1. We saw Bāhilīyah not sated
With vengeance though her soul for it was hung

2. We brought to her from Mu‘āwiyah’s tribe
The mother, covering each chick fledgling

3. We cleared Khuwaylah’s spite from Jaḥdar
Though stuck in her throat and she was choked

4. Whenever Ibn Mismar was recalled to her
Tears poured profusely down her cheek

5. The chill of youth was pleasant for her
Though in her burning breast was not bespoken

6. To her came eighty bearded heads
From the slain and severed bodies taken

7. Heaped at Qandābil were their corpses
And heads cleaved with each joint crackéd

8. Cleaved from the fortress wherein they hied
Many a slain and crushed victim inside

9. No ordeal but our loyalty tried
When we at Qandābil did override

10. Them in their walls by our swords so sharp
And deadly keen spears each wall to rip

11. If Ibn Arṭāh by his death gives cure
And tears of joy from their eyes drip

12. None of Muhalhil's clan our blow spared
With every sharp Yemeni blade drawn

13. Only their women left alive there
Wailing naked by corpses wan

14. Those our spears made lawful in troth
To whomever would wed them, divorced they are not
