إذا كنت ذا اثنتين فاعدل أو اتحد

If you have two sides then be just or unite

أراني في الثلاثة من سجوني

I see myself in the third of my prisons

إذا صاحبت في أيام بؤس

When hardship's days have made you friends

يتلون أسفارهم والحق يخبرني

They read their journeys, while the truth informs me

جسم الفتى مثل قام فعل

The young man's body is like an upright spear

أسرار نفسك في البلاد كأنها

The secrets of your soul in the land as though they

تسوقوا بالغنا لربهم

They bartered with songs for their Lord

يا رب عيشة ذي الضلال خسار

O Lord, the life of the misguided is loss

لو هب سكان التراب من الكرى

If the inhabitants of the dust were to arise

خصاؤك خير من زواجك حرة

Your bachelorhood is better than your free marriage

جالس عدوك تعرف من تكاتمه

You know who you are confiding in when sitting with your enemy

قلدتني الفتيا فتوجني غدا

The youth adorned me, and tomorrow they will crown me

دنياي فيك هوى نفسي ومهلكها

My world, in you lies the passion of my soul and its demise

عللاني فإن بيض الأماني

Reason with me, as the eggs of my hopes

عمى العين يتلوه عمى الدين والهدى

Blindness of the eye is followed by blindness of religion and guidance

الموت حظ لمن تأمله

Death is destiny for one who contemplates it,

إذا صغر اسما حاسدوك فلا ترع

When the envious belittle your name, don't fret

من يبغ عندي نحوا أو يرد لغة

Whoever craves poetry with me, or desires the language,

عجبي للطبيب يلحد في الخا

My wonder at the physician who profanes the Creature after studying anatomy,

إذا كنت ذا ثنتين فاغد محاربا

If you have two tongues, go forth as a warrior

أعيبوني حيا ثم قام لهم

They blamed me while alive, then I stood up

يود الفتى أن الحياة بسيطة

The young man wishes that life were simple,

أوحى المليك إلى من في بسيطته

The king revealed to those in his kingdom

تولي يا خبيثة لا هلمي

Turn away, you traitor, do not come near

لقد رجت الله النفوس لكشفه

The souls implored God to reveal

متى أهلك ياقومي

When will I perish, O my people

يرومك والجوزاء دون مرامه

You wrong him while the turtledove coos near him,

يا للمفضل تكسوني مدائحه

O Fadl, your praises clothe me

ألا في سبيل المجد ما أنا فاعل

Though glory's path I tread, what am I doing?

أفوق البدر يوضع لي مهاد

My bed is placed higher than the full moon

أرى العنقاء تكبر أن تصادا

I see the proud she-camel disdain being hunted,

يا ساهر البرق أيقظ راقد السمر

O watcher of lightning, awaken the sleeper of night talk,

إرمنا يا ظلام في كل فج

Darkness pervades every ravine

ألم تر أنني حي كميت

Do you not see that I am alive like a dead man

لعمري لقد بعنا القناء نفوسنا

By my life, we have sold our souls

ساء بريا من البرايا

Became ill from troubles, O you who wear the faith

فتاة بغت أمرا من الدهر معجزا

A girl sought an impossible feat from fate

قران المشتري زحلا يرجى

The buyer's wand like Saturn is hoped

ناديت أقضية الله التي سلفت

I called on the decrees of God that came before

ليبك مسن ثم أجله

Let an old man weep, then pride deferred him

قد اختل الأنام بغير شك

Mankind has surely changed without doubt,

تهجد معشر ليلا ونمنا

A group stayed up late at night while we slept

الطبع شيئ قديم لا يحس به

Nature is an ancient thing that is imperceptible,

ويبكم إن رأيتموني يوما

And if you see me one day

طلبت مكارما فأجدت لفظا

I sought virtues, but found only words,

تفادى نفوس العالمين من الردى

Souls of both worlds have avoided folly

إذا وقت السعادة زال عني

When the time of happiness left me

ما رقش الخط في درج ولا صحف

No pen etched lines in books or scrolls

أرى الخلق في أمرين ماض ومقبل

I see your two young men, if distress befalls the young man

سكنت إلى الدنيا فلما عرفتها

I settled into this world, but when I understood it

عجبت القوم جنبو ثمن الغنا

I wondered at people who avoided the price of song

عققت دنياك إن حاولت خدمتها

You will break your world if you try to serve it

أفدت بهجران المطاعم صحة

I have benefited in health from abandoning restaurants

العيش ثقل وقاضي الأرض ممتحن

Life is hard and the judge of the land is tested

إن تاب إبليس يوما تاب عابدكم

If Iblis repents one day, your worshipper

كم حاول الرجل الدنيا بقوته

How often has man tried to possess the world

يا أمة في التراب هامدة

O nation lying lifeless in the dust

يا روح شخصي منزل أو طنته

O my soul, the abode you built and departed from

علمي بأني جاهل متمكن

Know that I am an ignorant man of conviction

ليس اغتنام الصديق شأني

It is not my way to take advantage of a friend

سألتكم لا تكنوني لتكرمة

I beg you do not patronize me

إذا أمنت على مال أخا ثقة

When you entrust wealth to a trusted brother

دنياك هذي منام إن جزى حلم

This world of yours is but a dream; if patience is rewarded in it

أصمت سويداء قلب من تلهبها

The heart of the fiery volcano was silenced by its eruption

لقد أسفت وماذا رد لي أسفي

I have regretted, but what has my regret returned to me

فضيلة النطق في الإنسان تمزجها

The virtue of speech in man is marred

متى أنا للدار المريحة ظاعن

When will I return to the abode of rest

نصحتك لا تقدم على فعل سوءة

I advise you, do not commit an evil deed

مناطق غلمان وأحجال أنس

The regions of boys and the tents of intimacy

رويدك لو كشفت ما أنا مضمر

Slow down, if you unveiled what I harbor

إسمع مقالة ذي لب وتجربة

Hear the words of one prudent and experienced;

