أن يُرى النورُ في القضيب الرطيبِ

4. It saddened her to see a beloved of hers
Laughing bare-headed, devoid of white hair.

٤. ساءها أنْ رأتْ حبيباً إليها
ضاحكَ الرأسِ عن مفَارقَ شِيبِ

5. So she called him to dye his hair, saying

٥. فدَعَتْهُ إلى الخُضاب وقالت
إنَّ دفنَ المَعيبِ غيرُ معيبِ

يُونِقُ البِيضَ من سوادٍ جَليبِ

14. Between us there was no reckoner.
It robbed me of the blackness of my hair but

١٤. يا حليفَ الخضاب لا تخدع النف
س فما أنت للصِّبا بنسيبِ

15. Recompensed me with the down of every beard.
It recompensed me with Ali, glory to him,

١٥. ليس يجدي الخضابُ شيئاً من النفـ
ـع سوى أنه حِدادُ كئيبِ

16. A recompense in which is solace for the wary.
Generous among kings, cultivated,

١٦. فاتَّخذْهُ على الشباب حداداً
وابكِ فيه بعَبْرة ونَحيبِ

17. He has never ceased to shelter every cultivated man.
To him the indigent person complains of

١٧. وفتاةٍ رأت خضابي فقالت
عَزَّ دَاءُ المشيب طِبَّ الطبيبِ

18. A pledged thing to every hardship that responds.
Comforting to him when worries thicken,

١٨. خاضبُ الشيب في بياض مُبينٍ
حين يبدو وفي سوادٍ مريبِ

19. A solace that melts for the complainant.
He goes to meet those driven off from the doors

١٩. يالها من غَريرة ذاتِ عينٍ
غيرِ مغرورة بشيبٍ خَضيبِ

20. With good news from him and a welcome.
If the aspirants refused his call one day

٢٠. وحقيقٌ لعورة الشيب أن تبـ
ـدُوَ للغِرِّ غيرِ ذي التدريبِ

21. He would summon them to him by threat.
Many a scandal for Iblis’ party he foiled

٢١. لهفَ نفسي على القناع الذي مَحـ
ـحَ وأُعقِبْتُ منه شرَّ عَقيبِ

22. So it ended and there was no confusion in it.
The traps that were for the tyrants’ lions

٢٢. مَنَعَ العينَ أن تَقرَّ وقرَّت
عينُ واشٍ بنا وعينُ رقيبِ

23. Destroyed his family, like kindling.
The kings gave him the rank of guide,

بقوامٍ له ولينِ عسيبِ

24. Not erring in order.
An ordainer who set matters right

٢٤. نفَّر الحِلْمَ ثم ثنَّى فأمسى
خَبَّبَ العِرْسَ أيَّما تخبيبِ

25. So they returned, rectified by him, to rectitude.
He commissioned tribulations until they turned

٢٥. شَعَرٌ ميتٌ لذي وَطَرٍ حيـ
ـيٍ كنارِ الحريق ذات اللهيبِـ

26. To one who does not reproach the commissioner.
With him there is remedy from comment

٢٦. في قناعٍ من المشيبِ لَبيسٍ
ـورداءٍ من الشباب قشيبِ

27. For those afraid and the serious time.
His efforts have well described him until

٢٧. وأخو الشيب واللُّبانة في البِيـ
ـض بحالٍ كقَتْلة التغبيبِ

28. They silenced every poet and preacher.
But they emulated his emulation so they set about

٢٨. مَعهُ صبوةُ الفتى وعليه
