1. A friend was angered when I turned from him,
Abu Hafs, I said to him, may I ransom him,

2. Did you not see me expose my honor for his sake
And give him access to my inner self?

3. So I am not one to disparage life itself,
But I will disparage him who disparages me.

4. If I requite his evil with evil,
Who then will care for my hand and its purity but me?