أراك زنيما إذا تعرضت ليلة

I see you as a coward whenever you face

يحاول طينا أرمنيا لعله

He tries to mold Armenian clay, perhaps

إذا ألف الشيء استهان به الفتى

When something becomes familiar, the youth takes it lightly,

سنك خير لك من درة

Your old age is better for you than a shining pearl

إذا لؤم الفتى لم يخشى مما

If a young man is blamed, he does not fear

كم آية يؤنسها معشر

How many signs are made convivial by a group,

الموت نوم طويل لا هبوب له

Death is a long sleep, with no wakening breeze

أيا ديك عدت من أياديك صيحة

O cock, your cry prepared by your hands

مكان ودهر أحرزا كل مدرك

A place and time have grasped all comprehension

أراك حسبت النجم ليس بواعظ

You think a star doesn't preach wisdom

إذا حرق الهندي بالنار نفسه

When the Hindu burns himself with fire

أتتك بحب فتاة غدت

A maiden brought you love, then

أتاني بإسناده مخبر

A reporter brought me his account

عز الذي بالموت رد غنينا

How mighty is He who with death turned back our wealthy and poor alike

رأى الأقوام دنياهم عروسا

The people saw their world as a bride,

ترنم في نهارك مستعينا

Sing cheerfully in your daytime

جهلتك بل عرفتك ما خشوعي

تعالى الله وهو أجل قدرا

God comes, though telling of Him is far

لم يسقكم ربكم عن حسن فعلكم

Your Lord did not deny you for your good deeds

إذا ما عددت السن عدت بترحة

When I count the years, I count with remorse,

لبكر لعمري بكر الدهر بالردى

For my lifetime, alas, the days have hastened misfortune,

الدهر لا تبقى عليه نعامة

Time does not stay still for an ostrich

افهم عن الأيام فهي نواطق

Learn from the days, for they are expressive,

دع آدما لا شفاه الله من هبل

Leave Adam, may God not heal his lips of raving

وفر هذا الفتى مديد بسيط

This young man's poetry is simple, refined

نزلت عن الكميت إلى كميت

You descended from a heap to a heap

ناديت حتى بدا في المنطق الصحل

I called until the bare ground appeared in the speech

شربت الراح بالراح

متى تشرك مع امرأة سواها

When you share with any woman but her

ربيت شبلا فلما إن غدا أسدا

You raised a cub, but when it grew into a lion

أجمل بي من أن أعد امرأ

It's more beautiful for me than to count a man

خف يا كريم على عرض تعرضه

Go easy, O generous one, on a reputation that you expose

يجوز أن تطفأ الشمس التي وقدت

The sun that shone

لانت على المس بالأيدي جسومهم

Their bodies prostrate in prayer

لخالقنا الحكم القديم وكم فتى

Our Ancient Creator's judgment, and how many

ضحكنا وكان الضحك منا سفاهة

We laughed, and our laughter was foolishness

أسأت بعبدك في عسفه

You have ill-treated Your servant in his tyranny,

لنا أرب لم نقضه منك فادكر

We have a debt to you we have not yet paid, so be reminded

عليك بتقوى الله في كل مشهد

Be mindful of God in every scene

إذا سلقت عرس الفتى في كلامها

When the youth's slip of the tongue flays in her words

يقولون في المصر العدول وإنما

They say in Egypt the judges are just, but truly

جاء القران وأم الله أرسله

The Quran came and Allah sent it

يا ناق صبرا أنت في أينق

Oh you who bear adversity with such patience

طباع الورى فيها النفاق فأقصهم

The nature of mankind is filled with hypocrisy, so shun them

أرى الناس شرا من زمان حواهم

I strived to be helpful, harmless, and honest.

متى ينفع الأقوام حي يكن له

When will a living man who causes them harm benefit the people, while the living cling to themselves?

أرقت فهل نجم الدجنة آرق

I stayed up late, did the star of darkness stay up?

غرك سود الشعرات التي

You're deceived by the blackness of the hair

خاب الذي سار عن دنياه مرتحلا

He has missed the mark who wandered from his homeland journeying

حسب الفتى من ذنوب وصفه رجلا

A man's worth lies not in sins described,

سواء هجودي في الدجى وتهجدي

My vigils in darkness and waking at dawn,

أما الزمان فأوقات مواصلة

As for time, it is a series of moments

قل للمشيب يد الأيام دائبة

Tell old age the hand of days is diligent

إذا كنت بالله المهيمن واثقا

If you trust in God, the Sustainer

ما أكرم الله عز من ملك

How generously has God, Almighty, honored the king,

من الناس من لفظه لؤلؤ

Some people's words are like pearls

أستغفر الله رب مدكر

I seek forgiveness from Allah, Lord of the grateful one

الناس إن لم تنبهم قيامتهم

If people are not awakened by their demise,

أجاهد بالظهارة حين أشتو

I struggle at noon when I yearn

إنما المرء نطفة ومداه

Man is but a single sperm, his life-span but a moment

قد رضت نفسي حتى ذل جامحها

I have indulged my soul until its unruliness bowed down

ظمئت إلى ماء الشباب ولم يزل

I thirst for youth’s water, still

أخو الحرب كالوافرالدائري

Brother of war like the abundant rotating one

وجدتك في رقدة فانتبه

I caution you against this slumberer

متى ما شئت موعظة فعرج

Whenever you wish to be admonished, head

إن أكلتم فضلا وأنفقتم فض

If you eat extravagantly and spend extravagantly

بنت نصارى نزلت من ذرى

A Christian's daughter descended from on high

أعوز الشث والسلم

The thorn bush and ladder failed

رب اكفني حسرة الندامة في ال

My Lord, spare me the regret of remorse in the future, for I am one who is inclined to regret.

تعالي قدرة وخفوت جرس

Come, my ability and softness of voice

والدنا الدهر به طيشة

Our life is reckless and wild,

يمر الحول بعد الحول عني

The years pass by me one after another

وددت وفاتي في مهمه

I yearned for my death in an important matter

دنياك دارشرور لا سرور بها

This world of yours is an abode of evil, no joy in it

لو اني كلب لا عترتني حمية

Had I been a dog, zeal would have restrained me

عنصر واحد وما القار في هي

One element, and the jar does not contain it

الناس مختلفون قيل المرء لا

People are different, it is said a person is not rewarded for a deed, and it is said he is rewarded

أردت إهانتي فحماك مني

You wished to humiliate me, but my fate protected me

أرى الشهد يرجع مثل الصبر

I see the honey returning like patience

لا تعذلاني فالذي أبتغي

Reproach me not, for all I seek

يعرى اللئيم من الثناء ويكتسي

The base man is stripped of praise and dons

تعود إلى الأرض أجسادنا

Our bodies return to earth

سبحان ربك هل يزول كغيره

Glory be to your Lord, does He pass away like others?

الشيب أزهار الشباب فما له

The gray hair is the flowers of youth, so why hide it

لا تأنفن من احترافك طالبا

Do not disdain your profession if you seek

أوى ربي إلي فما وقوفي

My Lord brought me close, so I stand not

أفي الإحسان غربا جاء جذبا

Is kindness found lacking in the West, attracting blame,

للخير منزلتان عند معاشر

Goodness has two dwellings with every group of people,

تناقض ما لنا إلا السكوت له

Our only option is silence in the face of contradiction

فقدت في أيامك العلماء

The scholars lost their way in your days,

لا ينزلن بأنطاكية ورع

No pious man descends in Antioch,

لا تقطع الحين مغتابا لغافلة

Do not now disdain the heedless folk

يا ربة الخدر عدي ميتة وسنا

O Lady of the tent, count me among the dead

قضاء يوافي من جميع جهاته

A fate that comes from all directions

إذا كنت لا تسطيع دفع صغيرة

If you cannot ward off a small affliction,

لقد وضعت حواء أمك بكرها

Indeed Eve, your mother, placed her virginity

أتدري النجوم بما عندنا

Do the stars know what we have

مومس كالإناء دنسه الشر

A prostitute like a vessel dirtied by vice

جوارك هذا العالم اليوم نكبة

Staying close is now devastating

أسرك أن كانت بوجهك وجنة

It delights you that your cheek holds

أشدد يديك بما أقو

I strengthen your hands with what I say

عبر الشباب لأمه العبر

The youth passed away, leaving grief for his mother,

غدت أم دفر وهي غير حميدة

The mother of Dafr has become immoral

سألت منجمها عن الطفل الذي

She asked her astrologer how long her cradled child

طفئت عيون الناظرين وأشرقت

The eyes of the onlookers are extinguished, while

لا تصحبن يد الليالي فاجرا

Do not accompany the nights of debauchery, my friend

نقضي الحياة ولم يفصد لشاربنا

We live our lives, yet no drink is poured for us,

أقصرت من قصر النهار وقد أنى

I fall short of the palace of daylight though

تمنت غلاما يافعا نافعا لها

She wished for a young, useful lad for her

كيف احتيالك والقضاء مدبر

How can you scheme when fate is already decided?

ثلاث مآرب عنس وكور

Three fateful events, aching grief and blindness

إذا ما عانق الخمسين حي

When a lively man embraces fifty

لا يبصر القوم في مغناك غسل يد

The people do not see in your feast

غير وأنكر على ذي الفحش منطقه

Rebuke and deny the one with obscene speech,

لا تمسين على من مات ملتهفا

Do not grieve for one who died yearning,

يزورني القوم هذا أرضه يمن

The people come visiting, this is their Yemeni land

أرى أمنا والحمد لله ربنا

I see our mother, and praise be to Allah our Lord

لعمري لقد عز المباح عليكم

By my life, the lawful has grown difficult for you,

من يوق لا يكلم وإن عمدت له

He who fears does not speak, even if you try to make him

مساجدكم ومواخيركم

Your mosques and your ablution places

تلفع بالعباء رجال صدق

Men of honor wrap themselves in cloaks,

يلقاك بالماء النمير الفتى

The youth meets you with soft, gentle words

ما جلب الخير إلى

No good was brought to

أما المجاور فارعه وتوقه

The neighbor lost himself in confusion and anxiety,

كأني كنت في أزمان عاد

As though I lived in the days of old

عوى في سواد الليل عاف لعله

He yearned in the darkness of night though unwell, perhaps

الله يشهد أني جاهل ورع

God bears witness that I am ignorant and devout

مللت عيشي فعوجي يا منية بي

I'm weary of this life though its end eludes me still

إن كان قلبك فيه خوف بارئه

If your heart fears its Creator

ما الخير صوم يذوب الصائمون له

What good is fasting when people waste away?

