon
Rather, you intentionally ignored the truth

91. Wronging me along with time
Which robbed the honorable of their rights

92. For the vile
My need weighed heavily upon you so it became

93. A burden of tremendous burdens
And it has a light carrier, but

94. My share with you was beneath consideration
The extent of my sanctity to you

95. Was something of the most trivial of things
So you hesitated, and hesitation is

96. A disgrace to the back, though base is its collector
You were of those who show affection

97. But became bored when I needed procrastination
By my life, you made effort, but

98. You apologized after prolonged evasion
So be aloof from hypocrisy, your apology

99. In making effort is a type of hypocrisy
None benefits you in seeking needs

100. Except one of sincere faith and effort
You wronged my need so it took refuge

101. In your duty, and I consigned it to the determination of fate
And God's determination is more protective

102. Of people than mothers and fathers
Though certainty has fallen ill

103. An inward, deeply concealed illness
I have not found a man who believes he is certain

104. Except in him is a whiff of ostentation
If certainty were sound, the desirous one would only

105. Yearn for the King of the heavens
And reaching those lofty ranks

106. Of the prophets is tremendously difficult
I felt alienated, so you revealed stinginess

107. Increasing my alienation from the impure
It pains me that you resort to blame

108. But you have afflicted my chest with an affliction
You have medicated your friend's chest, so excuse him

109. For breathing, as it is like medicine
Do not blame the one who placed blame

110. For he has placed blame in the abode of the blameworthy
If a whiff from my distress has reached you

111. Then pardon what you ignited in the entrails
O Abu Bakr, the one referred to

112. When companions are severed among the refined
We have made you a judge, so judge with the truth

113. And you remain the judge of the judicious
You take the right for the rightful

114. And forbid riding animosity, people of animosity
No unjust or ignorant thing comes from you

115. Or from ignorance and foolishness
Do you think what your brother Abu al-Qasim

116. Did for my need is satisfactory?
I have rights over him that he has twisted

117. So demand them from him, about to be fulfilled
I do not consider I have a claim over him

118. Other than the pure friendship
That, or I am a brother, if he had called me

119. For a concern, I would have answered the summons foremost
A friend asks his friend what he spends

120. Of himself equally
And I call upon you for help, O Abu al-Qasim

121. I sacrifice you, my dear sacrifice
We have spent a pleasant time reproaching

122. It is good for peers to reproach
With reprimand and reproach, yet I

123. Am present to pardon and vast in clemency
And you have affection as you had

124. For your friend, and my chest is not spiteful
And you have pardon like my rhyme in you

125. Capacious, as it is like space
Reflect, for it is the meter of prose

126. Its duration is endless
And the one who loosened the tongue and reproached you

127. Count you as the first of the understanding
I did not conceal a mistake from you when I reproached you

128. Calling reproach vilification
I am the man who does not describe my reproach

129. Of a companion except the elite of the loyal
The one of wisdom, knowledge, patience and

130. Ignorance is blaming the ignorant
Censuring an ignorant one is a doctor

131. Administering treatment for an excruciating illness
I am not one who remains settled

132. Blaming in an empty, echoing abode
