ليس أب كحنظلة بن رعد
Not like Hanẓalah ibn Ra'ad is any father,
أبيت أمني النفس أن سوف نلتقي
I refused the wishes of my soul that we will meet
أروني من يقوم لكم مقامي
Show me who can take my place
ألا من مبلغ عني زيادا
Will no one tell Ziyad that I fled,
نمتك قروم أولاد المعلى
The tents of the descendants of Mu'alla
ألم تر ما قالت نوار ودونها
Did you not see what Nawar said, and below her
ألكني وقد تأتي الرسالة من نأى
Embrace me though the message may come from one afar
ألم تر أنا يوم حنو ضرية
Did you not see that on the day of sorrow's visit
غدوت وقد أزمعت وثبة ماجد
I set out at dawn, resolved like the intrepid Majid,
ومنا الذي لا ينطق الناس عنده
Among us is he who people do not speak in his presence,
أبى الحزن أن أسلى بني وسورة
Sorrow refused solace for my sons though
يا قوم إني لم أكن لأسبكم
O my people, I was not about to insult you
فأعقب الله ظلا فوقه ورق
Then Allah shaded it with foliage above it
بني نهشل هلا أصابت رماحكم
O sons of Nahshal, they came as spears upon
نعم أبو الأضياف في المحل غالب
Generous is the host in his dwelling, though shivering
ومطروفة العينين قد قدت للصبا
With languishing eyes I was led to youth
بكت عين محزون فطال انسجامها
The tearful eye of a sorrowful one wept long, extending its flow.
كيف نخاف الفقر يا طيب بعدما
How can we fear poverty, O virtuous one, after
عصائب كانت في القبور فبعثرت
Dust were they and to dust returned
ستأتيك مني إن بقيت قصائد
You will receive poems from me, if I live,
أبلغ أمير المؤمنين رسالة
Convey to the Commander of the Faithful a message
تحن بزوراء المدينة ناقتي
My she-camel yearns for the outskirts of the city,
اعمد إذا كنت مختارا ندى رجل
If you are chosen as the fresh dew of a man’s foot
لعمرك ما في الأرض لي من مصاهر
By your life! I have no in-laws in the land
ألستم عائجين بنا لعنا
Are you not pleading with us, may we be cursed?
ما نحن إن جارت صدور ركابنا
We are not to blame if our chests are narrow
إذا ما أتيت العبد موسى فقل له
When you meet the slave Musa, then say to him,
إما دخلت الدار دارا بإذنها
Either I entered the house with her consent,
أرى كاهلي سعد أتى منكباهما
I see the shoulders of Saad have come, bent over
أبلغ معاوية الذي بيمينه
Convey to Mu'awiyah, in whose right hand
أبلغ أبا دوود أني ابن عمه
Tell Abu Dawud I'm his cousin's son
لئن قيس عيلان اشتكتني لمثل ما
If Qais 'Ailan complained of me because
وعيد أتاني من زياد فلم أنم
A warning came from Ziyad, and I could not sleep
كيف ترى بطشة الله التي بطشت
How do you see the might of God that smote
حلفت برب الجاريات إذا جرت
I swore by the Lord of the flowing winds, when they blow
جعلت لها بابين باب مجاشع
I made two doors for her, one submissively imploring
فقد بلغتني من كنت أرجو
You have conveyed to me the one I hoped
تصرم عني ود بكر ابن وائل
The love of Bakr son of Wael has turned from me
وإن تميما منك حيث توجهت
Wherever you direct your steps, whether up the staircase or down,
أمر الأمير بحاجتي وقضائها
The prince ordered my need and its fulfillment
أفي طرفي عام وكيع ومحرز
Two years have passed and I am dejected and safeguarded
أبلغ زيادا إذا لاقيت جيفته
When you meet his corpse, tell Ziyad
إن بغائي للذي إن أرادني
My enmity is for he who, if he wished me
إذا المرء لم يحقن دما لابن عمه
If a man does not defend the blood of his cousin
وقائلة والدمع يحدر كحلها
Her tears flowed and she wept as kohl dripped from her eyes
سقى أريحاء الغيث وهي بغيضة
Ariha was watered though she's hateful to me
ما للمنية لا تزال ملحة
Death, you are ever so bitter,
صيداء شأمية حرف كمشترف
A fawn from Damascus, an eloquent word as if peering out
ألا طالما رسفت في قيد مالك
How long did I drag my chains as Mâlik's slave
لعمري لأعرابية في مظلة
By my life, she is an Arabian woman in a tent
ولنا قراسية تظل خواضعا
We have a fortress that remains submissive
إن الذي سمك السماء بنى لنا
He who set the sky with stars built for us
وركب قد استرخت طلاهم من السرى
The remains of encampments against whose sides
أمسى لتغلب من تميم شاعر
The poet of Tamim triumphed in the evening
سلوت عن الدهر الذي كان معجبا
I asked about the days of old that were so wondrous
أقول لمنحوض أعالي عظامها
I say to the lofty ruins whose bones
إذا مسمع أعطتك يوما يمينه
If a generous person gave you with their right hand one day,
إني حلفت بصارع لابن له
I swear by a wrestling champion, a son to him
كيف بدهر لا يزال يرومني
How unfortunate is time's ever-scheming course
رأيت جريرا لم يضع عن حماره
I saw Jarir, he did not unload from his donkey
رأيتُ نوار قد جعلت تجنى
I saw Nouwar making excuses
ألم أرم عنكم إذ عجزتم عدوكم
Did I not ward off your enemy from you when you were helpless
نظرنا ابن منظور فجاء كأنه
The son of Manzur looked, appearing as though
لها صاحبا فقر عليها وصادع
It has an owner, poverty is incumbent upon it, and its sides
لأسماء إذ أهلي لأهلك جيرة
The names though my tribe are neighbors of yours,
عجبت لأقوام تميم أبوهم
I'm amazed by people whose father is Tameem
سرت ما سرت من ليلها ثم واقفت
She traveled part of the night, then halted
لبسن الفرند الخسرواني دونه
He wore a Frangie coat over his Khusrawani,
أظن رجال الدرهمين تسوقهم
I think the two-dirham men are led
فدى لرؤوس من تميم تتابعوا
Fidya for heads of Tamim who followed
لقد ضرب الحجاج ضربة حازم
Al-Hajjaj struck a decisive blow
أبي سود تفيض دموعي
My dark father, my tears overflow
ترى جسدا عيناك تنظر ساكنا
You see a body, your eyes look upon, motionless
خضبت بجيد الحناء رأسي
I dyed my head with henna
أتيناك زوارا ووفدا وشامة
We came to you as visitors, a delegation and a mark
وهم بين بيت الأكثرين مجاشع
And they are between the houses of Akthareen submissive
أعرفت بين رويتين وحنبل
I recognize between two hillocks and Hanbal
