1. The enemy rejoiced and Sa'd grieved
At the tomb of a valiant youth in Al-Qa'qa'
١. لَقَد سَرَّ العَدُوَّ وَساءَ سَعداً
عَلى القَعقاعِ قَبرِ فَتىً هِجانِ
2. Will not Sa'd's sons weep for their gallant one
For the days of magnanimity and spears?
٢. أَلا تَبكي بَنو سَعدٍ فَتاها
لِأَيّامِ السَماحَةِ وَالطِعانِ
3. A gallant one for great deeds if they pained
And for cleaving war equipped and ready
٣. فَتاها لِلعَظائِمِ إِن أَلَمَّت
وَلِلحَربِ المُشَمِّرَةِ العَوانِ
4. As if the grave the day he stayed in it
Contained the breast of a polished Yemeni
٤. كَأَنَّ اللَحدَ يَومَ أَقامَ فيهِ
تَضَمَّنَ صَدرَ مَصقولٍ يَماني
5. A youth whose hands were with every virtue
When fists were clenched, flowing open-handed
٥. فَتىً كانَت يَداهُ بِكُلِّ عُرفٍ
إِذا جَمَدَ الأَكُفُّ تَدَفَّقانِ
