1. Let those who oppose me know that
I will destroy whatever splendid edifice they build.

2. If they build above me a palace,
I will build walls of nobility higher still.

3. If they build above me a mountain,
I will build to the stars a yet loftier roof.

4. I have looked with eyes of justice and equity
And have never found my scales to favor one side.

5. I have never seen my terrors as anything
But mighty, or my foes as more than despicable.

6. Student of the school, do not criticize my poetry,
Lest you wrong a loyal comrade and trusted ally.

7. Reconsider and be an impartial judge, for I see
You are an adherent of the true Hanifite rite.

8. And say of one who has associated with none
But the wise, cultured men of noble character:

9. Clever in his undertakings, refined in his doings,
Eloquent in his discourse, prudent in his counsel;

10. Upright in his demands, intelligent in his acts,
Chaste in his acquisitions, immaculate in his gains;

11. Noble in his qualities, of exalted lineage,
Graceful in his amusements, gentle in his tread;

12. He excelled in writing, then aspired to vie
With me in verse, seeking to do me injustice.

13. He brought together trinkets, then inclined
To add them to his necklace, so delicate.

14. Having reached ninety-nine, he aspires
To rival the One, the All-Powerful.

15. Your disapproval only encourages his wrongdoing
And you are satisfied to let it pass without rebuke.

16. You are both adversary and judge, so speak justly
And aid me as a stranger seeking justice.

17. Judge me fairly and draw near me with sincerity
And be not harsh in opposing me.

18. Do not attack my unity, but turn
To the greater whole and be virtuous.

19. I have not prevented you sailing the endless sea,
Or reveling in its subtle, gentle pleasures.

20. But leave me to walk my path,
For you can find ample breadth and space.

21. If you insist walking there,
You will not find it frightening.

22. I am content, though pelted with everything;
I am content and have not been fickle.

23. My obedience and sincere friendship are yours.
I have given you the handmaid and the page.

24. Had any but you sought to wrong me,
The deafest ear would hear my angry buzzing

25. With proverbs and parables to shame and rebuke,
Rending the horizon like lightning.
