1. As if the threads of fate in partings she sewed
The chill of death nights and days its journey made
١. كَأَنَّ إِباراً في المَفارِقِ خَيَّطَت
بُرودَ المَنايا وَاللَيالي سُلوكُها
2. Thought sees that light in life is newly found
Yet time's essence is but its passing charade
٢. يَرى الفِكرُ أَنَّ النورَ في الدَهرِ مُحدَثٌ
وَما عُنصُرُ الأَوقاتِ إِلّا حُلوكُها
3. Then yearn not for kingship, lest you transgress
For wretched are kings, however grand their parade
٣. فَلا تَرغَبوا في المُلكِ تَعصونَ بِالظُبا
عَلَيهِ فَمِن أَشقى الرِجالِ مُلوكُها
4. And dusk each evening certainly imparts
To wise men its tidings and stories relayed
٤. وَإِنَّ غُروبَ الشَمسِ كُلَّ عَشيَّةٍ
يُحَدِّثُ أَهلَ اللُبِّ عَنهُ دُلوكُها
5. Unceasingly do messenger doves visit us
When kin do not, their features remind and persuade
٥. وَما فَتِئَت رُسُلُ الحِمامِ تَزورُنا
إِذا لَم تُشافِه ذَكَّرَتنا أَلوكُها
6. So be steadfast steeds, masking a raid's alarm
That fasting save what glory's vigilance weighed
٦. فَكونوا جِياداً أُضمِرَت خَوفَ غارَةٍ
صَوائِمَ إِلّا مِن شَكيمٍ تَلوكُها
