1. If the dead has no kin, rarely will people
Visit his grave out of pretense.

2. And if misery touches your soul, you will have
No helper but to endure with resolve.

3. Did the weeping of Ali or the wailing of Mutammim
Bring Malik bin Nuwayrah back to life?

4. I prepared steeds for the corpse, but glory
Cannot be attained with a bridled horse.

5. Rather, with spear tips and horse hoofs
And striking the valleys with sharpened swords.

6. And pulling a gown ants crawl over
To blindfold the crowned jurist.

7. You will never taste the sweetness of life
Unless you live the life of a witless fool,

8. Hearing what deafens the virtuous,
With no respite but obsessed pigeons.

9. Your share is the elephant's tossing
If you approach it holding your nose.

10. Time's bitterness made me
Like a water skin patched and mended.

11. So return my body to the pure elements,
Find rest when performing dry ablution.