ولقد نهيت مخرقا فتخرقت
I surely forbade him who tears clothes, yet he tore (them)
يا ابن المراغة إنما جاريتني
O son of Maragha, you only attacked me
جر المخزيات على كليب
He dragged disgraces upon Kulaib,
وآلفة برد الحجال احتويتها
A friendly camp whose tents defend from biting frost,
إن استراقك يا جرير قصائدي
Your plagiarizing my poems, O Jarir,
ألم ترني ناديت سلما ودونه
Did you not see me call out to Salma, though below her
لو أن قدرا بكت من طول ما حبست
If a pot could weep from being locked away
ما زلت أرمي الكلب حتى تركته
I kept pelting the dog until I made him
لقد هاج من عيني ماء على الهوى
My eyes overflowed with tears for the one I love
وجدنا الأبرش الكلبي تنمي
We found the Kalabi noble breed nurturing
لقد كان في الدنيا لمنية مذهب
Death had a sure approach in this vain life,
لا تحسبا أني تضعضع جانبي
Do not think that I am shaken by the loss
قعودك في الشرب الكرام بلية
Your sitting at generous drinking is a calamity
وداع بنبح الكلب يدعو ودونه
Bidding farewell with the barking of a dog calling its companion
من للضباب المعييات وحرشها
Who will protect the weary mists and their tribe
فإنك إن تغل بالمكرمات
So if you honor with kindness
ألكني إلى راعي الخليفة والذي
Lead me to the shepherd of the Caliph and the one
أيعجب الناس أن أضحكت خيرهم
Do people wonder that I laughed at their best man,
ذكرت داوود والأشراف قد حضروا
I remembered David while the nobles were present
ألا إن حبا من سكينة لم يزل
Indeed, a love from serenity has never ceased
لولا أن تقول بني عدي
Were it not for Bani 'Adiyy saying:
إني من القوم الرقاق نعالهم
I'm from the humble people, their sandals
بنو دارم يا ابن المراغة أسرتي
O sons of Darim, O Ibn Al-Maragha my family
جرى بعنان السابقين كليهما
The two racers ran with slackened reins,
ولا حاتما أزمان لو شاء حاتم
Neither Hatem nor time if Hatem willed
أتصرف أجمال النوى شاجنية
The graceful palms bend mournfully
فإن تهدموا داري فإن أرومتي
Though you demolish my house, yet my courtyards
يرد على خيشومها من ضجاجها
Her nose-rein is jerked back by her snorting,
لبئست هدايا القافلين أتيتم
How wretched are the gifts of the caravans you brought,
فقلت للنفس هذي منية صدقت
I said to my soul this is inevitable death
لقد علمت وعلم المرء أصدقه
I have known and a man knows his most truthful one
تعجل بالمغبوط عجل من القرى
A troop from the villages hurries to the fortunate one
غلبتم الناس بالحق الذي لكم
You have overcome the people with the right that is yours
إذا ما أتيت العبد موسى فقل له
When you come to the slave Moses then say to him
نزع ابن بشر وابن عمرو قبله
The son of Bishr and the son of 'Amr took it before him,
وجدنا الأزد من بصل وثوم
We found the Azd eating onions and garlic,
تصيح به الأصداء يخشى به الردى
Its echoes resound, it instills fear,
وصيابة السعدين حولي قرومها
The tents of Sa'd are pitched around me,
ستأتي أخا جرم على النأي مدحتي
A brother of virtue will come from afar praising me
أو تعطف العيس صعرا في أزمتها
Or the she-camel bends her neck in distress
سقى الله قبراً يا سعيد تضمنت
O Sa'eed, may God water a grave that contains
مكان ابنها إذ هاجني بعوائه
In place of her son when he disturbed me with his wailing,
وما زلت مذ كنت الخماسي تتقى
Since I was a boy of five years, war and foes have targeted me
عرفت المنازل من مهدد
You knew the stages from Mahdad
لو أعلم الأيام راجعة لنا
If I knew the days would come back to us
بني نهشل لا أصلح الله بينكم
O Banu Nahshal, may Allah not make peace between you
كل امرئ يرضى وإن كان كاملا
Though every man be satisfied, were he perfect,
أيوب إني لا إخالك تمتري
Job, verily I doubt not you are noble
تقول أراه واحدا طاح أهله
You say you see a man whose family has perished
وأرعن جرار إذا ما تطلقت
And the neighing of a stallion when his
وليلة ليل قد رفعت سناءها
And on a night of darkest night I raised its brightness
إذا تقاعس صعب في خزامته
If the going gets tough in his den
وآب الوفد وفد بني فقيم
The envoy came, the envoy of Bani Fuqaim
إذا ما العذارى قلن عم فليتني
If the maidens say, “Who is he?” I wish
حنيفة أفنت بالسيوف وبالقنا
Hanifa spent her swords and spears
ولا اتبعتكم يوم ظعن فلائها
Nor did they follow you on the day of rift, so blame them,
ولما رأيت الجود تجري جياده
When I saw generosity spurring on its steeds
ولو أسقيتهم عسلا مصفى
Though you gave them honey pure distilled,
إني لقاض بين حيين أصبحا
I am between two lives that have become
لئن تفرك علجة آل زيد
If the tribe of Zayd should turn against you
يا آل تميم ألا لله أمكم
O clan of Tamim, by Allah, he is your protector
أحل هريم يوم بابل بالقنا
Huraym breached the walls of Babylon with his spear
فأغلق من وراء بني كليب
Behind the sons of Kulayb, 'Aṭiyya
عضت سيوف تميمٍ حين أغضبها
The swords of Tameem bit when they were enraged
أرى الدهر لا يُبقي كريما لأهله
I see time does not leave one noble for his own
كتبت وعجلت البرادة إنني
I wrote and hastened the letter, for I
أبي الشيخ ذو البول الكثير مجاشع
My father, the old man with abundant urine
يرددني بين المدينة والتي
He wavers me between the city and she
عميرة عبد القيس خير عمارة
The home of 'Amirat, slave of al-Qais, is the best home
وما عن قلى عاتبت بكر ابن وائل
I do not reproach Bakr ibn Wa'il's tribe
إني لأستحيي وإني لفاخر
I am shy, yet I boast
بكت جرعا مروا خراسان إذ رأت
Khorasan wept bitterly when it saw
وكم من ناذرين دمي رمتهم
How many votaries have devoted their blood to you
ستعلم يا عمرو بن عفرا من الذي
You will know, O Amr son of Afra, who is to blame
أنا ابن ضبة فرع غير مؤتشب
I am the son of Dabba, a branch not twisted
ألا طرقت ظمياء والركب هجد
Alas the night knocked and the caravan hastened
وركب كأن الريح تطلب عندهم
