1. A mourner rose and said to a lamenting woman
Whose eyes overflowed with copious tears:

2. The wounded man was patient until the sharp swords
Carried him to the mercy of Allah.

3. So he became, among the people with whom was Muhammad,
Their brother, and whoever joins them is safe.

4. They were rewarded for the secrets in their hearts
With the reward the Knower of secrets, the All-knowing, gave them.

5. To the highest chamber, Muhammad's companion,
Staying there for ever, not departing.

6. Let the horses of raiders weep for the wounded man
And the day when identical stars are seen.

7. So Allah has land which His right hand has made fertile,
And the attacking enemy was routed on it.

8. If cattle understood anything, they would weep for him,
And beasts would weep for the wounded man.
