1. Overlook the neighbor who backbites,
And pray for the tried one, so noble and patient.

2. O Abul ‘Abdillah, O hope of the hopeful!
For the elevated ones, O Hussein son of Hassan!

3. Inheritor of succor from the Lord of aid,
Allah is worshipped through it, not idols profaned.

4. From the Commander of the Faithful, Al-Murtada,
Truly to the Book of Allah adhering, and to the Sunnah.

5. Al-Murtada entrusted to him Al-Mustafa’s will,
A trustee who never betrayed what was trusted.

6. To you from his legacy aid comes,
And piety, guidance in tribulations.

7. An aid found through you but not besides,
Obstacle to harm and attainment of hopes.

8. None but you have my affection and love,
None but you have my thanks and remove my worries.

9. Since I was committed to your patronage,
I care not for the enmity of time.

10. You are life itself when life is most bare,
My home when the desert is void and vacant.

11. Each day to you is a seeker at hand,
By which, for me, you have thanks waiting.

12. Paltry is all thanks to your good deed,
So excellent is the good you grant and concede.

13. Conceal not what you have allowed me,
For what you made secret is now open and free.

14. If we weighed against what you have given us
Mankind's thanks would be light, not even or just.

15. For your nobility my thanks cannot suffice,
Too lofty a summit for any to rise.

16. How can one not grant what you have granted,
The glorious burdens of honour buoyant.

17. Your father’s brother was brother to the Oracle,
A cousin, trustee, and wed by marriage.

18. O cousins of the Prophet Mustafa!
Loving you wards off doubts however far.

19. Birth and faith together flourished,
Loyal to you even if chaos rummaged.

20. For God on us is blessing,
Loving you – for those favours – thanksgiving.

21. You who guidance never made gain,
But people's love for you its recompense and gain.

22. And deserving you are of that stature,
O guides of mankind, pillars of law and scripture.

23. O refuge of mankind when disorder peaks,
When crisis pounds and havoc wreaks.

24. If we beseech and in your name beseech,
You are unlike relics time does bleach.

25. Nay, but God, through you, cured our blindness,
Through you assuaged our distress and hopelessness.

26. Knowledge and guidance are found with you,
In every era, tied together with virtue.

27. In every plight, deliverance lies with you,
Each sigh succeeded by ease anew.

28. Praise flocked to you and settled therein,
To thrive, augment, and husband.

29. Many of your scions in their age,
Were clothed by God in raiment's finest gauge,

30. Persuasive yet honoring in manner poised,
Straitened in creed but generous and large.

31. Of insightful mind and wisdom enjoyed,
Graceful, modest, refined and cultured.

32. A piercing scrutiny if roused,
Yet gentleness if tranquility caroused.

33. As al-Hussein’s matchless merits,
Though with envy the jealous spirits.

34. If time makes you of enemies throng,
They lie in wait, sinister and wrong.

35. They stripped the garb of sanctity,
And lurched between transgression and enmity.

36. So be patient – them will God destroy for you,
As He destroyed the tyrants of al-Yemen anew,

37. Azd then Riyah then Azd again,
And the lords of Qahtan in their kingdom lain.

38. What lessons in peoples passed away,
When bestowed upon them scripture’s decay.

39. Victory is near, do not despair,
Near indeed, not just hopeful care.

40. To guard my honor hinders me not,
Having to the life of this world bent.

41. Neither blood in defending you spilt,
Nor honor for your sake made guilty or silt.

42. But my soul I sacrificed though,
God spared my blood as I prayed it be so.

43. Would that I were a shield before you,
Or armor to guard you or havens rescue.

44. With my forehead, chest, and neck meet
The arrows and spears your enemies fleet.

45. For he who buys favor through you,
Need not fear loss or ruin anew.

46. I said to those chiding my ardent love:
This love is the cage of my spirit, my nesting dove.

47. So leave me be, hapless and confounded,
My longing for them, though mankind astounded.

48. And rid me of your rebuke and disdain,
For my hearing has had its fill of pain.

49. God is witness, and pure devotion bears,
My faith in openness and secrecy pairs.

50. With true loyalty I tread the course
Of spirit in body, its necessary force.

51. And this is my raiment while alive,
Just as in death it shall be my shroud revive.

52. My poverty and love of you are riches to me,
My gauntness, with loving you, taste like honey.

53. The keenest insights perceive truths from afar
When eyes of the wise begin to debar.

54. I was shown your virtues before those of my sire,
And suckled on your righteousness before milk entire.

55. If estranged from you, it would be meet,
That your hands, not mine, reproach and beat.

56. For you are you, none but you,
Not abandoning me, my love always true.

57. I'm a slave of truth, not to passion enslaved,
Cursed by God what He has depraved.

58. I'm of the guided adherents' progeny,
Not seekers of only food and plenty.

59. My faith is proof, not their habit and rote,
Choosing this abode, not native roots.

60. What God has enjoined upon you
Exceeds what I have or green gardens accrue.
