1. She who glanced at you with fluttering eyes
Glanced at you with eyes like mine, aglow
١. إِنَّ الَّتي نَظَرَت إِلَيكَ بِفادِرٍ
نَظَرَت إِلَيكَ بِمِثلِ عَينَي جُؤذُرِ
2. While Sanaan slept, his mother woke him
For the howl of a shepherd girl without promise
٢. وَسَنانَ نامَ فَأَيقَظَتهُ أُمُّهُ
لِفُواقِ راعِيَةٍ بِعَهدٍ مُقفِرِ
3. No day like yours, day you set out
A day whose clouds dispersed, raining not
٣. لا مِثلَ يَومِكَ يَومَ حَومَلَ إِذ أَتى
يَومٌ يُفَرِّجُ غَيمُهُ لَم يُمطِرُ
4. When al-Walid reaches you, let him drink
From the edge of the breast, at the bending palm
٤. وَإِذا الوَليدُ بَلَغتِهِ بِيَ فَاِشرَبي
طَرَفَ السِنانِ عَلى وَتينِ المَنحَرِ
5. I wish I could have reached you
The day I left Iraq the fertile
٥. إِيّاهُ كُنتُ أَرَدتُ لَو بَلَّغتِني
يَومَ اِرتَحَلتُ مِنَ العِراقِ الأَزوَرِ
6. O best of those a she-camel carried
With persistent rider, tiring the she-camel
٦. يا خَيرَ مَن رَفَعَت إِلَيهِ مَطِيَّةٌ
بِمُطَرَّدٍ جَهَدَ المَطِيَّةَ مُضمَرِ
7. How often have I traveled by night
Under a starry sky or roar of lightning
٧. كَم أَدلَجَت بي سَخوَةٌ مِن لَيلَةٍ
شَهباءَ أَو سَمِعَت زَئيرَ المُخدِرِ
8. Restless when her saddle-straps shook
Restless atop the arched litter
٨. قَلِقَت إِذا اِضطَرَبَت بِها أَنساعُها
قَلَقَ المَحالَةِ فَوقَ مَتنِ المِحوَرِ
9. She thinks her shadow is a demon
Shying though she did not shy
٩. وَتَظَلُّ تَحسِبَ ظِلِّها شَيطانَةً
وَتَخالُ نافِرَةً وَإِن لَم تَنفِرِ
10. A piebald mingled with wild asses
Purebred stock and runaways
١٠. خَرقاءُ خالَطَ أُمَّها مِن عَوهَجٍ
وَالأَرحَبِيَّةِ ضَربُها وَالأَدعَرِ
11. No boy's stick, though he pursue,
Can touch her shin's twisted hair
١١. لا تَستَطيعُ عَصا الغِلامِ وَإِن سَعى
مَسّاً لِساقِ وَظيفِها المُصعَنفِرِ
12. Al-Walid, heir to Muhammad
Buys all virtues with his virtues
١٢. إِنَّ الوَليدَ وَلِيُّ عَهدِ مُحَمَّدٍ
كُلَّ المَكارِمِ بِالمَكارِمِ يَشتَري
13. Seek no other who walked my path
If you meet him at Qarqar
١٣. لا تَطلُبي بي غَيرَهُ مِمَّن مَشى
إِن أَنتِ ناقَ لَقيتِهِ بِالقَرقَرِ
14. Travel ahead, for she is readied
For his hands, camel of the Greatest Imam
١٤. سيري أَمامَكِ إِنَّها قَد مُكِّنَت
لِيَدَيهِ راحِلَةُ الإِمامِ الأَكبَرِ