And they ride as if the wind seeks refuge with them
إذا مالك ألقى العمامة فاحذروا
When Malik throws off his turban beware
أباهل لو أن الأنام تنافروا
How dreadful, if people in hostility strove,
إني ابنُ حمال المئين غالب
I am the son of the carrier of the water skins
ألا كيف البقاء لباهلي
Alas! How can the ignorant survive
سما لك شوق من نوار ودونها
For you yearning from Nawar and below it
ولما دعا الداعون وانشقت العصا
When the callers called and the staff split,
لولا يدا بشر بن مروان لم أبل
Had it not been for the hand of Bishr son of Marwan, I would not have suffered
وليس بعدل إن سببت مقاعسا
It is not justice if I revile seats
ضيع أولاد الجعيدة مالك
Malik has squandered the wealth of the Ju'aydah,
رعت ناقتي من أم أعين رعية
My she-camel grazed in Umm Ayman, a grazing
يقول الأطباء المداوون إذ خشوا
The doctors prescribing medicine fear
أعياش قد برذنت خيلك كلها
You exhausted your horses, every one
تميم بن زيد قد سألتك حاجة
Tamim, son of Zayd, I have asked a favor of you
نحن أرينا الباهلية ما شفت
We saw Bāhilīyah not sated
فما فاضلت بيتا ببيتك عامر
No house excelled yours in glory, O Amer,
فتحت لهم حتى فككت قيودهم
You opened for them till you unshackled their chains
ليس ابن دحمة ممن في مواثقه
Ibn Dahma is not one to break his word,
لعمرك لا يفارق ما أقامت
By your life! They will not abandon what they erected
ليبك ابن ليلى كل سار لنائل
Let every man who reaches his goal weep for Layla's son,
بالعنبرية دار قد كلفت بها
With ambergris a house wherein I dwelled
ليس العقائل من شيبان نافقة
The enemies are not all hypocrites with white hair,
كيف ببيت قريب منك مطلبه
How can I seek a home that's near you
فرب ربيع بالبلاليق قد رعت
Many a spring the water buckets at dawn have come round,
لقد أمنت وحش البلاد بجامع
The wild beasts of the land have found safety in a unifier,
لولا دفاعُك يوم العقر ضاحيةً
Had you not defended Iraq
وقفت على باب النميري ناقتي
My she-camel stood at the Numayri's door
طرقت نوار ودون مطرقها
The lamps of Nawar cast their glow
إني رأيت أبا الأشبال قد ذهبت
I saw the father of cubs whose hands
إذا أثفروا كل خفاقة
If they unsheathe every unsheathed sword
سما لك شوق من نوار ودونها
Your longing spans a beautiful, radiant light
أبى الحزن أن أنسى مصائب أوجعت
Grief refused that I forget the afflictions which pained
منا الخلائف والنبي محمد
Our successors are from us, as is the Prophet Muhammad
وفتيان هيجا خاطروا بنفوسهم
And youths stirred in their souls
رأيت سماء الله والأرض ألقتا
I saw the heavens and earth cast down
أبى الصبر أني لا أرى البدر طالعاً
Patience refused that I don't see the full moon rising
نعى لي أبا حرب غداة لقيته
Abu Harb died; when I met him
زار القبور أبو مالك
Abu Malik visited the graves
مهاريس أشباه كأن رؤوسها
Their tents are like the graves of 'Aad, abounding
إن ابن بطحاوي قريش نمى به
Indeed the son of Bat’ha, of Quraysh, grew
دعا دعوة الحبلى زباب وقد رأى
Zabab called the call of the pregnant, and he saw
يا سلم كم من جبان قد صبرت به
O ladder, how many cowards have you endured
ولكني اطمأن حشاي لما
Yet I put my worries to rest when
فقالوا له رد الحمار فإنه
They said to him, "Return the donkey for your
نظر الدلهمس نظرة ما ردها
The gallant cast a glance, unreturned,
عجبت لحادينا المقحم سيره
I wondered at our guide urging his camel on
دعي مغلقي الأبواب دون فعالهم
Leave behind the door-closers and their actions,
اسمع ثنائي فإني لست ممتدحا
Hear my praise, for I do not flatter
ألا أيها الناهي عن الورد ناقتي
O you who forbid me from roses
ألا إن اللئام بني كليب
Alas! The despicable Bani Kulaib
ومن حين قحطاني سجستان أصبحوا
Since the drought struck me, the people of Sajistan
ضيع أمري الأقعسان فأصبحا
The two imprudent men ruined my affair, so they weep
لقد علم الأحياء في كل موطن
The living in every homeland knew
حبلا به رجعت نفوسكم
Your souls have returned bound to it,
ولم تك تخشى جعفر أن يصيبها
Nor did Ja'far fear that his debauchery
إن تك تبخل يا ابن عمر وتعتلل
If you withhold, O son of Omar, and make excuses
شعثا قد انتزع القياد بطونها
With disheveled hair they had torn out its bands,
إن بلالاً إن تلاقيه سالماً
Indeed, if Bilal you meet as a friend
إذا شئت غناني من العاج قاصف
A maiden amid branches, her roots entwined
لعمري لا أنسى أيادي أصبحت
By my life! I shall not forget the hands
ما أنت إن قرما تميم تساويا
You are not worth, if a Quraysh man is equalized
إن تسأل الأشياخ من آل مازن
If you ask the elders of the clan of Mazin
لئن أصبحت قيس تلوي رؤوسها
If Qais turn their backs in the morning
وشغلت عن حسب الكرام وما بنوا
You were preoccupied from noble deeds though they did not build
ألا أيها السؤال عن جلة القرى
O you who ask about the ruins of encampments
ألا سلت الله ابن سلتى كما نعى
Has God not taken the son of my aunt just as he took
من كل ذات حبائك ومفاضة
From all your loved ones and overflowing generosity
إن ابن أحوز قد داوت كتائبه
The forces of Ibn Ahwoz have been infected
طرقت نوار معرسي دوية
The caravan of a bride's procession stopped
أما قريش أبا حفص فقد رزئت
Quraysh mourns over you, Abu Hafs
يختلف الناس ما لم نجتمع لهم
People differ until we unite for them,
ترى كل منشق القميص كأنما
Every tear in the torn shirt
ما ابن سليم سائرا بجياده
The son of Sulaym never rode off with his steeds
إذا سومت للبأس أغشى صدورها
When they prepare for war, jet blackness
أنت الذي عنا بلال دفعته
You are the one who drove away our adversity
يقيم عصا الإسلام منا ابن أحوزٍ
The pillar of Islam among us is the son of Ahwaz
وجاء قريع الشول قبل إفالها
The scorching summer came before the grass withered
حلفت برب مكة والمصلى
I swear by the Lord of Mecca and the praying-place
أتصرف عن ليلى بنا أم تزورها
Do you turn away from Layla or do you visit her?
