1. With disheveled hair its locks have coiled
Like a frightened ostrich chased by hunters
١. شُعثاً شَوازِبَ قَد طَوى أَقرابَها
كَرُّ الطِرادِ لَواحِقُ الآطالِ
2. It refuses to spend out of miserliness
After squandering between sorrow and sands
٢. بِأُلاكَ تَمنَعُ أَن تُنَفِّقَ بَعدَما
قَصَّعتَ بَينَ حُزونَةٍ وَرِمالِ
3. With them we repel the worries of every repentant man
And you see for it folds in every expanse
٣. وَبِهِنَّ نَدفَعُ كَربَ كُلُّ مُثَوِّبٍ
وَتَرى لَها خُدَداً بِكُلِّ مَجالِ
4. I have built houses in glory
Not desiring to demolish them
٤. إِنّي بَنى لي دارِمٌ عادِيَّةً
في المَجدِ لَيسَ أَرومُها بِمُزالِ
5. And my father who welcomed the dogs by naming them
While the horses underneath their armors clanked
٥. وَأَبي الَّذي وَرَدَ الكِلابَ مُسَوِّماً
وَالخَيلُ تَحتَ عَجاجِها المِنجالِ
6. Their anklets clinking as they walked
Piling up the valley with their cargo
٦. تَمشي كَواتِفُها إِذا ما أَقبَلَت
بِالدارِعينَ تَكَدُّسَ الأَوعالِ
7. Their necklaces clamor as they head to battle
The war party returns with abundant spoils
٧. قَلِقاً قَلائِدُها تُقادُ إِلى العِدى
رُجُعَ الغَذِيِّ كَثيرَةَ الأَنفالِ
8. Their mounts slowed by the fodder they consumed
Walking like toddlers learning to crawl
٨. أَكَلَت دَوابِرَها الإِكامُ فَمَشيُها
مِمّا وَجينَ كَمِشيَةِ الأَطفالِ
9. So when they panic at a battlecry
And sprint between lowlands and summits
٩. فَكَأَنَّهُنَّ إِذا فَزِعنَ لِصارِخٍ
وَشَرَعنَ بَينَ سَوافِلٍ وَعَوالِ
10. Shaking the bridles of resolute steeds
Like the trunks of Khaybar or the trunks of Awl
١٠. وَهَزَزنَ مِن جَزَعٍ أَسِنَّةَ صُلَّبٍ
كَجُزوعِ خَيبَرَ أَو جُزوعِ أَوالِ
11. Birds hastily taking flight with stupidity
Meeting the cold and crushed by the north wind
١١. طَيرٌ تُبادِرُ رائِحاً ذا غَبيَةٍ
بَرداً وَتَسحَقَهُ خَريقَ شَمالِ
12. Their bridles caught in a tangled acacia
With tall, slender trunks
١٢. عَلِقَت أَعِنَّتُهُنَّ في مَجرومَةٍ
سُحُقٍ مُشَذَّبَةِ الجُذوعِ طِوالِ
13. Their grim faces overwhelming us
On the day of the meeting of heroes
١٣. تَغشى مُكَلَّلَةً عَوابِسُها بِنا
يَومَ اللِقاءِ أَسِنَّةَ الأَبطالِ
14. Grazing the meadows around us when they set out
Their trotting enlivening waterfalls
١٤. تَرعى الزَعانِفَ حَولَنا بِقِيادِها
وَغُدُوُّهُنَّ مُرَوَّحَ التَشلالِ
15. The day Aamir advanced
Before the kindled riding beasts
١٥. يَومَ الشُعَيبَةِ يَومَ أَقدَمَ عامِرٌ
قُدّامَ مُشعِلَةِ الرُكوبِ غَوالِ
16. And you see their tether ropes flutter as they gallop
Like the flocking of doves to their nests
١٦. وَتَرى مُراخيها يَثوبُ لِحاقُها
وِردَ الحَمامِ حَوائِرَ الأَوشالِ