إذا كنت من فرط السفاه معطلا

If you persist in extreme foolishness

إذا المرء لم يغلب من الغيظ سورة

When anger overwhelms a man's will

أعن واقد خبرتني وابن جمرة

The dying embers informed me, and Ibn Jamrah

لقد غادر العيش هذا السواد

Life has left behind this gloom

أنحت جهلا وقد ناحت مطوقة

Do I carve ignorance when a dovecote has lamented

أعكرم إن غنيت ألفيت نادبا

Ikrima, if you sing, you will find me a mourner,

والحكم جار على الأكتاد محتمل

The rule remains supported on tent poles

كأنما الأجساد إن فارقت

As if bodies, when their souls depart

أما والركاب وأقتابها

By the mounts and their saddles

تحل إذا استربت بك اهتضامي

When I feel close to you, my misgivings dissolve

إذا ابنا أب واحد ألفيا

If two sons of one father are brought together

من يخضب الشعرات يحسب ظالما

He who dyes his gray hairs is deemed unjust

يهاب الناس إيجاف المنايا

People fear the advent of death

يؤمل كل أن يعيش وإنما

Each hopes he lives, but only

لولا التنافس في الدنيا لما وضعت

Were it not for rivalry in this world, there would have been no need for

تسمى رشيدا من لؤي بن غالب

He is called Rashid, a descendant of Lu'ayy ibn Ghalib

يحق كساد الشعر في كل موطن

It is right that poetry decays in every homeland

أحسن بهذا الشرع من ملة

This religion's law is better than any creed

تنسكت بعد الأربعين ضرورة

After forty it was imperative to turn ascetic

لا يفقدن خيركم مجالسكم

Let not your gatherings lose their goodness

ما زلت في الغمرات لست بخالص

I'm still lost in confusion, with no escape

أما وفؤاد بالغرام قريح

My heart is sick with love

غدوت مريض العقل والدين فالقني

You have become sick in mind and religion, so leave me

يا كاذبا لا يجوز زائفه

O liar, your lies are unacceptable

يشج بنو آدم بالصخور

Humans crave rocks to quench their thirst

لقد سنحت لي فكرة بارحية

A fleeting thought occurred to me last night,

قد أسرجوا بكميت أطلقت لجما

They rode off with a veil that set free passions

إن كانت لك امرأة حصان

If you have a virtuous wife,

إذا درجت في العالمين قبيلة

When a tribe declines in both worlds,

الكون في جملة العوافي

The universe in the company of the high-minded

كأن إبارا في المفارق خيطت

As if the threads of fate in partings she sewed

دنياك موموقة

Your world is unsteady

الحمد لله قد أصبحت في دعة

Praise be to Allah, I have attained tranquility,

أفارس مقنب وأمير مصر

A horseman with a lance and an Egyptian prince

لقد ترفع فوق المشتري زحل

Saturn has risen above Jupiter

نبذتم الأديان من خلفكم

You have forsaken religions behind you

جنى ابن ستين على نفسه

The son of a sixty year old reproached himself

يأتي الردى ويواري إثلب جسدا

The vicissitudes come and cover a worn-out body,

لا أخطب الدنيا إلى مالك الدن

I do not seek the world from its Master

يا سابحا يصهل في غرة

O swimmer who dives boldly into the deep

ثلاثة أيام لأهل تنافر

Three days for people of discord

لك الملك إن تنعم فذاك تفضل

Yours is the kingdom, whether you are kind, that is grace upon me,

إن كنت صاحب إخوان ومائدة

If you're a friend with company and table

إن شئت كل الخير يجمع في

If you wish for all good to be gathered in one,

إذا أتاني حمامي ماحيا شبحي

When my dove comes to me wiping my ghost

إنما نحن في ضلال وتعلي

We are but lost in error and absurdity

بني الآداب غرتكم قديما

You were beguiled by literature of old

يا آل غسان أقوى منكم وطن

O Aal Ghussan, mightier than you all is a nation

إقنع بأيسر شيء فالزمان له

Be content with the easiest thing, for time

لا تفرحن بفأل إن سمعت به

Do not rejoice at good omens you hear about

لا يعجبن الفتى بفضل

The youth is not impressed by merit,

إذا كف صل أفعوان فما له

If a snake charmer stops charming snakes

إياك والخمر فهي خالبة

Beware of wine, for it is deceitful

ألا عدي بكاء أو نحيبا

Do not count my weeping or lament

بين الغريزة والرشاد نفار

There is estrangement between instinct and guidance,

ليشغلك ما أصبحت مرتقبا له

May what you now await distract you

معاص تلوح فأوصيكم

The pleasures are waving, so I advise you

إذا قيل لك اخش الله

If you are told, “Fear God

يا ملوك البلاد فزتم بنسء ال

O kings of the countries, you have won the youth of life

رميت ظباء القفر كيما تصيدها

You shoot arrows at the deer of the wilderness to hunt them

سألت رجالا عن معد ورهطه

I asked men about Ma'add and his tribe,

أرائيك فليغفر لي الله زلتي

May God forgive me my lapse

قد قيل إن الروح تأسف بعدما

It's said the soul laments when it's parted

أخلت عمود الدين في الأرض ثابتا

You have established the pillar of religion firmly in the earth

بني الدهر مهلا إن ذممت فعالكم

O children of time, give me respite, though you may condemn my deeds,

تناهبت العيش النفوس بغرة

The souls vie for livelihood greedily

مهر الفتاة إذا غلا صون لها

A girl's high dowry protects her

دنياي ويحك ما طرقتك مخ

My life, how I did not choose you

أراهم يضحكون إلي غشا

I see them smile at me deceitfully,

لو أنني سميت طيفك صادقا

If I had called your phantom truthful

عجبا للقطا من الكدر والجو

How strange is the cat, with her constant toil

والخنس الخمس مايخلو فتى ورع

The hidden five bring no pious youth relief

هل تمسك الماء لي مزادي

Will you withhold the water for my provisions,

أين عمر لما دعا أم عمر

Where is the life when Umm Amr was called

قال زمان الناس في صفوه

The people's time said in its prime,

الأرض لله ما استحيا الحلول بها

The land belongs to Allah, how shameful that guests would claim it

من عاش تسعين حولا فهو مغترب

Whoever lived ninety years is an exile

أطرق كأنك في الدنيا بلا نظر

Bow down as if you see nothing in this world,

لا ترقدوا فوق الرحال فإنما

Do not sleep upon your saddles, for it is only

غدا ابن عجوز لها مائرا

Tomorrow the son of an old woman will pass

المال يسكت عن حق وينطق في

Money silences the truth and makes falsehood speak

كم صرف المولود عن والد

How much good has the newborn kept from his father

يا نفس جسمك سربال له خطر

O soul, your body is a garment that is endangered

إذا طلع الشيب الملم فحيه

When the sign of old age appears, welcome it

عجبت لكهل قاعد بين نسوة

I'm amazed at an old man sitting amongst women

توق النساء على عفة

Women are keen on chastity

إذا خطب الزهراء شيخ له غنى

When an old man with wealth proposes to Zahra

من أعجب الأشياء في دهرنا

Among the strangest things in our time—

حملت ثقل الليالي في بني زمني

I carried the burden of nights in my time's sons

وصفتك فإبتهجت وقلت خيرا

I described you so you were delighted and spoke well

أركان دنيانا غرائر أربع

The pillars of this world are four strange truths

بني الحسب الوضاح والشرف الجم

O sons of noble lineage and shining honor,

إن كنت ذارع أرض لم ألمك بها

If you were sowing a land unknown to me

ركب الأنام من الزمان مطية

People have ridden the horse of time,

تراب غيرت منه سمات

Dust was transformed into features,

الحمد لله قد أصبحت في لجج

Praise be to Allah, though I've awoken mid-storm

أدنى الفوارس من يغير لمغنم

The noblest horsemen are those who raid for plunder,

أرى حبلا حادثا في النسا

I see a new burden has come upon women, a burden of sorrows has connected with them