ألا زعمت عرسي سويدة أنها
Alas! My sweetheart claimed that my memory of reproaches was quick for her
ستأتي على الدهنا قصائد مرجمٍ
The desert mounts will bear sculptures' rhymes
لم أر كالرهط الذين تتابعوا
I have not seen the likes of the group who followed one another
ولست بنائل قمر الثريا
I do not seek the moon of Thurayya,
رفعت سناني من هوازن إذ دنت
I raised my spear against the Huwazin when they advanced,
لقد طلبت بالذحل غير ذميمة
They sought glory, no ignoble men,
إذا هرت الأحياء حربا مضرة
When vicious creatures make war,
كم من مناد والشريفان دونه
How many a caller and the noble ones below him
ما ضرها أن لم يلدها ابن عاصم
It did not harm her that she was not born to the son of ʿĀṣim,
ألا قبح الله الكروس والتي
Alas damning the easy chair and she
تظل بعينيها إلى الجبل الذي
With her eyes she looks to the mountain
فلئن فخرت بهم لمثل قديمهم
Though I may boast of a people like those of old
عزفت بأعشاش وما كدت تعزف
You played love songs but could hardly play them well,
رعاء الشاء زيد مناة كانوا
The shepherds of sheep, Zayd and Manah
منع الحياة من الرجال وطيبها
Life's sweetness is denied men by the eyes
تبكي على المنتوف بكر ابن وائل
The son of Wael weeps for Manṭūf
إني حلفت برب البدن مشعرة
I swear by the Lord of creation, with veils unfurled,
كتبتم زعمتم أنها ظلمتكم
You claimed that she has wronged you
لقد علمت سكينة أن قلبي
Sukaynah has known that my heart is
لقد سر العدو وساء سعدا
The enemy rejoiced and Sa'd grieved
أتيت الأشعث العجلي أمشي
I came to al-Ash'ath the 'Ijliyy riding
سأجزيك من سوآت ما كنت سقتني
I will repay you for the flaws you led me to
لو شئت لمت بني زبينة صادقا
Had I desired, I would have stayed with the clan of Zabina truthfully,
إذا شئت هاجتني ديار محيلة
When I wish, a land of exile stirs me,
أمير المؤمنين وأنت
O Commander of the Faithful, and you are a guardian
أتنسى بنو سعد جدود التي بها
Do the sons of Sa’d forget those ancestors by whom,
أنبئت أن العبد أمس ابن زهدم
I'm told the slave yesterday, son of Zahdam
إذا عدد الناس المكارم أشرفت
When people recount virtues,
وحلت بدهناها تميم وألجأت
Tamim's she-camels came to Dahna's valley, seeking
لست بلاق مازنيا مقنعا
You are not an idle Mazen, hidden or covered,
ألم تر جنبي عن فراشي جفا به
Have you not seen how insomnia kept me from my bed,
إن يك خالها من آل كسرى
If her birthmark is from the family of Chosroes
لعمري لئن كان ابن أمي دعت به
By my life, if my mother's son answered when called
وجدتك حين تنسب في تميم
I found you attributed to Tamim,
فاربط لأمك عن ربيك أتانه
Tie up your mother's donkey away from your Lord
يا سائلي أين حلّ الجود و الكرم
O questioner, where are generosity and nobility?