صَرفة الشيخ فهْو في تعذيبِ

29. Relieving themselves of words, every strange meaning.

٢٩. يُطَّبَى للصِّبا فيُدْعى مجيباً
وهو يدعو وما لَه من مجيبِ

It was pleasant for the caravans when they stretched out to him

٣٤. خُرَّهِيٌّ من الملوك أديبٌ
لم يزل ملجأً لكل أديبِ

35. At dawn with compensation.
Their descent was not dearer to them

٣٥. يستغيثُ اللهيفُ منه بمدعوْ
وٍ لدى كل كَربةٍ مستجيبِ

36. Than the gentle breeze to him after dreariness.
Trusting that with him they would find pasture,

٣٦. أَرْيَحيٌّ له إذا جَمَدَ الكز
زُ بَنانٌ تذوبُ للمستذيبِ

37. A hitch for every straying camel.
O you who awe me and my poetry!

٣٧. يتلقَّى المُدفَّعينَ عن الأبـ
ـواب بالبشر منه والترحيبِ

38. I am not one who answers every awestruck one.
God raised my desire above your gifts, and what

٣٨. لو أبى الراغبون يوماً نداهُ
لدعاهُمْ إليه بالترهيبِ

39. Is the starling or the little finch to me?
He rewarded me through your glory,

٣٩. رُبَّ أُكرومةٍ له لم تَخَلْها
قبلَهُ في الطباع والتركيبِ

40. So I obediently responded with the first reward.
Protecting me from misfortunes with the generosity

٤٠. غَرَّبتهُ الخلائقُ الزُّهْرُ في النا
س وما أوحشتْهُ بالتغريبِ

41. Of Hatem and the valor of youth.
For me, in your glory, goals which were

٤١. يَهَبُ النائلَ الجزيلَ مُعيراً
طَرفَهُ الأرضَ ناكتاً بالقضيبِ

42. For the son of Imran in his staff of myrtle wood.
And if you pinched provision from me

٤٢. يتَّقي نظرة المُدلِّ بجدوا
هُ ويَعْتَدُّها من التثريبِ

43. I trained the member intensely.
The giver, the causer of my comfort, I have found

٤٣. بعد بشرٍ مُبَشِّرٍ سائليه
بأمان لهم من التخييبِ

44. Constant, not wearied by giving and enabling.
Clouds of glory contended with his glory

٤٤. حَبّبَتْ كفُّه السؤالَ إلى النا
س جميعاً وكان غير حبيبِ

45. My right hand forever giving rain.
I said, when he was generous before a truthful

٤٥. ما سعى والسعاةُ للمجد إلا
سبقَ المُحْضِرينَ بالتقريبِ

٤٩. حَكم اللَّهُ بالعلا لعَليٍّ
وبحق النجيب وابن النجيبِ

50. You watered me with a scroll of plenty?
But rather I see myself - no doubt - becoming

٥٠. فَلْيَمُتْ حاسدوه همّاً وغمّاً
ما لحُكْم الإله منْ تعقيبِ

51. At your hand one of ample fold.
By my father you are of glorious, prestigious origin

٥١. جِذْلُ سلطانِه المحكَّك في الخَطْـ
ـب وعَذْقُ الجُناة ذو الترجيبِ

52. Whose honor people seek, not fearing it.
You gained glory through munificence, and the house

٥٢. والنصيحُ الصريحُ نُصحاً إذا ما
جمعوا بين رائبٍ وحليبِ

53. By erecting pillars and daubing.
Who takes a name - your names are the names -

