1. To the son of Abi al-Walid I have returned my mounts,
And they went back exhausted and worn.
١. إِلى اِبنِ أَبي الوَليدِ عَدَت رِكابي
وَراحَت وَهيَ جائِلَةُ الضِفارِ
2. To the ruler in whose hands is virtue
Above other great hands,
٢. إِلى الحَكَمِ الَّذي بِيَدَيهِ فَضلٌ
عَلى الأَيدي مِنَ القُحَمِ الكِبارِ
3. The warriors consult him for his glory,
Leading the tips of spears seeking his bounties,
٣. تَؤُمُّ بِهِ الحُداةُ عَلى وَجاها
رُؤوسَ البيدِ سائِلَةَ الذَفاري
4. And you have in you a spirit of noble king,
A father to you like the bursting light of day.
٤. وَكائِن فيكَ مِن مَلِكٍ هُمامٍ
أَبٍ لَكَ مِثلِ مُنصَدِعِ النَهارِ
5. So whoever picks you among the sons of Nizar,
His hands have fallen on the best choice.
٥. فَمَن يَختَركَ مِن وَلَدَي نِزارٍ
فَقَد وَقَعَت يَداهُ عَلى الخِيارِ
6. Giving thoroughbred steeds marked as gifts,
Along with good fortune, virgins and young ladies.
٦. عَلى المُعطي الجِيادِ مُسَوَّماتٍ
مَعَ البُختِ النَجائِبِ وَالعَذاري
7. I saw your hands better than the hands of a generous man,
And I reckon all others beneath your running.
٧. رَأَيتُ يَدَيكَ خَيرَ يَدَي جَوادٍ
وَأَعيا دونَ جَريِكَ كُلُّ جارِ
8. A generous man who buys praise with money,
While your generosity has gone beyond commerce.
٨. كَريمٌ يَشتَري بِالمالِ حَمداً
مَكارِمَ قَد غَلَونَ عَلى التِجارِ
9. We found the pillar of your house among Quraysh
To be of great height, lofty pillars.
٩. وَجَدنا سَمكَ بَيتِكَ في قُرَيشٍ
طَويلَ السَمكِ مُرتَفِعَ السَواري
10. And whoever your efforts seek, his hands
On a day of trial reach some heights.
١٠. وَمَن تَطلُب مَساعيكُم يَداهُ
إِلى بَعضِ العُلى يَومَ الفَخارِ
11. I saw kingship slip off Uthman and move
Its belongings to you, abode of settlement.
١١. رَأَيتُ المُلكَ عَن عُثمانَ حَلَّت
عُراهُ إِلَيكُمُ دارَ القَرارِ
12. And Aan called and you answered him
And freed his hands from fetters.
١٢. وَعانٍ قَد دَعا فَأَجَبتُموهُ
وَأَطلَقتُم يَدَيهِ مِنَ الإِسارِ
13. When death hovers around catastrophes,
And people because of it are in distress and misery,
١٣. إِذا ما المَوتُ حَدَّقَ بِالمَنايا
وَكانَ القَومُ مِنهُ عَلى أُوارِ