ديار بالأجيفر كان فيها
The abodes in Al Ujayfir, wherein
عجبت إلى قيس تضاهي كلابها
I marveled at the Qays, whose dogs rivaled
وأقسم أن لولا قريش وما مضى
I swear if it were not for Quraysh
أهاج لك الشوق القديم خياله
The image of the past awakened your longing,
لقد كدت لولا الحلم تدرك حفظتي
I almost lost my composure, were it not for my forbearance,
ألم تريا أن الجواد ابن معمر
Have you not seen that the steed, son of Ma'mar
قل لعدي جاء من كنت تبتغي
Say to the enemy who has come
لعمرك ما ليث بخفان خادر
By your life! No coward with two slippers is a lion
تصدعت الجعراء إذ صاح دارس
The stones cracked as Daris let out a cry,
إن المصيبة إبراهيم مصرعه
Indeed, Abraham's demise is an affliction
ولما دنا رأس التي كنت خائفا
When the head of she whom I feared drew near,
غنمنا فقيما إذ فقيم غنيمة
We gained booty when the booty of Fuqaim was plentiful,
أتاني بها والليل نصفان قد مضى
He brought her when the night was half over,
لو أن حدراء تجزيني كما زعمت
If only Hadhra would reward me as she claimed
نابي الفراش طري اللحم مطعمه
The bedbug, plump of flesh, his food makes fat—
يا ظمي ويحك إني ذو محافظة
O Zami, woe to you, I am of virtuous character
لعمرك ما في الأزد بالملك قائم
By your life, among the Azd there is no ruler,
إذا رفعوا سمعت لهم عجيجا
When they raise up, you will hear from them clamor,
وأهل حبونا من مراد تداركت
The people of Habouna attained their desires after being thwarted,
سمونا لنجران اليماني وأهله
We sought refuge with Najran the Yemeni and his people,
لا قوم أكرم من تميم إذ غدت
No people are more honorable than Tamim
وإذا عددت بني كليب لم تجد
When you count the sons of Kulayb, you will not find
إن رجال الروم يعرف أهلها
The men of Rome do know my clan
إن تك دارم القدمين جعدا
Though your feet may falter and stumble,
رأيتك قد نضلت وأنت تنمي
I saw you blossoming as you grew
أتاني ابن المسيح فلم يجدني
The son of the Messiah came to me, but did not find me
سألنا منافا في حمالة دارم
We asked the tribe of Manaf for aid in Darim,
أبا حاضر قنعت عارا وخزية
O my father, present and satisfied, dishonor and humiliation
فإن له كفين في راحتيهما
For he has two palms that rain
إذا اعتركت في راحتي كل مجمد
When it is weighed down in my palm, it adorns every frozen one,
أجندل لولا خلتان أناختا
Jandal, if not for two encampments that settled
أتتك رجال من تميم فشهدوا
Men from Tameem came to you bearing witness
إذا خمدت نار فإن ابن غالب
If a fire dies down, then Ibn Galib
إذا فم كبش القوم كان كأنه
When the mouth of the chief of the people looks like,
لقد فرجت سيوف بني تميم
The swords of Bani Tamim have cleared
ولست بناس فضل مروان ما دعت
I am not one who prefers Marwan when
أرى شعراء الناس غيري كأنهم
I see the poets of the people other than me as if they are
ألم خيال من علية بعدما
A specter of my love from Ulayya came to me
لقد رزئت حزما وحلما ونائلا
Indeed, Tamim bin Murr's patience and forbearance were mocked
هلال بن همام فخلوا سبيله
Hilal, son of Hammam, so set him free
لما أجيلت سهام القوم فاقتسموا
When the tribe’s arrows were postponed and partitioned
ألا حي إذ أهلي وأهلك جيرة
O friend! Though your family and mine were neighbors
قال الملائكة الذين تخيروا
The angels who were chosen,
لا تنكحن بعدي فتى نمرية
Do not marry, after me, a tigress of a wife
عرفت بأعلى رائس الفأو بعدما
I knew the high summits of Al-Fao after a year passed,
تلوم على هجاء بني كليب
You blame me for satirizing the clan of Kulayb,
إن ابن يوسف محمود خلائقه
The son of Yusuf Mahmud, his manners are bad
إن النوائح لا يعدون في عمر
The wailers do not count in a lifetime
ورث الخلافة سبعة آباءه
He inherited the caliphate from seven of his forefathers
إن التي نظرت إليك بفادر
She who glanced at you with fluttering eyes
لقد علم الأقوام أن محمدا
The people knew that Muhammad
رأيت العذارى قد تكرهن مجلسي
I saw the girls have come to dislike my company
رحلت إلى عبد الإله مطيتي
My she-camel carried me to the worshipper of God
لا بارك الله في قوم ولا شربوا
May God not bless a people who drank
بني جارم إن الصغير بقدره
O children of Jarim, verily small sins in their measure
ألما على أطلال سعدى نسلم
When we passed by the ruins of Su'da's abode
ألست وأنت سيف بني تميم
Are you not the sword of Banu Tamim
لنعم تراث المرء أورث قومه
How excellent is the heritage a man leaves his people,
ما أنتم في مثل أسرة هاشم
You are not the equals of the Hashimite family
غر كليبا إذ اصفرت معالقها
The hound howled when her teats turned yellow,
طرقت أمية في المنام تزورنا
Umayyah visited in a dream, coming to see us,
لعمري وما عمري علي بهين
By my life! My life has not been easy upon me,
لا تمدحن فتى ترجو نوافله
Do not lavish praise on a youth in hopes of his generosity,
لو لم يفارقني عطية لم أهن
Had Atiyyah not parted from me, I'd not be disgraced,
ألم تر كرسوع الغراب وما وأت
Have you not seen the cawing of the raven, and what
يا قاتل الله ليلا كنت أحرسه
O killer of God, I was guarding the night
ما كنت أحسبني جبانا قبل ما
I did not think myself a coward before when
لنا دون من تحت السماء عليهم
We have under the sky over them
لنا عدد يربي على عدد الحصى
We have a number that grows to exceed
فأنت إذ لم تكن إياه صاحبه
Since you were not his companion,
فلم أر منزولا به بعد هجعة
I saw no dwelling after nightfall
أرى الزعل ابن عروة حين يجري
I see Ibn Urwah's son when he runs
وكان يجير الناس من سيف مالك
He used to give people refuge from Malik's sword
لوى ابن أبي الرقراق عينيه بعدما
Ibn Abi al-Riqraq turned his eyes away after
على من وراء الردم لو دك عنهم
If the mound were removed from those behind it
أنسيت صحبتها ومن يك مقرفا
You've forgotten her company, who does that?
إن الرزية لا رزية مثلها
Indeed the calamity, there is no calamity like it
بناها الأقرع الباني المعالي
Built it Al-Aqra' the eminent architect
لقد علم الأحياء بالغور أنكم
The living knew of the valley’s demise, that when misfortune strikes, most prove their worth
وقفت بأعلى ذي قساء مطيتي
I stood at the summit of the rugged mountain pass
ولم تمنعوا يوم الهذيل بناتكم
You did not prevent your daughters from the sons of Kalb and the truthful protector on the day of Hudhayl
لقد تدلق الغارات يوم لقائها
On the day they meet, skulls are her prey
فقالت أليس ابن الوليد الذي له

شعثا شوازب قد طوى أقرابها

تقاصرت الجبال له وطمت
The mountains diminished before him, and the last remnants were annihilated.
