1. Have you not seen poetry take flight, ignited
To soaring heights no commentaries can reach?
١. أَلَم تَرى لِلشِعرى العَبورِ تَوَقَّدَت
بِعالٍ رَفيعٍ لَم تَنَلهُ القَوابِسُ
2. Blessed is He who controls all things; none can refuse
What He desires, nor stop what He releases.
٢. تَبارَكَ رَبُّ الناسِ لَيسَ لِما أَبى
مُريدٌ وَلا دونَ الَّذي شاءَ حابِسُ
3. Swords with yearning blades both scabbing and bloodied;
Horses on whom both wet and dry saddlecloth lie.
٣. سُيوفٌ بِها جَونانِ جارٍ وَجاسِدٌ
وَخَيلٌ عَلَيها الماءُ رَطبٌ وَيابِسُ
4. While Time's face glows dark and man laughs lighthearted,
Mockingly, though faces about him storm and sigh.
٤. وَيَعبِسُ وَجهُ الدَهرِ وَالمَرَءُ ضاحِكٌ
وَيَضحَكُ هُزءاً وَالوُجوهُ عَوابِسُ
5. He sickened of men's talk and all their confusion,
Till he silenced them - no voice now dares arise.
٥. تَكَرَّهَ نُطقَ الناسِ فيما يَريبُه
فَأَفحَمَ حَتّى لَيسَ في القَومِ نابِسُ
6. Chilly clothes are but loans to man, my God!
Truly, they have wearied him, their wear and guise!
٦. بُرودُ المَخازي لِاِبنِ آدَمَ حُلَّةٌ
لَعَمري لَقَد أَعِيَت عَلَيهِ المَلابِسُ
