يجوز أن تطفأ الشمس التي وقدت

1. The sun that shone
Since the days of past nations may be extinguished,

١. يَجوزُ أَن تُطفَأَ الشَمسُ الَّتي وَقَدَت
مِن عَهدِ عادٍ وَأَذكى نارَها المَلِكُ

2. Although the King kept its embers glowing.
If its redness fades throughout the ages,

٢. فَإِن خَبَت في طَوالِ الدَهرِ حُمرَتُها
فَلا مَحالَةَ مِن أَن يُنقَضَ الفَلَكُ

3. The sphere must inevitably unravel.
People passed away - had I not known their state,

٣. مَضى الأَنامُ فَلَولا عِلمُ حالِهِمُ
لَقُلتُ قَولَ زُهَيرٍ أَيَّةً سَلَكوا

4. I would have spoken Zuhair’s verse: which path did they take?
They did not leave the realm of Kingship, nor move

٤. في المُلكِ لَم يَخرُجوا عَنهُ وَلا اِنتَقَلوا
مِنهُ فَكَيفَ اِعتِقادي أَنَّهُم هَلَكوا