إذا غيبوني لم أبال متى هفا

When they bury me, no matter when, North wind or South wind blowing,

رغبنا في الحياة لفرط جهل

We longed for life due to extreme ignorance

هل يفرح الناعب الغداف بسقيا ال

Does the wailing mourner rejoice at the watering of the land's soil

يا رب أخرجني إلى دار الرضى

Oh Lord, take me to the abode of contentment

ذهاب عيني صان الجسم آونة

My eyes averting preserved my body for a time

أريد ليان العيش في دار شقوة

سترعى إذا ألفيت للفظ خازنا

You will be enriched if you devote yourself as a treasurer to words,

دموعي لا تجيب على الرزايا

My tears do not respond to misfortunes,

يدعو الغراب أناس حاتما سفها

Some foolish people call the raven fickle

حياة وموت وانتظار قيامة

Life and death and awaiting resurrection

وعظ الزمان فما فهمت عظاته

Time admonished, yet you did not understand its admonishments

دنياك أشبهت المدامة ظاهر

This world resembles wine in appearance

لو كان لي أمر يطاوع لم يشن

If I had power to be obeyed, the palms

فوارس خيلكم تعطى مناها

Your cavalry steeds are given their due

مصائب هذه الدنيا كثيرة

The misfortunes of this life are many,

الجل مود ولا جلمود يتركه

The sand dunes yield but leave no trace behind,

تكلم بالقول الذي ليس فوقه

He spoke with words that have

إذا شئت يوما وصلة بقرينة

If one day you desire a companion of purity

قرن بحج عمرة وقريننا

He combined pilgrimage with 'umrah, and paired us

هي غربتان فغربة من عاقل

There are two estrangements: estrangement from sanity,

فر من هذه البرية في الأر

Flee from this wilderness in the land, for naught but evil comes from it

أمل حبيب أدل

A lover hoped and confessed

إذا ما تقضى الأربعون فلا ترد

When forty years are done, desire no more

إذا عشت مفتكرا في الأنام

If you live reflecting on people

دنياك والحمام في رتبة

Your world and the pigeons are of one rank

آليت أرغب في قميص مموه

I wish I could wear a striped shirt

إن لم نكن عائمي لج نمارسه

If we are not swimmers of stormy seas,

وبالي فيك يا دنيا وبالي

My woes for you, O world, and my woes for me!

أعجل بتسبيح رب لا كفاء له

Hasten to praise a Lord beyond compare,

ما أوصل السيف قطاعا لحامله

The sword never connected its bearer as a cutter

أوالي هذا المصر في زي واحد

The cycle of this land in one attire

إن هللت أفواهكم فقلوبكم

If your mouths rejoice while your hearts

تدري الحمامة حين تهتف بالضحى

The dove knows when it coos at dawn

طلب الخسائس وارتقى في منبر

He sought lowly goals and ascended the pulpit

أنسل أو اعقم فالتوحد راحة

Be gentle or be still, for solitude is rest;

أجمل فعالك إن وليت ولا تجر

Do your best when trusted, and do not drag

تولى سيبويه وجاش سيب

Sībawayh turned away, and a cause of longing arose

إن كان من فعل الكبائر مجبرا

If he who commits grave sins is compelled,

قلتم لنا خالق حكيم

You said there was a Wise Creator

وردت إلى دار المصائب مجبرا

I have come back to the abode of afflictions, compelled,

يصون الحجى والبذل أعراض معشر

They protect speech and generosity, the traits of a people,

ألا يا جون ماوفقت

Alas, O John, you have not succeeded

سبح وصل وطف بمكة زائرا

Glorify, pray, circumambulate around Mecca as a visitor

تظل كفي لحرفي إن لمست بها

My hands will retain your scent if touched by them

لو صح ماقال رسطاليس من قدم

If what Rustam said were true, that the dead would not be resurrected

تدين غاويهم حذار أميرهم

Their devotion to religion was out of fear of their king

تمسك بتقوى الله لست بقائل

Hold fast to the fear of God, I am not one who speaks idly

إذا ما شئتم دعة وخفضا

If you wish for ease and tranquility

قد آن مني ترحال ولم أفق

The time has come for me to depart though I have not yet awakened

أيا والي المصر لا تظلمن

O governor of Egypt, do not oppress

بحمد الله لم تخلق كعاب

With praise to Allah, no wrong was created

زعموا بأنهم صفوا لمليكهم

They claimed that they aligned for their king

طال التبسط منا في حوائجنا

Long has our dependence on favors persisted

سقى ديارك غاد ماؤه نعم

The generous rain has watered your home, excellent indeed

إذا قلت إن الشيب لله صبغه

When you say that gray hair is dyed by God

أخو سفر قصده لحده

Brother of travel, its goal is its end

غلت الشرور ولو عقلنا صيرت

Evil has prevailed, though we were wise, it was destined

سباك الله يا دنيا عروسا

God keep you, O world, my bride

يا ثالث الثنيين في خمسة

O third of the two in five

أما حياتي فما لي عندها فرج

My life grants me no respite,

ماذا يريبك من غراب طار عن

What makes you suspicious of a raven that flew from

خير النساء اللواتي لا يلدن لكم

The best of women are those who do not bear children for you

ظهور الركاب عند اللبيب

The appearance of riders to the wise

طاعم أنت وارد عذب ماء

You supply the thirsty drinker sweet water

قد بدل العالم عاداتهم

The world has changed their habits

رضيت ملاوة فوعيت علما

I was content with eloquence, so I gained knowledge,

أمالي الزمان على بنيه

The hopes of time upon its sons

إله قادر وعبيد سوء

A powerful God and servants gone astray

أذهني طال عهدك بالصقال

My mind, long has been your polishing.

إذا بلغ الإنسان خمسين حجة

When a man reaches fifty pilgrimages

طرق الغي سهلة واسعات

The paths of misguidance are easy and spacious,

سمعتك مخبرا فنظرت فيما

I heard you speaking and looked into what

إذا المرء صور للناظرين

When a man portrays to onlookers

أم دفر جزيت شرا فديا

O mother of misfortune, may you be repaid with evil instead of good

إجتنب الناس وعش واحدا

Avoid people and live alone

هذا زمان ليس في أهله

This is an era with no one in it

أما الإله فأمر لست مدركه

The deity is beyond my ken—

تسمت رجال بالملوك سفاهة

Men boast of being kings in folly,

سبح الله طالع مستنير

Allah be praised, a bright dawn rises

عليك بتقوى الله في كل حالة

Put your trust in God in every state,

ألم تر أن جسمي فيه فضل

Have you not seen that my body has merit

بئس الشهادة إذا سألت شهادة

Wretched is the testimony when you ask for a testimony

لم لا أؤمل رحمة من قادر

Why should I not hope for mercy from the Almighty

لا تحدث القطع في كف ولا قدم

Do not cause a cut in hand or foot,

قد عمنا الغش وأزرى بنا

Deceit has spread among us and wronged us

تكذب قوم يستعيرون سؤددا

A people denied though borrowing brands

والأمر يدرك عن قدر فكم خطئت

And matters are understood according to fate, so how often have you been mistaken,

