We sought refuge with Najran the Yemeni and his people,

سمونا لنجران اليماني وأهله

1. We sought refuge with Najran the Yemeni and his people,
And Najran is a land whose valleys were never trodden by men,

١. سَمَونا لِنَجرانِ اليَماني وَأَهلِهِ
وَنَجرانُ أَرضٌ لَم تُدَيَّث مُقاوِلُه

2. Amidst the varying voices you can hear it echoing,
Like the cooing of pigeons whose warbling cannot be understood,

٢. بِمُختَلِفِ الأَصواتِ تَسمَعُ وَسطَهُ
كَرِزِّ القَطا لا يَفقَهُ الصَوتَ قائِلُه

3. It is up to us, its features cannot be recognized amidst it,
The tumult of its many tribes from every quarter,

٣. لَنا أَمرُهُ لا تُعرَفُ البُلقُ وَسطَهُ
كَثيرُ الوَغى مِن كُلِّ حَيٍّ قَبائِلُه

4. As if amongst them the daughters of Harith singing,
Shy oryx does not reveal their veils,

٤. كَأَنَّ بَناتِ الحارِثِيِّينَ وَسطَهُم
ظِباءُ صَريمٍ لَم تُفَرَّج غَياطِلُه

5. Whenever their camp comes to a halt, its first men kindle a fire with it,
Lighting up the high crags,

٥. إِذا حانَ مِنهُ مَنزِلٌ أَوقَدَت بِهِ
لِأُخراهُ في أَعلى اليَفاعِ أَوائِلُه

6. The open land remains shadowed by its zigzagging,
And the torrent's pools roar loudly,

٦. تَظَلُّ بِهِ الأَرضُ الفَضاءُ مُعَضِّلاً
وَتَجهَرُ أَسدامَ المِياهِ قَوابِلُه

7. You can see the birds in peace have secured for themselves,
Abodes of lofty acacia trees amidst abundant forage,

٧. تَرى عافِياتِ الطَيرِ قَد وَثَّقَت لَها
بِشِبعٍ مِنَ السَخلِ العِتاقِ مَنازِلُه

8. When they are panicked they shake the standard of Ibn Habes,
And call for the generous one whose abode and signs are sublime,

٨. إِذا فَزِعوا هَزّوا لِواءَ اِبنِ حابِسٍ
وَنادَوا كَريماً خَيمُهُ وَشَمائِلُه

9. He hastened with help for his clan and reached,
The protected land of the virtuous over the one who rivals him,

٩. سَعى بِتِراتٍ لِلعَشيرَةِ أَدرَكَت
حَفيظَةَ ذي فَضلٍ عَلى مَن يُفاضِلُه

10. Thus did he attain more glory, stature and goodness,
And the doer of good meets good,

١٠. فَأَدرَكَها وَاِزدادَ مَجداً وَرِفعَةً
وَخَيراً وَأَحظى الناسِ بِالخَيرِ فاعِلُه

11. I see the people of Najran as planets at dawn,
And amongst them achieves every aspiration,

١١. أَرى أَهلَ نَجرانَ الكَواكِبَ بِالضُحى
وَأَدرَكَ فيهِم كُلَّ وِترٍ يُحاوِلُه

12. And he brought morning to the people of Al-Jawf, and Al-Jawf feels secure,
With the likes of eternity while fate brings to it tribulations,

١٢. وَصَبَّحَ أَهلَ الجَوفِ وَالجَوفُ آمِنٌ
بِمِثلِ الدَبا وَالدَهرُ جَمٌّ بَلابِلُه

13. And on Hamdan came a day that brought them,
Misfortune of misfortunes both evident and concealed,

١٣. فَظَلَّ عَلى هَمدانَ يَومٌ أَتاهُمُ
بِنَحسِ نُحوسٍ ظَهرُهُ وَأَصائِلُه

14. And Kindah did not leave them one protected,
Or a refuge but their refuges were violated,

١٤. وَكِندَةُ لَم يَترُك لَهُم ذا حَفيظَةٍ
وَلا مَعقِلاً إِلّا أُبيحَت مَعاقِلُه