٥٣. والذي رأيُهُ لأسلحة الأب
طالِ مثلُ الصِّقال والتذريبِ

54. Takes the place of titles.
Of generous, glorious, noble,

٥٤. عنه تمضي ولو تعدّته أضحت
من كليلٍ مُفَلَّلٍ وخَشيبِ

55. Chieftain, master, and chief.
Shame on him who expects to reach you in glory! He who expects you

٥٥. مِدْرَهُ الدين والخلافة ذو النص
ح عن الحَوْزتين والتذبيبِ

56. Cannot attain you, with familiar honor.
You attained the farthest goals, with close

٥٦. فَلَّ بالحجة الخُصومَ وبالكي
د زُحوفَ العِدا ذوي التأليبِ

57. Honor you reached what is far.
Receive this eulogy with which the singers

٥٧. رُبَّ مَغنىً لحزب إبليسَ أخلا
هُ فأمسى وما به مِنْ عَريبِ

58. Delight, though the anchors weighed.
Thought strung its pearls unpierced

٥٨. دَمَّرتْ أهلَهُ مكائدُ كانت
لأسودِ الطغاةِ كالتقشيبِـ

59. Since a pearl is blemished by piercing.
Only rhymes preoccupied it

٥٩. ـرتّبتهُ الملوكُ مرتبةَ المِدْ
رَهِ لا مُخطئين في الترتيبِ

60. From praising you, busied with riddles.
And for your aspirant, before it, words

٦٠. قَيِّمٌ قوَّمَ الأمورَ فعادتْ
قيِّماتٍ به من التحنيبِ

61. Refined in you, intensely refined.
It captivates the listeners - the easiest of what is in it -

٦١. واستناب الخطوب حتى أنابت
ربَّما لا تُنيبُ للمستنيبِ

62. Even if recited without modulation.
It blackened in you every whiteness,

٦٢. عندَهُ للثَّأَي طِبابٌ من التد
بير يَعْيا به ذوو التطبيبِ

63. Minds see it as gilding.
If its eloquence rivaled Persia one day

٦٣. لَوْذعيٌّ له فؤادٌ ذكيٌّ
ماله في ذكائه من ضَريبِ

64. It would Arabize the Persians, intensely.
It is of what your excellent upbringing added

٦٤. يَقظٌ في الهَناتِ ذو حركات
لسكون القلوب ذاتِ الوجيبِ

65. Alas! What excellent upbringing!
How much reward you confirmed on me for it!

٦٥. ألمَعِيٌّ يرى بأولِ ظنٍّ
آخرَ الأمر من وراء المغيبِ

66. You were worthier of it than the reward-seeker.
Bestowing two boons: useful education,

٦٦. لا يُرَوِّي لا يُقَلِّبُ كفّاً
وأكُفُّ الرجالِ في تقليبِ

67. Beneficial discipline, and boonish reward.
From you it came to you, called by affection

٦٧. يُدرِكُ الطِّلْبَ بالبديهة دون ال
عَقْبِ قبل التصعيد والتصويبِ

68. Without calling for affection.

٦٨. حازمُ الرأي ليس عن طول تجريـ
ـبٍ لبيبٌ وليس عن تلبيبِ

٦٩. وأريبٌ فإنْ مُريغو نَداه
خادَعُوه رأيتَ غيرَ أريبِ

٧٠. يتغابَى لهم وليس لمُوقٍ
بل لِلُبٍّ يفوقُ لبَّ اللبيبِ

٧١. ثابتُ الحالِ في الزلازل مُنْها
لٌ لسُؤّالهِ انهيالَ الكثيبِ

٧٢. ليِّنٌ عِطفُه فإنْ رِيمَ منه
مَكْسرَ العود كان جِدَّ صليبِ

٧٣. مَفْزعٌ للرُّعاةِ مرعىً خصيبٌ
لرعاياهُمُ وفوق الخصيبِ

