1. Quraysh mourns over you, Abu Hafs,
When you were befallen by strife, in the Levant,

2. When widows and orphans were killed,
And horses were defeated,

3. None like Abu Hafs has died in battle
Nor for a needy seeker of good has died like Talib

4. How many valiant cavaliers shouted your name,
Until they tasted victory

5. You were scorned, O clans of Taym and others
Over the losses of both Khazraj and Mudar

6. The most generous when their branches multiplied
And most affluent when their protector stumbled

7. Weep over the calamity of Abu Hafs and his companion
Abu Muadh when misfortunes befell them

8. A war, once kindled, he would consummate it
When he sired it, the virile stud

9. How many cowards were led by panic unto fighting
Had it not been for you, they would not have endured

10. Days of loyalty which you endured
Days of cavalier, and days of migration

11. O people! Weep not for one
Who accepted fate with satisfaction

12. His hands were hands that wielded swords for protection
And rain that makes trees grow

13. They ask the horses about him during battle
And the valiant, the people’s pots and stones

14. Who will kill hunger after the martyr’s son
And who by the sword will kill the clan’s ram when it charges
