1. I stood still as a house of my tribe made me weep
Over the crying women in mourning

١. وَقَفتُ فَأَبكَتني بِدارٍ عَشيرَتي
عَلى رُزئِهِنَّ الباكِياتُ الحَواسِرُ

2. They went out in the morning like Indian swords and well-knitted coats of mail
Against death, and their death brought them to their fate

٢. غَدَوا كَسُيوفِ الهِندِ وُرّادَ حَومَةٍ
مِنَ المَوتِ أَعيا وِردَهُنَّ المَصادِرُ

3. The horsemen protected a harem and guarded
The house of death and spear-fight fiercely

٣. فَوارِسُ حامَوا عَن حَريمٍ وَحافَظوا
بِدارِ المَنايا وَالقَنا مُتَشاجِرُ

4. As if they went out under the awnings
To death, the roaring lions of the thicket

٤. كَأَنَّهُمُ تَحتَ الخَوافِقِ إِذ غَدَوا
إِلى المَوتِ أُسدُ الغابَتَينِ الهَواصِرُ

5. Had Salma undergone our grief
She would have collapsed, but `Amir endures grief

٥. فَلَو أَنَّ سَلمى نالَها مِثلُ رُزئِنا
لَهُدَّت وَلَكِن تَحمِلُ الرُزءَ عامِرُ