أبادر شوالا بظبية إنني
I hasten to Shawwal with a gazelle
وما أحد إذا الأقوام عدوا
None compares when people count
ألكني إلى قطب الرحا إن لقيته
Take me to the pole of comfort, if you find it,
ولولا أن أمي من عدي
Were it not that my mother is an Adite,
إليك من الصمان والرمل أقبلت
From the radiant sands and the yellow dunes she came to you,
رأيت أبا غسان علق سيفه
I saw Abu Ghassan hang his sword
ألم يك جهلاً بعد سبعين حجة
Was it not still ignorance after seventy clear proofs
حملت من جرم مثاقيل حاجتي
I have burdened myself with the weight of my sins,
رويد عن الأمر الذي كنت جاهلاً
Be gentle about the matter of which you were ignorant
إلى الأصلع الحلاف إن كنت شاعراً
To the bald impostor - if you claim to be a poet -
أما والذي ما شاء سدى لعبده
By Him who decreed all that He willed for His servant,
شكونا إليك الجهد في السنة التي
We complained to You of the hardship in the year
وقائلة لي لم تصبني سهامها
She said my arrows did not wound her,
ومظلمة علي من الليالي
In the darkness of nights that overwhelmed me
كيف تقول وجد بني تميم
How can you say the tribe of Bani Tamim
إذا زخرت قيس وخندف والتقى
When Qais and Khundif clashed and every true man fell,
يا وقع هلا سألت القوم ما حسبي
O woe, would you not ask the people what is my worth
دعاني جرير بن المراغة بعدما
Jarir ibn al-Murghah invited me, after
حباني بها البهزي نفسي فدائه
My soul is his ransom, loved by Al-Bahnasi
إلى ابن أبي الوليد عدت ركابي
To the son of Abi al-Walid I have returned my mounts,
ويل لفلج والملاح وأهلها
Woe to the paralytic man, and sailors, and their folk,
لما رأيت الأرض قد سد ظهرها
When you saw the earth had closed its back
بل ما رأيت ولا سمعت به
Nay! I have seen nor heard of a day
تزود منها نظرة لم تدع له
She glanced at him, leaving no heart for him,
دعي الذين هم البخال وانطلقي
Leave those who are misers and set forth,
حملنا على جرد البغال رؤوسهم
We carried their heads on the bare backs of camels
لم أر جارا لامرئ يستجيره
I have not seen a neighbor for a man seeking refuge
لعمري لقد قاد ابن أحوز قودة
By my life! Indeed Ibn Ahawz led a battalion
إن الأرامل والأيتام قد يئسوا
The widows and orphans had lost hope,
ابك على الحجاج عولك ما دجا
Cry over Al-Hajjaj, your hope in him has failed
إليك أبا الأشبال سارت مطيتي
To you, O father of cubs, my mare hastened,
وأنتم عضاريط الخميس عتادكم
You are the knights of Thursday, your equipment
أبوك وعمي يا معاوي أورثا
Your father and uncle, O Mu'awiya, inherited
إني وإن كانت تميم عمارتي
Though Tamim was my home, and though I was the pillar of Qudamis,
يا ابن الحمارة للحمار وإنما
Oh son of a donkey she-ass, the donkey begets but an ass
وجدي عقال من يكن فاخرا به
My father whom one would boast of
تزود فما نفس بعاملة لها
He has equipped himself, yet no soul has any means to repel
إذا خندف بالليل أسدف سجرها
When dark night blankets with her pitchy shroud,
وأنى أتتنا والركاب مناخة
How did she come to us when the mounts were tethered
ولقد أتيتكم لئامن فيكم
I have indeed come to you seeking refuge
إليك سمت يا ابن الوليد ركابنا
To you our mounts hastened, O son of Al-Walid
من الشأم حتى باشرت أهل بابل
From Syria to the people of Babylon
نمى بك من فرعي ربيعة للعلى
You have been nurtured by the noble branches of Rabee'ah, for glory,
وقائمة قامت فقالت لنائح
A mourner rose and said to a lamenting woman
إذا شئت غناني من العاج قاصف
When I wish, a skilled singer on an ivory lute
أحار أبت كفاك إلا تدفقا
The seas refused anything from your palm except overflow
وما سال في واد كأودية له
No stream has flowed in valleys like their valleys,
سلوا خالدا لا أكرم الله خالدا
Ask Khalid did not Allah honor Khalid
أهان على المرطان أحداث نهشل
The events of Nahshal have defamed Al Murta'an
لحى الله قوما شاركوا في دمائنا

جزى الله عني في الأمور مجاشعا

وإن كان قد صلى ثمانين حجة
Even if he prayed eighty pilgrimages
يرضى الجواد إذا كفاه وازنتا
The generous man is content when his hands suffice him,
لعمري لقد سلت حنيفة سلة
By my life, verily Hanifa has forged a sword
لقد هتك العبد الطرماح ستره
The reckless slave has torn his veil asunder,
إليك ابن سيار فتى الجود واعست
To you, son of Sayyar, youth of generosity and splendor
عجبتُ لركب فرحتهم مليحة
I was amazed at a caravan whose travelers were cheered
لكل امرئ نفسان نفس كريمة
Every man has two souls, a noble soul
شكونا إليك الجهد في السنة التي
We complained to You of hardship during the year
إمام منهم للناس فيهم
A leader among them for the people with them
أترجو ربيع أن يجيء صغارها
Does spring hope its flowers will bring good
ودافع عنها عسقل وابن عسقلٍ
Ascalon was defended by the son of Ascalon
إذا ما أردت العز أو باحة الوغى
If you desire glory or the clamor of war,
لقد خاب من أولاد دارم من مشى
He who walked to the fire in shackles
عفى المنازل آخر الأيام
The abodes have excused at the end of days
كن مثل يوسف لما كاد إخوته
Be like Joseph when his brothers nearly
نصبتم له قدرا فلما غلت لكم
You set a cauldron for him, but when its contents boiled over for you
لو كنت من سعد بن ضبة لم أبل
Had I been one of Sa'd ibn Dhubyan's ilk, I would not care
وقفت فأبكتني بدار عشيرتي
I stood still as a house of my tribe made me weep
أعبد الله أنت أحق ماش
I worship Allah, you are most deserving to walk
تغنى جرير بن المراغة ظالماً
Jareer ibn Al-Muraqqah wronged the tribe of Taym
وكوم تنعم الأضياف عينا
At hearths where guests find ease
وإن نقدت يداه فزل عنها
Though his hands were tied, he slipped free,
ولما رأيت النفس صار نجيها
When I saw my soul seeking
إن يقتل النصري تحت لوائكم
If the Christian is killed beneath your banners
أعض حمي ساقه السيف بعدما
A gallant horse bit the sword after
