١. فَزِعْتَ إلى الخضاب فلم تُجَدِّدْ
به خَلَقاً ولا أحييتَ مَيتا

٢. فَدَعْهُ ولا تَعَنَّ به فُواقاً
فأجدَى منه قولُك لو وَلَيْتا

You dyed the white hairs when first they showed, that you might still
٣. خَضبتَ الشيبَ حين بدا لتُدْعَى
فتىً حَدَثاً ضَلالاً ما ارتَجيْتا
4. Be called a youth - straying far astray you hoped to find the way.
Why not try rather to be hailed a youth
٤. ألا حاولتَ أن تُدعى غُلاماً
بحلقِ العارضين إذا التحيتا
5. For your slender shape, when time comes to greet?
I saw you when white clothes of age dressed you round -
٥. رأيتك إذ كساكَ الشيبُ ثوباً
تراهُ العين أسوأ ما اكتسيتا
6. Raiment the eye sees as the worst you ever donned.
The tracks of your long life refused effacing
٦. أبتْ آثارُ دهرك أن تُعَفَّى
بكفِّك شئتَ ذلك أم أبَيْتا
