If a man lets his soul indulge in pleasures,

إن يرسل النفس في اللذات صاحبها

1. If a man lets his soul indulge in pleasures,
He shall be neither glorious nor kingly.

١. إِن يُرسِلِ النَفسَ في اللَذّاتِ صاحِبُها
فَما يُخَلَّدنَ صُعلوكاً وَلا مَلِكا

2. But he who purifies his soul with the fear of God,
Is of a people whose likeness is angelic.

٢. وَمَن يُطَهِّر بِخَوفِ اللَهِ مُهجَتَهُ
فَذاكَ إِنسانُ قَومٍ يُشبِهُ المَلَكا

3. The drinker of wine is lost in his drunkenness,
As if a fiery demon has taken hold of him,

٣. وَشارِبُ الخَمرِ يُلفى مِن غَوايَتِه
كَأَنَّ مارِدَ جَنّانٍ بِهِ سَلَكا

4. It changes his reason until he deems it permissible,
To extend his hand to seize the stars.

٤. تُغَيِّرُ العَقلَ حَتّى يَستَجيزَ بِهِ
مَدَّ اليَمينِ لِكَيما تَقبِضَ الفَلَكا

5. You spend the night far from it, without provision,
Yet imagine the two settings are yours.

٥. تَبيتُ عَنها عَديمَ الزادِ مُخفِقَهُ
وَقَد تَوَهَّمتَ أَنَّ الخافِقَينِ لَكا

6. The life of instinct is but twenty, though it pursues a hundred.
Alas! What drinker attains such an age!

٦. عُمرُ الغَريزَةِ عُشرونَ اِقتَفَت مائَةً
هَيهاتَ أَيُّ لِجامٍ قَلَّما أَلِكا

7. I do not ask about one whose birth was ninety years ago,
Except to be told, “He has passed away!”

٧. وَما أُسائِلُ عَن شَخصٍ لِمَولِدِهِ
عَشرٌ وَتِسعونَ إِلّا قيلَ قَد هَلِكا

8. You have wasted yourself on fruitless matters,
Sleep and slumber, halves of which are sufficient.

٨. تَمَسَّخَت في أُمورٍ غَيرَ طائِلَةٍ
سُهدٍ وَنَومٍ وَوَفَّت نِصفَها حَلَكا

9. Man strives either striking his horse forward,
Towards death, or mounting his ship.

٩. وَالمَرءُ يَحرِصُ إِمّا ضارِباً فَرَساً
إِلى المَنونِ وَإِمّا راكِباً فُلُكا