ولو لقيت الذي تكنى بكنيته
If you were to meet the one whose epithet you bear,
حوارية بين الفراتين دارها
A house between the two Euphrates, its lofty seat is cool,
يسقين بالموماة زغبا نواهضا
They water me with bitterness, yearnings renewed
أعيني ما بعد ابن موسى ذخيرة
My eyes, after Ibn Musa there is no treasure
لعمري لقد رد الزمان وريبه
By my life, time and its vicissitudes
بنات المهاري الصهب كل نجيبة
The daughters of the skillful dancers, each noble
لعمري لئن كان ابن عمرة مالك
By my life, if Umarah's son has wronged you
على المتردفات بكل خرق
On she-camels, with all sort of saddle cloth,
قد بلغنا على مخشاة أنفسنا
We have reached on the backs of our souls
ستبلغ مدحة غراء عني
A virtuous eulogy from me will reach
ألا من لمعتاد من الحزن عائدي
Alas! Is there anyone accustomed to sadness returning to me,
حسبت قذافي بعد عام ولم يكن
You thought Gaddafi after a year, yet Gaddafi
إن تميما كل جد لجدها
Tamim, with all her valor, bows
ليبك وكيعا خيل حرب مغيرة
Let War's horses weep copiously, a defeated army
وبيض ترقى من بنات مجاشع
White and bright, daughters of a tender father,
فطامن نفسي بعدما نشزت بها
My soul was calmed after it rebelled
منا الذي اختير الرجال سماحة
Among us are those chosen as the most clement of men,
لعمري لأثماد بن خنسا وماؤه
By my life! The water of Athmad the son of Khansa
نام الخلي وما أغمض ساعة
The night has passed and I have not slept an hour
ألما على دار بمنقطع اللوى
When at a house, deserted and forlorn,
نكفي الأعنة يوم الحرب مشعلة
On the day of battle, our light swords suffice,
أرى ابن سليم يعصم الله دينه
I see the son of Sulaym, may Allah protect his faith,
أنا ابن العاصمين بني تميم
I am the son of steadfast Tamim,
أصيبت تميم يوم خلى مكانه
Tamim was struck when he left his place,
ألا من لشوق أنت بالليل ذاكره
O you who in the night recalls his passionate love,
تمسي الرياح بها وقد لغبت
The winds make it rustle, now that it is uninhabited,
وأضياف ليل قد نقلنا قراهم
And guests of night whose abodes we once knew
لو كنت حيث انصبت الشمس لم تزل
If you were where the sun has risen, our hopes
وإذا الرجال رأوا يزيد رأيتهم
When men saw Yazid, you saw them
إذا عرض المنام لنا بسلمى
When dreams bring me to Salma,
ألا ليت شعري ما تقول مجاشع
Alas, I wonder what the lover will say
لقد طرقت ليلا نوار ودونها
At night a radiant light knocked at my door,
كم للملاءة من طيف يؤرقني
How much unrest does the night visitor cause me,
إن أمامي خير من وطئ الحصى
Before me lies the best of those who trod the pebbles
رأى عبد قيس خفقة شورت بها
The slave of Qais saw a fluttering
إن يظعن الشيب الشباب فقد ترى
Though old age makes youth decline
لعمري لئن مروان سهل حاجتي
By my life, if Marwan fulfills my need
تكاثر يربوع عليك ومالك
The throngs of Jarbu increase against you, and Malik has supremacy
سيبلغ عني غدوة الريح أنها
The morning breeze will tell that it is
إذا باهلي تحته حنظلية
When an ignoble man sires a child upon a prostitute
إليك أبان بن الوليد تجاوزت
To you, Aban son of al-Walid, I have crossed
لعمري لقد كان ابن ثور لنهشل
By my life, Ibn Thawr has certainly made the Bani Nahshal arrogant,
هذا الذي تعرف البطحاء وطأته
This is the one the plain knows his tread
وبواضح رتل تشف غروبه
With a clear, rhythmic chant, whose sunset intoxicates,
أنت المجير ومن تجر تعقد له
You are the shelterer, and whoever you shelter,
يا ابن أبي حاضر يا شر ممتدح
O son of Abi Hadhir, O worst of flatterers
أقول لحرف قد تخون نيها
I say to a letter that betrayed its purpose
إني كتبت إليك ألتمس الغنى
I wrote to you seeking wealth,
إن يك سيف خان أو قدر أبى
If fate betrays or destiny denies
لقد كنت أحيانا صبورا فهاجني
I used to be patient sometimes, yet passion agitated me,
إذا أنت يا ابن الكلب ألقتك نهشل
If you, O son of a dog, are torn apart by hyenas
وبيت لمسعود ابن قيس ابن خالد
A verse by Mas'ud son of Qays son of Khalid
ألم يك جهلاً بعد ستين حجةً
Was it not still ignorance after sixty clear proofs
أي الخلائق ليست في رقابهم
What creature is there that does not have
تذكر هذا القلب من شوقه ذكرا
This heart recalled in longing a remembrance
أتوعدني قيس ودون وعيدها
Does Qais threaten me? His threats are vain,
أكان الباهلي يظن أني
Did Al-Bahili think that I
إنك لاق بالمحصب من منى
You stand at Muzdalifah as if you are a proud man,
أعيني إلا تسعداني ألمكما
My eyes, you bring me no joy unless you gladden me, else your pain is mine,
إذا دمعت عيناك والشوق قائدن
When your eyes weep and longing leads you,
لعمري لقد سلمت لو أن جثوة
By my life! If a corpse
دعوت لهم أن يجعل الله خيرهم
You prayed that Allah make the best of them,
لو كنت مثلي يا خيار تعسفت
If you were like me, O Khayar, you would have been abused,
ألم تر أني يوم جو سويقة
Did you not see when on the day of Suwaqah
أهلكت مال الله في غير حقه
You squandered God's wealth unjustly
لحا الله ماء حنبل قيم له
God has created water, an upright palm tree beside it
ألم تر أنا وجدنا الضبيح
Have you not seen how we found the impetuous one
إن الذين استحلوا كل فاحشة
Those who made licit every abomination
فرعن وفرغن الهموم التي سمت
Their sorrows which soared to you subsided,
ألا استهزأت مني هنيدة أن رأت
Alas! Hinaydah scoffed at me when she saw me
فإني كما قالت نوار إن اجتلت
As Nawar said, if she inclines
ألم تذكروا يا آل مروان نعمة
O clan of Marwan, do you not remember the favor
تذكرت أين الجابرون قناتنا
I remembered where the rainmakers built our dam
إن أستطع منك الدنو فإنني
If I could seek closeness from you through flattery
بنو العم أدنى الناس منا قرابة
The sons of my paternal uncle are the closest of people to me in kinship
أباهل هل أنتم مغير لونكم
Abalhil, have you changed your colors?