يكفيك أدما سليط ماأريق له

Enough for you is a defamer running his mouth

تضاعف همي أن أتتني منيتي

My troubles have doubled, now that my wish has come to me

تصدق على الأعمى بأخذ يمينه

Be charitable to the blind by taking his right hand

كأن نجوم الليل زرق أسنة

The stars of night are like blue lances

لا خير من بعد خمسين انقضت كملا

No goodness after fifty when perfected

إن الطبيب وذا التنجيم ما فتئا

The doctor and astrologer never cease

هو الفلك الدوار أجراه ربه

He is the revolving sphere its Lord has set spinning

لقد كرمت عليك فتاة قوم

The daughter of a people has honored you,

أمذهبة التراس لرد كيد

The rounds of fate wear down barricades,

تخيرت جهدي لو وجدت خيارا

I chose my endeavor even if I found no choice

إذا انفرد الفتى أمنت عليه

When a youth is alone, trust is placed in him

فارسا كان رب فارس كسرى

A knight was the Lord of the knights of Chosroes,

أوعز الدهر بالفناء إلى النا

Time decreed death for all the people

يحسن مرأى لبني آدم

A pleasing sight for people,

تجنب الوعد يوما أن تفوه به

Avoid promising what you will say one day

دعوا وما فيهم زاك ولا أحد

They called but among them there was neither pure nor anyone

إذا جلست على أقتاد ناجية

When I sit by a companion beloved

نعم الوساد يميني ما بقيت لها

How pleasant is my right hand pillow when I rest upon her

إذا ما رأيتم عصبة هجرية

Whenever you see a modernist group

أبيد على التناسب كل يوم

I am destroyed due to disproportion every day

متى أنا في هذا التراب مغيب

When will I be buried in this dust,

عاقبة الميت محمودة

The end of the deceased is praiseworthy

إني ونفسي أبدا في جذاب

I and my soul are ever in conflict

تشاور بكرك في نفسها

She consults with her virginity within herself

أصمت الشهور فهلا صمت

You kept silent for months, why not keep silent still,

ما لي رأيتك لا تلم بمسجد

I have not seen you blame a mosque,

بوارق للحاب لا للسحاب

Beacons for the beloved, not for the clouds,

اللب قطب والأمور له رحى

The pole star is fixed, and the stars revolve around it.

كريم أناب وما أنبا

Noble is he who repents though he's not blamed,

أمامة كيف لي بإمام صدق

Ummama, how can I have a truthful leader

الصمت أولى وما رجل ممنعة

Silence is best, for no feet are prevented

لا كانت الدنيا فليس يسرني

Were this world everlasting, still it could

إذا سنة بكى تشرين فيها

When a year weeps, October weeps in it

يكون الذي سمى من القوم خالدا

He who is named among the people as eternal

أودوا إلى الله ما أود ومفخرها

I give to God what I own and its pride

إذا غدوت عن الأوطان مرتحلا

When you leave your homelands as a wanderer

ما أسلم المسلمون شرهم

No Muslim has been spared their evil,

إن كنت يعسوب أقوام فخف قدرا

If you're a sparrow amidst a folk then live humbly,

من قلة اللب عند النصح أن تأبى

From lack of good sense when admonished you refuse

إذا ما عراكم حادث فتحدثوا

When misfortune befalls you, then talk,

الخير كالعرفج الممطور ضرمه

Goodness is like a watered palm tree, tended by

الصبر أروح من حاج تكلفه

Patience is more refreshing than a pilgrim whose ostentation

لذاتنا إبل الزمان ينالها

Our pleasures are the camels of time taken

بعالج بات هم النفس يعتلج

With a healer, the soul's worries churn,

أسطر لاب حولهن جهول

Lines with no illumination around them

إجعل تقاك الهاء تعرف همسها

Make your devotion know her whisper's caress

لقد ركزوا الأرماح غير حميدة

Alas, they thrust their spears with no good intent,

غبقنا الأذى والجاشرية همنا

We were overcome with harm and fear consumed us,

ما باختياري ميلادي ولا هرمي

My birth and aging were not my choice

تلف البصائر والزمان مفجع

The eyes and time are devastated

يا قوت ما أنت ياقوت ولا ذهب

O Might, you are no ruby nor gold

أنفت وقد أنفت على عقود

I refused, and I have long refused bracelets,

عيوبي إن سألت بها كثير

If you ask about my faults, many will tell of them,

بقيت وما أدري بما هو غائب

I remain though I know not what is absent,

زعموا أن ما يذكر إن قا

They claimed that if what's masculine is made feminine, it won't lack masculinization

إذا صقلت دنياك مرآة عقلها

When life polishes the mirror of her mind,

أعمارنا جاءت كآي كتابنا

Our lives have come like verses in our book

البابلية باب كل بلية

Babylon is the gate of every affliction,

سأفعل خيرا ما استطعت فلا تقم

I will do good as much as I can, so do not blame me

أما والله لو أني تقي

By Allah, if I were pious

نرجو الحياة فإن همت هواجسنا

We seek life, though cares oppress,

العيش ماض فأكرم والديك به

Life passes, so be kind to your parents while they are here

الدهر لونان أعيا ثالث لهما

Time has two colors, a third perplexes them,

نفوس أصابتها المنايا فلا تكن

Souls struck by death, do not despair,

ما يشأ ربك يفعل قادرا

Whatever your Lord wills He performs with power. He transcends all speech and objection. We gathered without guidance and dispersed without accord. We relinquished testimonies of piety, then faced decline and extinction. Our bodies borrowed health and relied on sickness and disease.

فويحهم بئس ما ربوا وما حضنوا

Alas, how poorly they nurtured and cradled their young!

كأن منجم الأقوام أعمى

The fortune teller of people is as though blind,

إصبر فمن حيث أهين الحصى

Patience, for from the place where pebbles are disgraced

قد حجب النور والضياء

The light and radiance are veiled,

إذا قيل غال الدهر شيئا فإنما

If time is blamed for anything, it is the Lord of time that is meant

راعتك دنياك من ريع الفؤاد وما

Your world cared for you with the plentitude of affection, yet cared not for you in life with kindness and regard,

حاجي نظيم جمان والحياة معي

Haji Nazim of Juman Life accompanied me,

جسمي أودى مر السنين به

My body has been worn down by the passing years

حبست كتاب العين في كل وجهة

You have imprisoned the book of the eye in every direction

يا ربة الصمت أنت آمنة

O mistress of silence, you are safe

مغنية هذي الحمامة أصبحت

This dove has become a songstress

وجدت الأنام على خطة

I found people following a crooked path,

إذا ما جد كلب وهو أعمى

If a blind dog wrestles

الدهر يصمت وهو أبلغ ناطق

Time is silent, yet more eloquent than

أزل هموم الفؤاد واصبر

Remove the sorrows of my heart and be patient

يا بدوي اتق المدامة إن ال

O bedouin, beware of drunkenness, for wine

أيا مفرقي هلا ابيضضت على المدى

O parting one, if only you had whitened over the expanse

قفي وقفة تعلمي

Stand still for a moment to learn

أخفت حلوم الناس أم كان من مضى

Have people's reason diminished or were those gone foolish with little reason?

يقولون إن الجسم ينقل روحه

They say that the body transfers its soul

أبعد من الناس تطرح ثقل ألفتهم

I'm distanced from people, relieved of their burdensome friendship,

يحل بمهر رحيق الرضاب

The perfume of camphor acts lawful with dowry

وجدت غنائم الإسلام نهبا

I found the spoils of Islam looted

أصاح هي الدنيا تشابه ميتة

This world resembles a lifeless corpse

ألكني إلى من له حكمة

Take me to one who has wisdom

لم يكن لي عرش فيثلم عرشي

I had no throne for it to be stained, my throne

رويدك قد غررت وأنت حر

Slow down, you have been deceived though you are free,

ألم تر للدنيا وسوء صنيعها

Have you not seen the evil ways of this world,

عليكم بإحسانكم إنكم

With your benevolence, for when you write ill of others, you shall be trampled down.

