1. If you were to meet the one whose epithet you bear,
And there emerged from you, O father of cubs, radiance,
١. وَلَو لَقيتَ الَّذي تُكنى بِكُنيَتِهِ
فَاِسطاعَ مِنكَ أَبا الأَشبالِ لَاِنجَحَرا
2. O son of caliphs, verily the horses have known
When they were roused against their champions,
٢. يا اِبنَ الخَلائِفِ إِنَّ الخَيلَ قَد عَلِمَت
إِذا أَثارَت عَلى أَبطالِها القَتَرا
3. That you are the first of them in stabbing, and the most skillful
Behind the heavily-armed, when they moaned,
٣. أَنَّكَ أَوَّلُهُم طَعناً وَأَعطَفُهُم
وَراءَ مُرهَقِ أُخراهُم إِذا جَأَرا
4. And [you are] enduring, through you, were it not for what your hands wrought
Against the horses and champions, [he] would not have endured,
٤. وَصابِرٍ بِكَ لَولا ما رَأى صَنَعَت
يَداكَ بِالخَيلِ وَالأَبطالِ ما صَبَرا
5. Indeed, al-Walid, Abul 'Abbas, bequeathed to him
Of the noble traits, including innate excellence,
٥. إِنَّ الوَليدَ أَبا العَبّاسِ أَورَثَهُ
مِنَ المَكارِمِ مِنها الرُجَّحُ الكُبَرا
6. And a palm like the basin of a well, copiously watered,
Which drives away from the one who comes to it hunger and leanness,
٦. وَجَفنَةً مِثلَ حَوضِ البِئرِ مُترَعَةً
تَطرُدُ عَمَّن أَتاها الجوعَ وَالخَصَرا
7. Hollow in the shin, filled, garlanded
With the waterbag straps - you see around it turbidity
٧. جَوفاءَ شيزِيَّةً مَلأى مُكَلَّلَةً
مِنَ السَنامِ تَرى مِن حَولِها عَكَرا
8. From the men and youths who have been carried
Girt, and not girt like the mindless camels.
٨. مِنَ الرِجالِ وَأَيفاعٍ قَدِ اِحتُمِلوا
مُؤَزَّرينَ وَمِثلَ البَهمِ ما اِتَّزَرا
9. Both of them sated, its comers and goers,
The petitioners to it and the early risers to it.
٩. كِلاهُما مُشبَعٌ رَيّانُ وارِدُهُ
الأَيِّبونَ إِلَيها وَالَّذي بَكَرا
10. Verily, generosity is the companion of al-'Abbas - he allied himself to it
And munificence - they are brothers who have drowned mankind in freshness
١٠. إِنَّ النَدى صاحِبَ العَبّاسِ حالَفَهُ
وَالجودَ هُم إِخوَةٌ قَد أَغرَقوا البَشَرا
11. Hastening with their hands benevolence to its obtainer
Which the mornings and munificence never flag.
١١. حَثياً بِأَيديهِمِ المَعروفَ نائِلُهُ
تَفتُرُ عَنهُ الصَبا وَالجودُ ما فَتَرا
12. Verily we have come to you when there settled upon our land
From the years, ailments that split the rocks,
١٢. إِنّا أَتَيناكَ إِذ حَلَّت بِساحَتِنا
مِنَ السِنينَ عَضوضٌ تَفلِقُ الحَجَرا
13. Seeking you as the rain is sought when it falls,
Its harbinger with life by which he enlivens the trees,
١٣. مُنتَجِعيكَ اِنتِجاعَ الغَيثِ إِذ وَقَعَت
أَشراطُهُ بِحَياً يُحيِي بِهِ الشَجَرا
14. Verily us and you are like the bucket which fell
Into the hands of one drawing water, who praised, and was unaware,
١٤. إِنّا وَإِيّاكَ كَالدَلوِ الَّتي وَقَعَت
عَلى يَدَي مائِحٍ بِالحَمدِ ما شَعَرا
15. Of one drawing who did not find a bucket and lowered it
Upon him except from praise which appeared.
١٥. مِن ماتِحٍ لَم يَجِد دَلواً فَيورِدَها
عَلَيهِ إِلّا مِنَ الحَمدِ الَّذي ظَهَرا
16. O son of al-Walid, do not the people know
That you and the sword are submission for whoever disbelieved?
١٦. يا اِبنَ الوَليدِ أَلَيسَ الناسُ قَد عَلِموا
أَنَّكَ وَالسَيفَ إِسلامٌ لِمَن كَفَرا