من يأت عواما ويشرب عنده
Who comes to drinkers and drinks in their company
إن تمنع التمر من رازان مائرنا
If you deny the dates of Rāzān from our camels passing by,
وأنت للناس نور يستضاء به
You are a light for people, illuminated by you,
فإن تفخر بنا فلرب قوم
If you take pride in us, then many a tribe
ما إن أبو بشر ولا أبواهما
Neither the father of Bushr nor his parents
لا فضل إلا فضل أم على ابنها
There is no merit but a mother's merit over her son
بفي الشامتين الصخر إن كان مسني
In the slanderers' glee should the boulder strike me,
تقول ابنة الغوثي ما لك ههنا
The daughter of Al-Gawthi said, why are you here,
من الحاملات الحمد لما تكشفت
When she unveiled, unveiled her alluring charms,
أتأكل ميراث الحتات ظلامة
Do you feast on the inheritance of the vipers in darkness?
مضت سنة لم تبق مالا وإننا
A year has passed, leaving no wealth, yet we
لأدنو من أرض لأرضك إن دنت
I'll approach a land for your land, if hers
لم أنس إذ نوديت ما قال مالك
I did not forget when Malik called me out
ومسجونة قالت وقد سد زوجها
Imprisoned, she said - her husband had shut
يا أخت ناجبة ابن سامة إنني
O sister of the mourner, son of Samah
يا عجبا للعذارى يوم معقلة
O how strange are maidens on the day of Ma'qilah
وكانت أثافي قدرنا رأس بعلها
The pots of our fate had its head cut off
طويل عماد البيت تبني مجاشع
The pillar of the house builds affectionately
إني إلى خير البرية كلها
I have journeyed to the best of all mankind,
دعاني إلى جرجان والري دونه
Abu Khalid called me to Jurjan though the path to it was fraught with danger,
رفعت لهم صوت المنادي فأبصروا
I raised my voice to call them, and they saw
ورد الذي كادوا وما أزمعوا له
That which they had intended and planned against me,
ستمنع عبد الله ظلمي ونهشل
Abdullah's wrongs shall my people well prevent,
سأنعى ابن ليلى للذي راح بعده
I will lament the son of Layla for him who went after him
تمنى ابن مسعود لقائي سفاهة
The son of Mas'ud foolishly wished to meet me,
غيا لباهلة التي شقيت بنا
Curse the Bahila who have wronged us
ينام الطريد بعدها نومة الضحى
The fugitive sleeps his mid-morning nap
رأيت بني مروان يرفع ملكهم
يا ابن المراغة والهجاء إذا التقت
لقد بان للغاوي مفاخر أصبحت
لو بأبي جامع عرضت حاجتنا
لعمرك ما تجزي مفداة شقتي
لعمري لقد نبهت يا هند ميتا
تشمس يا ابن حري وأرتع
أأسلمتني للموت أمك هابل
وأطلس عسال وما كان صاحبا
ود جرير اللؤم لو كان عانيا
بئست لقوحا ذي العيال امتنحتما
صل يا جنيد الخير لله صولة
نصرنا يوم لاقونا عليهم
إذا كره الشغب الشقاق ووطوط ال
رأتني معد مصحرا فتناذرت
خلافة لم تكن غصبا مشورتها
تبكي المراغة بالرغام على ابنها
وحاجة لا يراها الناس أكتمها
إذا عض بالأحياء محل فإننا
ولولا بنو سعد ابن ضبة أصبحت
وجدنا نهشلا فضلت فقيما
متى تلق إبراهيم تعرف فضوله
أقول لنفس لا يجاد بمثلها
إذا ما بدا الحجاج للناس أطرقوا
يا ويح صبيتي الذين تركتهم
وعائذة التي كانت تميم
ألا إنما أودى شبابي وانقضى
أهلي فداؤك يا وكيع إذا بدا
غداة كسا أجناده البيض والقنا
متغطرفين وخندف من حولهم
من يك عن قيس بن عيلان سائلا
أنا ابن تميم لعاداتها
وباتت كدوداة الجواري وبعلها
لكل الداء بيطار وعلم
يا ابن ربيع هل رأيت أحدا
لقد عضت لئام بني فقيم
إذا ما كنت متخذا خليلا
لو كنت في الثأر الذي كنت طالبا
أأن أرعشت كفا أبيك وأصبحت
إليك بنفسي حين بعد حشاشةٍ
ومر بنا المختار مختار طيئ
أقامت ثلاثاً تبتغي الصلح نهشل
تضاحكت أن رأت شيباً تفرعني
إذا لاقى بنو مروان سلوا
لو جمعوا من الخلان ألفا
لولا أن تغار بني كليب
جاد الديار التي بالرمس خالية
قد كان بالعرق صيد لو قنعت به
ومن عجب الأيام والدهر أن ترى
لو أن حدراء تجزيني كما زعمت
أبني لجيم إنكم ألجمتم
إن الذي أعطى الرجال حظوظهم
إليك سبقت ابني فزارة بعدما
أناخ إليكم طالب طال ما نأت
أخذنا بالنجوم على كليب
لما أتانا المشفقون فأنذروا
إذا الأسد ماست في الحديد وسومت
ألم يك قتل عبد القيس ظلما
أصبنا بما لو أن سلمى أصابها
أبا حاتم قد كان عمك رامني
أرى السجن سلاني عن الروعة التي
طرقنا شفاء وهو يكعم كلبه
بحق امرئ أضحى أبوه ابن دارم
ستبلغ عني غدوة الريح أنها
ألا أيها القوم الذين أتاهم
سرى لك طيف من سليمة بعدما
أفاطم لا أنسى نعاس ولا سرى
إذ نحن نخبر بالحواجب بيننا
