1. May God not bless a people who drank
Nothing but unmixed wine they brought from Sejistan.

2. Hypocrites made lawful every abomination;
They were, lacking fear of God, confederates.

3. Was there no believer to warn them
Of a people's punishment when they disobeyed God?

4. How often nations disobeyed God, so He destroyed them
With wind, or drowned them in a flood!

5. When an evildoer leads them, what can a people do
Who encounter heroes when they try to conquer?

6. Would that my Lord tormented them and made them
An example, O Umm Hassân!

7. You see their coats of mail in war well-woven
Of links David gave Solomon.

8. These protected them in battle when they rode
Pure white steeds with excellent bodies.