أنعش في السماء وذاك أمر

A coffin in the sky, that's an amazing thing

إذا ودك الإنسان يوما لخلة

If one day a man loves you for a trait

كن وشيكا في حاجة أو مكيثا

Be quick in need or wait patiently,

لعمري لقد أدلجت والركب خائف

By my life, I have surely journeyed whilst the caravan is fearful,

دعي وذري الأقدار تمضي لشأنها

Leave destiny to take its course,

قد طال في العيش تقييدي وإرسالي

Long has my life been shackled and sent forth,

يقولون صنع من كواكب سبعة

They say it's made of seven stars aligned,

تزوجتها وهي فيما تظن

I married her while she was, as you think,

أثرى أخوك فلم يسكب نوافله

Your brother's death left you bereft,

أمر الخالق فاقبل ما أمر

The Creator commanded, so accept what He ordered

لقد مات جني الصبا منذ برهة

The youth of springtime died long ago

ما راعت البرة في بذرها

The doe cared not for her seeds

الشهب عظمها المليك ونصها

The meteors, glorified by the King and supported

أتذهب دار بالنضار وربها

Does a house in all its beauty disappear,

مولاك مولاك الذي ما له

Your Master, your Master, He who has

خذ المرآة واستخبر نجوما

Take the mirror and ask the stars

غرائز لما ألفت جمعت ردى

When instincts were created, they gathered harm

أما الصحاب فقد مروا وما عادوا

The companions have passed away, never to return,

غنينا عصورا في عوالم جمة

We sang for ages in crowded worlds,

لأمواه الشبيبة كيف غضنه

The waters of youth, how they withered,

كل امرؤ يضحي مريا

Every man makes sacrifices

سمى ابنه أسدا وليس بآمن

He named his son Lion, yet lives without security

أصبحت غير مميز من عالم

I have become indistinguishable from a world,

تخيم يا ابن آدم في ارتحال

O son of Adam, you settle down during travels,

عجبت لملبوس الحرير وإنما

I am amazed at the silk garment, yet

هذا طريق للهدى لا حب

This is a path of guidance, not of love

ينجمون وما يدرون لو سئلوا

They prognosticate though they know not, if asked

إذا شئت أن ترقى جدارك مرة

If you wish to transcend your wall one time

يا واعظي بالصمت ما لك لا

O my silent preacher, why do you not

عجبت لشارب بزجاج راح

I'm amazed by a drinker with an empty glass

لا تكذبن فإن فعلت فلا تقل

Do not lie, for if you do, do not claim

وجدتكم لم تعرفوا سبل الهدى

I found you knew not the paths of guidance,

للرزق أسباب تسبب

The means of sustenance are preordained

الحظ يقسم عاش بشر ما اشتكى

Fate divides fortune, a man lived happy, with no complaints

إركع لربك في نهارك واسجد

Bow to your Lord in your day and prostrate yourself

لا شام للسلطان إلا أن يرى

The sultan has no authority unless he is seen

ظلم مستضعف وأخذ مكوس

Oppression of the weak, and seizing of property

قد علموا أن سيخطف الشبح

They knew the phantom would soon disappear

الحمد لله أضحى الناس في عجب

Praise be to Allah, people are amazed

أكفئ سوامك في الدنيا مياسرة

Turn your efforts in life to bring prosperity

الحكم لله فالبث مفردا أبدا

Judgement belongs to Allah, so never spread rumors

لعمري لقد نام الفتى عن حمامه

By my life, the young man slept away from his goal

نصحتك لا تنكح فإن خفت مأثما

I advise you not to marry, if you fear sin,

ما خص مصرا وبأ وحدها

Not only has disaster befallen Egypt alone,

كفي شموسك فالسرار أمانة

Enough of your suns, for secrets are a trust

فهل بلاد يعري الموت ساكنها

Is there a country whose people death lays bare,

المين أهلك فوق الأرض ساكنها

Dissension destroyed the inhabitants of the earth,

لقد علم الله رب الكمال

The Lord of Perfection, God, knew well

لا أسأل المرء قرضا من شهادته

I do not ask a person for a loan from his testimony,

خلافك بعض الناس يرجى به المنى

Your opposition to some people is hoped to bring about wishes

لا ملك للملك المقصور نعلمه

The destined king, we know him not,

قد يحج الفتى ويغنى بعرس

The young man may go on pilgrimage and sing of a wedding

حياة عناء وموت عنا

Life is hardship, and death is hardship too,

إذا عدت الأوطان في كل بلدة

When homelands are like prisons in every country

على الكذب اتفقنا فاختلفنا

We agreed upon lies, yet we disagreed

غض الجفون إذا جلس

Shut your eyes when sitting

سفكت دم الدنان وما تشكت

She shed the blood of the feeble, yet she did not complain,

داء هذا الأنام لا يقبل الطب

This era's malady rejects all remedy

بلوت من هذه الدنيا وساكنها

I have experienced the wonders of this world and its inhabitants,

إذا كان علم الناس ليس بنافع

If people's knowledge brings no benefit

وارحمتا للأنام كلهم

Have mercy and compassion for all people

غسل المليك بلاده من أهلها

The king washed his land clean of its people

أسيت على الذوائب أن علاها

I grieved for the twilights that adorned it

هي الدار ماحالت لعمري عهودها

That abode whose glories did not last, alas,

أرمى وجدك من رامي بني ثعل

The skills of your archers, O tribe of Tha'labah,

يا حصان النساء كم فارسا ول

O steed of women, how many horsemen have fallen

الجسم كالصفر يكسوه الثرى صدأ

The body is like zero, covered by earth, rust

لو أن كل نفوس الناس رائية

If all people's souls were visionary

قومي إلى ربك مختارة

Arise to your Lord as His chosen one,

قال المنجم والطبيب كلاهما

The astrologer and the doctor both said,

أخبرت عن كتبك أعجوبة

You told of the wonders contained in your books,

لقد نفق الرديء ورب مر

The ignoble man perished, and however much bitterness

من يعرف الدنيا يهن عنده

Whoever knows this world will be humbled

توخي جميلا وافعليه لحسنه

Seek the beautiful and act for its goodness,

أرى اللب مرآة اللبيب ومن يكن

I see the kernel as the mirror of the wise, and he who has

إذا رأيتم كريما عند غيركم

When you see a noble man as a guest of others,

بقائي الطويل وغي البسيط

My long survival and melancholy of Basīṭ,

هل ألهمت يثرب يوما مثربها

Did Yathrib one day inspire her ruinous state,

أصاح إذا ما أتاك القضاء

My friend, when fate does come for you,

أصحاب ليكة أهلكوا بظهيرة

The people of Layka were destroyed at midday,

كل ذكر من بعده نسيان

Every mention after it is forgetfulness

ما بال رأسك لا تبش بلونه

Why does your head refuse to gray?

الملك لله لا ننفك في تعب

The kingdom belongs to Allah, we do not cease in fatigue

تقل جسومنا أقدام سفر

Our bodies wander the roads of a journey

من لي بأني وحيد لا يصاحبني

Who will sympathize that I'm alone with no companion?

أريد من الدنيا خمود شرورها

I want the evils of this world to fade away

أنوار تحسب من سنا الأنوار

The lights are counted from the radiance of lights,

إن صح لي أنني سعيد

If I am granted happiness,

الموت ربع فناء لم يضع قدما

Death is a barren wasteland where no foot has trod,

إلى ما أجر قيود الحياة

To what do I drag the shackles of life

أسيت إذا غابت الأحجال والغرر

I despair when the encampments and lovely maidens depart,

أطل صليب الدلو بين نجومه

The bucket's cross appeared amidst its stars

تضيق الليالي عن محلة ماجد

The nights are too narrow for Majid's encampment,

أي صفاة لا يرى دهرها

What polished rocks unseen for ages

أيسجنني رب العلا منصف

Does the Lord of the High imprison me, though just?

كم باد في حدثان للدهر من ملإ

How many a host of bygone days that ruled the world,

إن كنت يا ورقاء مهدية

If you are like a soft-skinned doe

خذوا في سبيل العقل تهدوا بهديه

Take the path of reason, you will be guided by its guidance

إذا عفوت عن الإنسان سيئة

If you pardon a man his misdeed

جاءت أحاديث إن صحت فإن لها

Rumors have reached me, if true they are important

ضحك الدهر في محياك مكر

The laughter of fate in your cheeks is cunning

كبار أناس مثل جلة سائم

Great men are like a herd of camels

أعاذلتي إن الحسان قباح

My reproacher, kindness is truly ugly

ماوية المرأة لا تصحب الما

A woman's coquetry does not accompany wisdom,

جنت الغوارس واستقل أخو الغني

The Gharas garden bloomed, and the brother of the rich man gained independence,

لو كنتم أهل صفو قال ناسبكم

If you were people of purity, a fitting address

لقد دجى الزمان فلا تدجوا

Time has darkened, so do not make it darker,

تلا كتاب الله من حفظه

He recited the Book of God from memory

أصمت وإن تأب فانطق شطر ما سمعت

I keep silent, though you refuse me, but speak half of what your ears have heard.

