1. News reached me, O Abu al-Abbas, of an event
In which you were afflicted by one who was once a friend of yours,

2. Had you but shared your food, you'd not have suffered harm,
But you did not spare the voracious eaters their fill.

3. So away with him for whom you scrimped,
You ate stale food alone and greedily crammed yourself.

4. Thus does God take vengeance on every tyrant—
You wronged a friend and were afflicted with one who avenged him.

5. I witnessed it the day your arrogance was requited
With blows by one disdaining humiliation who took revenge.

6. May God forgive your sins toward me and toward her,
Though they were shameful transgressions and acts of betrayal.

7. If anyone after this wrongs or acts basely toward the noble lady,
In word or deed with shameful impropriety, I shall chastise him unsparingly.
