So be safe from calamities as well

2. You have been perfected in morals and manners
Thus you became a lamp for hearts

While so many traits are false, mere lies

4. O moon that shines without setting
O sun that illuminates without sinking

5. Help me, O Abul Hasan, help me
For you are the one I cry out to in hardship

6. Save me from the flaws that have harmed
Your servant, O spring of those who mourn

7. Why would I seek water from a small pond
When you are the sea of raging waves?

8. How can you draw from pitchers
When you will not run out or dry up?

9. Can the perfect lack manners that came to him?
To a free man who has no sins?

10. Refusing any lessening is my brother Kamal's deed
He is too lofty for deficiencies and flaws

11. Generous without limit to virtues
Or exceeding generosity

12. I seek refuge in you against weakening my armor
For I am in wars because of my time

13. That armor is none but gifts
You bestow on me, O All-Giving

14. With it I defend the fighter from a time
Hostile and aggressive to the noble

15. So do not make an opening in my armor
Or strongholds may be penetrated from holes

16. Would you be pleased if I were frightened
By quasi-bullies or real bullies?

17. While your neighbor, when injustice descends
Is dearer than the hovering vultures

18. Flaws alarm me every month
With tiredness, wakefulness, and persistence

19. It is as if, when I remember them
I am struck by an arrow flaming with fire

20. And it suffices that I am terrified by the horrors of a sea
Before which the mind remains perplexed

21. In it the difficult waves rise high
As if their rising is the rising of wolves

22. I remain, when I happen upon its eddies
Praising God for protection from sinking

23. It plays with me the serious play
Of the surging sea with floating wood

24. I embark upon it morning and evening
Though it can hardly be ridden

25. And how many days has death seemed to me in it
The madness of the waves in the raging south wind

26. Yet He protected me from its evil after despair
God's protection dispelling calamities

27. So who would thrill when the south wind blows?
I am not for it, and by your life delight

28. Rather I have been, since I was an urchin
A slave ruled by the whip of his master

29. Even if the breeze stirred the flowers in my garden
Or if it brought all the beasts running

30. When it falls, I fear its gusts will come
And if it rises, I worry about the rising

31. Why not, when it is an earthquake but
On the back of water, not the back of blasts

32. A confusion for people on land passing by
And all it shakes are in varying states

33. It stirs up headaches and fevers
For the sweet water, clear drinking

34. It takes away minds when they gather
The waves of its turmoil, loud and reverberating

35. And all the land it covers becomes
Swaying, prone, in the sleep of drunkenness

36. Palm trees and other trees become from it
Slain, most of them, by the south wind

37. That wind which I endure
And the Knower of the unseen and the seen

38. And I long for the continuity of my livelihood
And to be given it abundantly

39. And to find it laughing from afar
Pure in both directions from gloom

40. What I long for is not obligatory
But if one obligated to bestow favors is generous

41. He mounts the back of glorious magnanimity
To ride it, and you do not stumble

42. The protective turn you away only
To a path from which you will not go astray