المرء يأبر خسة في طبعه

A man conceals six flaws in his nature

غدوت أسيرا في الزمان كأنني

I have become a prisoner of time, as though

إنا حسبنا حسابا لم يصح لنا

We thought we had calculated correctly, but we were wrong

إذا لم يكن للميت أهل فقلما

If the dead has no kin, rarely will people

يباين شكل غيره في حياته

One's form differs from another's in life

القدس لم يفرض عليك مزاره

Jerusalem, its shrine was not imposed upon you,

أمور سكان هذي الأرض كلهم

The affairs of all the inhabitants of this land

الدين هجر الفتى اللذات عن يسر

Religion is the youth abandoning pleasures easily

إذا ما جاءني رجل حذام

Whenever an uncouth man comes my way,

أسررت إذا مر السنيح تفاؤلا

You rejoiced when the breeze blew, full of hope,

إذا هبت جنوب أو شمال

When the south or north winds blow,

خطوب تألت لا يزال معذبا

Troubles have afflicted one who still suffers,

يا أيها المغرور لب من الحجى

O you who are deluded, abstain from sinful ways

العدل صعب وكلما عدل ال

Justice is hard, and whenever a man deviates from justice, he feels its weight.

سألتني عن رهط قيل وعتر

She asked me of a folk, long passed away

قالت معاشر كل عاجز ضرع

The helpless utter in unison 'Alas!',

ينشر في الدنيا الحديث وينطوي

The news spreads in the world and then folds back

الوقت يعجل أن تكون محللا

Time hastens that you be an analyzer

تحمل عن أبيك الثقل يوما

Bear your father's burden one day,

عصا في يد الأعمى يروم بها الهدى

مضى الناس أفواجا ونحن وراءهم

The people passed by in groups while we trailed behind them

تجاوزت عني الأقدار ذاهبة

قد ينصف القوم في الأشياء سيدهم

The people may be fair to their leader in some matters

الناس بالأقدار نالوا كل ما

People attained all they were destined

بعض الأقارب مكروه تجاورهم

Some relatives are despised when near

سرت بقوام يسرق اللب ناعم

She walked with a figure that steals hearts, so gentle,

لو شاء ربي لصاغني ملكا

Had my Lord willed, He would have made me a king

يا راعي الود الذي أفعاله

O shepherd of affection whose deeds

إن راز عاذلك الرازي مختبرا

If your confidant from Râz or Hijâz tries out

إذا عدت في مرض مكثرا

When you visit the sick too often

إني لمن آل حواء الذين هم

I am of the progeny of Eve, burdened

أيتها النفس لا تهالي

O soul, do not beguile me,

غدونا مثقلين بما اكتسبنا

We rose burdened with all we had gained

متى عدد الأقوام لبا وفطنة

When have the people counted insight and wisdom?

توار بجنح الظلا

The shadows fold their wings

أراني في قيد الحياة مكلفا

I see myself compelled in the shackles of life

كيف الرباح وقد تألى ربنا

How is the breeze when our Lord has sworn

أما المكان فثابت لا ينطوي

As for the place, it is fixed and does not fold,

الحمد لله الذي صاغني

Praise be to Allah who shaped me

أنا الجائر الظالم

I am the oppressor, the unjust

نفوس تشابه أصحابها

Souls resemble their masters

رب درفس خلفه ذائب

The master of beasts, a wolf stalks behind,

كأن عقول القوم والله شاهد

سجايا كلها غدر وخبث

All traits are treachery and deceit

دنياك تشبه ناضحا متردا

Your world resembles a gushing disobedient stream

إذا كان رعبي يورث الأمن فهو لي

أستقبح الظاهر من صاحبي

I loathe the outward behavior of my companion

بك على الناس بالمزموم والرمل

Lament for the people with grief and sorrow

وجوهكم كلف وأفواهكم عدى

Your faces are frowning, and your mouths full of blame,

شربي على المقلة في مقلت

Drink up my cup through gentle sips,

لعمرك ما آسى إذا ما تحملت

By your life! I shall not grieve when

قل للحمامة قد أصبحت شادية

Tell the dove she's become dejected

لا يحسب الجود من رب النخيل جدا

The palm tree's generosity is not deemed great

ما عاقد الحبل يبغي بالضحى عضدا

He who ties the knot at daybreak desires no help

لن تريه إن كنت لما تريه

You will not see him if you remain

سل سبيل الحياة عن سلسبيل

قديما كرهت الموت والله شاهد

Long ago I hated death, and God is my witness,

أرانا اللب أنا في ضلال

Illusion led us to believe we had strayed

لا بد للروح أن تنأى عن الجسد

The spirit must shun the body,

لو اتبعوني ويحهم لهديتهم

If only they had followed me, woe to them!

خذي رأيي وحسبك ذاك مني

Take my advice, and let that suffice from me,

لقد بكرت في خفها وإزارها

She rose early, in her slipper and gown

ما يحسن المرء غير الغش والحسد

Man is skilled in nothing but deceit and envy,

يخبرونك عن رب العلى كذبا

They inform you falsely about the Lord Most High

ما وفقوا حسبوني من خيارهم

توهمت يا مغرور أنك دين

شر على المرأة من حمامها

A woman's wickedness is worse than her folly,

كأنما العالم ضأن غدت

The world is like a flock of sheep

يعلم إلهي يوجد الضعف شيمتي

My God knows weakness is my trait,

مرحبا بالموت والعيش دجى

Welcome death and living is darkness

أين امرؤ القيس والعذارى

Where is Imru' al-Qays and the virgin maids

رأيت جماعات من الناس أولعت

I saw groups of people obsessed

أصبحت منحوسا كأني ابن مس

I have become inauspicious like the son of an ill-omened man

أفطر وصم وأفطر خائفا

Fast and fast while in fear

يا صاع لست أريد صاع مكيلة

O bucket I do not want a bucketful

عبيط ضوائن نحير جزر

The foolish buzz of mean cottages, the croaking of small islands

روح تعدن قضي اليوم وانتظري

A soul that has spent the day waiting,

خف دنيا كما تخاف شريفا

Fear the lowly as you would fear the noble,

أرى طولا عم البرية كلها

I see the long shadow of dusk envelop the wilderness,

أجارحي الذي أدمى أساني

My limbs that have rendered my tongue speechless,

أمسي وأمسي في شحط وإن غدي

My past and tomorrow are in decline, and indeed my day is undoubtedly like two yesterdays.

جاران شاك ومسرور بحالته

Neighbors complaining and delighted with their state

أيا طفل الشفيقة إن ربي

O child of the compassionate mother, my Lord

ما غاب اسحاق البرايا عنهم

Isaac did not stray from the righteous path

أرى السرقات في كفر ومصر

I see thefts in unbelief and Egypt

عليك بفعل الخير لولم يكن له

Do good even if its merit is but the fair impression it leaves on listening ears.

القلب كالماء والأهواء طافية

The heart is like water, and passions float over it

ما للنعائم لا تمل نفارها

What ails these comforts that their charm grows stale

وجدنا اختلافا بيننا في إلهنا

We found differences between us in our God,

أنا صائم طول الحياة وإنما

I fast throughout my life, yet

أعبد الله لا تظاهر لمن جا

Worship God, do not pretend with whoever came

من لي أن أقيم في بلد

Who will allow me to live in a country

يا ظالما عقد اليدين مصليا

O oppressor, folding your hands in prayer

عد عن شارب كأس أسكرت

Turn away from one drinking intoxicating wine,

إذا عثر القوم فاغفر لهم

When people stumble, forgive them,

ألم ترني مع الأيام أمسي

Did you not see me spend my days

أزول وليس في الخلاق شك

I pass away, of the Creator there is no doubt

الصبر يوجد إن باء له كسرت

Patience is found when the baa is voweled

إذا خطب الزهراء كهل وناشئ

When an old man and a youth seek the radiant one,

رآني في الكرى رجل كأني

A man saw me in al-Kura as if

تريب وسوف يفترق التريب

Soon shall we part, though affection still binds us

نفس قد استودعت جسما إلى أمد

A soul that has lodged itself in a body for a time

تلقب ملك قاهرا من سفاهة

A fool took on the title of conqueror in ignorance

لا تهاد القضاة كي تظلم الخ

Do not give gifts to judges, that they may wrong the adversary

إذا صفت النفس اللجوج فإنما

When the stubborn soul is purified, it only

لله لطف خفي في بريته

God has a subtle kindness in His creation

ألو الفضل في أوطانهم غرباء

Strangers excel in their homelands,

أيعلم نجم طارق برزية

Does the bright star of Tariq know of a secret

الصدر بيت إذا ما السر زايله

The heart is a house when the secret departs from it

يا صاح ما ألف الإعجاب من نفر

O friend, none have become accustomed to praise

يا صاح إن حاورت آخر مشفق

O friend, if you converse with another anxious

أما الحقيقة فهي أني ذاهب

The truth is I am leaving

يلام الممسك الإعطاء حتى

The withholder of giving is blamed until

ألا هل أتى قبر الفقيرة طارق

Has not one come to the grave of the poor woman to inform her of the unseen about Tariq's deed?