٧٤. في حِجاهُ وفي نداهُ أمانَا
نِ من الخوف والزمانِ الجديبِ

٧٥. أحسنتْ وصفَهُ مساعيهِ حتى
أفحمتْ كلَّ شاعرٍ وخطيبِ

٧٦. بل حَذَوا حَذْوَها فراحوا يريحو
ن من القولِ كلَّ معنى غريبِ

٧٧. قد بلونا خلاله فَحمِدْنا
غَيْبَها حمدَ ذائقٍ مُستطيبِ

٨٠. يَمَّمَتْه بنا المطايا فأفْضَتْ
من فضاءٍ إلى فضاءٍ رحيبِ

٨١. خُلُقٌ منه واسعٌ وفِناءٌ
لم يَرُعْها به هديرُ كليبِ

٨٢. طاب لليَعْملاتِ إذ يَمَّمتْهُ
وصْلُهُنَّ البكورَ بالتأويبِ

٨٣. لم يكن خَفْضُها أحبَّ إليها
من رسيم إليه بعد خبيبِ

٨٤. ثِقةً أنَّهُنَّ يلقينَ مرعىً
فيه نَيٌّ لكل نِضْوٍ شَزيبِ

٨٥. أيُّهذا المُهيبُ بي وبشعري
لستُ ممن يُجيب كلَّ مُهيبِ

٨٦. رفعَ اللّه رغبتي عن عطايا
كَ وما لِلعُقاب والعندليبِ

٨٧. ثَوَّبَتْ بي إلى عليٍّ معالي
هِ فلبَّيتُ أوّل التثويبِ

٨٨. مَاجِدٌ حاربَ الحوادثَ دوني
بنَدى حاتمٍ وبأسِ شَبيبِ

٨٩. ليَ في جاههِ مآربُ كانت
لابنِ عمرانَ في عصاهُ الشعيبِ

٩٠. وإذا حزَّ لي منَ المال عُضْواً
أرَّب العضوَ أيَّما تأريبِ

٩١. أصبح الباذلَ المسبِّبَ لا زا
ل مَليَّاً بالبذلِ والتسبيبِ

٩٢. ساجلَتْ جاهَهُ سحائبُ عُرفٍ
من يَمينَيْهِ دائماتُ الصَّبيبِ

٩٣. قلت إذ جاد باللُّهى قبل سَعي
صادقٍ منه غيرِ ذي تكذيبِ

٩٤. يا رِشاءً تَخْضَلُّ منه يد الما
تحِ قبل انغماسِهِ في القليبِ

٩٥. بَضَّ لي من نداكَ قبل استقائي
بكَ ريِّي وفَضْلَةٌ للشريبِ

٩٦. ذاك شيءٌ من الرِّشاءِ غريبٌ
يا ابنَ يحيى ومنك غيرُ غريبِ

٩٧. ما أُراني إذا خبطتُ بدَلْوي
جُمَّةَ الماءِ بالقليل النصيبِ

٩٨. لا لَعَمْري وكيف ذاك وقبل الـ
ـمتْحِ روَّيْتَني بسَجْلٍ رغيبِ

٩٩. بل أُراني هناك لا شك أغدو
ويَدي منكَ ذاتُ بطنٍ عشيبِ

١٠٠. بأبي أنتَ من جليلٍ مَهيبٍ
مَطْلِبُ العُرْفِ منه غيرُ مهيبِ

١٠١. طنَّبَ المجدَ بالمكارم والبيـ
ـت بنصبِ العماد والتطنيبِ

١٠٢. من يُلَقَّبْ فإن أسماءك الأس
ماءُ يشغلنَ موضعَ التلقيبِ

١٠٣. من جوادٍ وماجدٍ وكريمٍ
وزعيمٍ وسيِّدٍ ونقيبِ

١٠٤. تَبَّ من يرتجي لَحَاقك في المجـ
ـدِ وما مرتجيكَ في تتبيبِ

١٠٥. أعجز الطالبيكَ شأوٌ بعيدٌ
لكَ أدركْتَهُ بعُرفٍ قريبِ

١٠٦. هاكها مِدحةً يُغنِّي بها الرُّكْ
بانُ ما أرزمَتْ روائمُ نيبِ

١٠٧. نَظمَ الفكرُ دُرهَّا غير مثقو
بٍ إذا الدُّر شِينَ بالتشعيبِ

١٠٨. لم يَعِبْها سوى قوافٍ تشاغل
نَ عن المدح فيك بالتشبيبِ

١٠٩. ولراجيكَ قبلها كلماتٌ
هُذِّبتْ فيك أَيَّما تهذيبِ

١١٠. يُطرِبُ السامعينَ أيسرُ ما في
ها وإن أنشدت بلا تطريبِ

١١١. سَوَّدتْ فيك كلَّ بيضاء تسوي
داً تراه العقولُ كالتذهيبِ

١١٢. لو يُناغِي بَيانُها العُجْمَ يوماً
عرَّبَ العُجمَ أيَّما تعريبِ

١١٣. وهْي مما أفاد تأديبُك الفا
ضلُ واهاً لذاك من تأديبِ

١١٤. كم ثواب أَثَبْتَنيه عليها
كنتَ أولى به من المستثيبِ

١١٥. مُنعِماً نُعْمَيَيْنِ نُعمى مفيدٍ
أدباً نافعاً ونُعمى مثيبِ

١١٦. منك جاءت إليك يحدو بها الود
دُ على رغبةٍ بلا ترغيبِ