إذا كنت تهدي لي وأجزيك مثله

If you present me with gifts and I reciprocate alike,

لهفي على ليلة ويوم

How ugly is blame! You said no one grows old

صنوف هذي الحياة يجمعها

The varieties of this life are brought together

ارتاحت النفس بتطهيرها

The soul finds peace in its purification,

ما للفتى عقرت حجاه وماله

What ails the young man who has shunned his kin and wealth?

هي الراح أهلا لطول الهجاء

She is the breeze, a welcome for prolonged satire,

تنافس قوم على رتبة

People vie for rank

لا يغبطن ماش فوارس شزب

Let no walker envy horse riders in flurry

ما أجلي في أجلى حاضر

How unworthy am I in my unworthiest present

أخبت ركابي أم أتيح لها خبت

My mount have stumbled or was I allowed to stumble

أتعوج أم ليس المشوق بعائج

Do you deviate or is the longing one not crooked?

صحبت الحياة فطال العناء

I endured life, so suffering grew long

روحي كالنار أذابت دمي

My soul like fire melted my blood

يحرق نفسه الهندي خوفا

The Indian burns himself in fear

أكرم بياضك عن خطر يسوده

Honor your whiteness from a danger that blackens it

كأنك عن كيد الحوادث راقد

Live miserly as the people of your time,

These are matters, so who can endure them,

تداولني صبح ومسي وحندس

Morning, evening, and noon have passed me by,

جرى الناس مجرى واحدا في طباعهم

People flow in one way, in their natures

أرى جوهرا حل فيه عرض

I see essence in which qualities manifest

ما وقع التقصير في لفظنا

No fault lies in our words,

أمسى خليلك عند اللب محتقرا

At eve my friend was scorned among the tipplers,

بوحدانية العلام دنا

With the oneness of the All-Knowing as my religion

دع الناس واصحب وحش بيداء قفرة

Leave the people and keep the company of the wild deserted waste,

ما راعها من قرى عم وجارمها

No village did it spare, nor any villain,

تحمل ثقل نفسك واحفظنها

Bear the burden of your self and tend to it

خلصت من سبرات في السباريت

I escaped from prisons in my imaginings

ما يفتأ المرء والأبراد يخلقها

Man does not cease to wear out coats,

شعر كساه الدهر صبغة حاذق

Poetry which time has dyed with the hue of a connoisseur

غدوت على نفسي أثرب جاهدا

I roamed my soul, admonishing it insistently,

إدفع الشر إذا جاء بشر

Repel evil when it comes with evil

أنا بالليالي والحواده أخبر

By nights and valleys news to me conveyed,

خير من الظلم للوالين لو عقلوا

Better than oppression for rulers, if they were wise,

صاح الزمان فعاد الجمع مفترقا

أما القيامة فالتنازع شائع

The Resurrection will be fraught with contention,

حالي حال اليائس الراجي

My state is that of the despaired hopeful one

ما لي بما بعد الردى مخبره

What benefit beyond decay do I draw from what's left of life?

يغدو إلى كسب قيراط أخو عمل

He goes to earn a measly carat, a brother of hard work,

لا تبدأوني بالعداوة منكم

Do not begin with enmity towards me

الله لا ريب فيه وهو محتجب

God, no doubt of Him, though He is hidden

فرق بدا ومن الحوادث يفرق

Separation showed its face, and events separate

الناس للأرض أتباع إذا بخلت

People are followers of the earth, stingy when it withholds

والمال يحويه جدوى من يجود به

Wealth contains benefit for one who is generous with it

تخالفنا الدنيا على السخط والرضى

The world opposes us in anger and contentment

يكون أخو الدنيا ذليلا موطأ

قد بكرت لا يعوقها سبل

إله الأنام ورب الغمام

ليذمم والدا ولد ويعتب

أيسمع خالقي مني دعاء

بخيفة الله تعبدتنا

أيا شجر العرا أوسعت ريا

يا أمة ما لها عقول

أشممنا لبنى فقلنا لبينى

قرنت جيشين فكم من دم

لهان علينا أن تمر كأنها

يا كند ما خلت السكون تحركت

طلب النساء شبابه حتى إذا

أوقدت نارا بإفتكارك أظهرت

إذا داع دعاك لرشد أمر

ابن خمسين ضمه عقد تسعين

بعض الرجال كقبر الميت تمنحه

هل قبلت من ناصح أمة

أف لدنيانا وأحزانها

خير وشر وليل بعده وضح

لا أشرك الجدي في در يعيش به

تمزن من مزن السحاب معاشر

ماءنا بالواغل يوما على ال

إذا حضرت عندي الجماعة أوحشت

محمودنا الله والمسعود خائفه

إن جاد بالمال سمح يبتغي شرفا

إن الجديدين ما رثا ولا خلقا

يسوسون الأمور بغير عقل

أيوجد في الورى نفر طهارى

الظلم في الطبع فالجارات مرهقة

الدهر إن ينصرك ينصر بعدها

أرى الخير في عمري حسرة

عجبت لطير بلطف المليك

لو كنت كالرائش أو ذي المنار

عش مجبرا أو غير مجبر

إن نال من مصر قضاء نازل

غدت دار الشرور ونحن فيها

رأيت الحتف طوف كل أفق

عصر شتاء وعصر قيظ

أرى الأرض فيها دولة مضرية

لقد آن أن يثني الجموح لجام

خلو فؤادي بالمودة إخلال

يقول لك إنعم مصبحا متودد

إذا ما مضى نفس فإحسبنه

إن هاجك البارق فإهتاجي

وجدت الناس في هرج ومرج

ألا إن الظباء لفي غرور

لا ترع الطائر يغذو بجه

لو لم تكن طرق هذا الموت موحشة

تيمم فجا واحدا كل راكب

أعوذ بالله من ورهاء قائلة

لقد جاءنا هذا الشتاء وتحته

أيا أرض فوقك أهل الذنوب

لما ثوت في الأرض وهي لطيفة

لا خير في الدنيا وإن ألهى الفتى

انفض ثيابك من ودي ومعرفتي

عيدان قيناتنا من تحت أرجلها

ألا تتفقون الله رهط مسلم

الحظ لي ولأهل الأرض كلهم

الله ينقل من شا

إذا عبت عندي غيري اليوم ظالما

أجل هبات الدهر ترك المواهب

إن شئت ترزق الدنيا ونعمتها

نهاني عقلي عن أمور كثيرة

أترغب في الصيت بين الأنام

بني آدم بئس المعاشر أنتم

بنت عن الدنيا ولا بنت لي

يؤدبك الدهر بالحادثات

يا راعي المصر ما سومت في دعة

لم يقدر الله تهذيبا لعالمنا

إن يقرب الموت مني

لعل أناسا في المحاريب خوفوا

زاره حتفه فقطب للمو

لا تطيعي هواك أيتها النف

قد صحبنا الزمان بالرغم منا

إذا كانت لك امرأة عجوز

لو كنت يعقوب طير كنت أرشد في

لو كنت رائد قوم ظاعنين إلى

قد يسروا لدفين حان مصرعه

الأمر أيسر مما أنت مضمره

لعمرك ما غادرت مطلع هضبة

إذا شئت أن يرضى سجاياك ربها
