اذا دعاها الروض واطباها
When the meadow calls her and woos her,
باغي الصلاح تقال عثرته
The seeker of righteousness, his stumbles are said
تبدل مرهف العزمات حزما
Roaming desires once headstrong
مقامك الأشرف المحسود من مضر
Your eminent and envied abode, when the high-born vie,
نصبو القنا الطعان فخلته
They planted spears, their sharp tips upright
لئن خالت نوى قذف شطون
If she was cruel with her beloved,
لام على العذر ويا ربما
No blame on laying reasons bare although
رويدكم فالفتح يصغره القدر
Have patience, for victory belittles hardship
طربت وما دارت علي زجاجة
I was delighted though no wine was poured for me,
جلبت الخيل تمرح بالعوالي
You brought the horses galloping in the meadows
خفضا لا موت الا بأجل
Lower your voices, death comes only at its appointed time
عليها ذمام الله من كل ذاعر
Protected by God from every slanderer,
بحيث دسوت المجد زيدت سكينة

لمعت كتلويح الرداء المسبل
Her veil fluttered like a waving sleeve,
تود الجحاجيح من خندف
The tents wish for protection from Khandaf
لله درك من مقارن همة
Your worth, what a match for one with high resolve
جعلت من الحدثان أحصن أدرع
I have been made of armor the most impregnable
لم ألق مستكبرا إلا تحول لي
I have not met an arrogant man except that it was shown to me
ماذا أقول إذا الرواة ترنموا
What shall I say when the narrators recited
أقول وقد ضاقت قوافي مدائحي
I say, though my ode's measures are cramped
يسوس الأمر وجبته ضجاج
The affair worries with its clamor
يا آل جعفر الفياض جودكم
O House of generous Jafar
قد شاع أن تميما وهي من شهدت
It is well known that Tameem, who boasts
تميس الدولة الغراء تيها
The auspicious state wanders astray
يجلو الهموم إذا تدجو مذاهبها
Sorrows fade away in his kind compassion
مودته عهد وصوب بنانه
His affection is a covenant and the excellence of his character
ليهن الرعايا والمناقب والعلى
Let the subjects rejoice and the attributes and the heights
يرى المخلصون الغر أن فناءهم
The devoted see their death as life
العز والنشب المجموع بينهما
Glory and youth when brought together
يا لامحا شبح المسف الأكحل
O fading specter of the black knight
إذا ما اجتهاد المرء لم يك نافعا
If a man's effort avails him naught
يا عاقدا وضن الجمال البزل
O you who tied the knots of perfect beauty,
لتهن قصور المجد زيدت جلالة
The palaces of glory are made more majestic
يبيت الوحيد الفرد من هو وال
The lone, the single sleeps, who is he and where is his family?
تباريت والشهر الحرام ففقته
You contended and the sacred month you ruptured
أسد الدين والنداء لغيرا
The defender of faith and answerer to every call
جلا الله أدجان الأسى وتبلجت
God has dispelled the sorrows' shadows, and the dawn
أقول لصحبي والهموم كأنها
I say to my friends, while worries are like
يبدل الليل ضحى من بشره
The night changes the morning with its good tidings
قدمت قدوم الصبح من بعد غيهب
You came like the dawn after night's darkness
يشرق النادي إذا حل به
The club shines when he arrives
ما غاب باهر مجد عم شارقه
No abiding glory's radiance is lost
وفي حشية دست المجد ذو طرب
In the palm of glory lies exultant pleasure,
لا تركنن إلى أخلاق غانية
Do not rely on the morals of a debauched woman
قل للحجيج ومن أضحت منازله
Tell the pilgrims, and those whose homes
تفوق السيف والوط
The supremacy of the sword and counsel,
إذا كنت مضعوفا بأدنى فراقكم
If I am weakened by your absence,
يفضل الصارم في عزمته
The firm one excels in his resolve
جانبا لومي وخافا لددي
Turn from blaming me, and fear my wrath,
إذا المرء لم يرزق مع الأيد همة
Roaming without ambition in open spaces
لا تنكري شعثي ولو حسبت
Do not deny my disheveled state even if it's judged
ولما التقينا والمعالي مضيئة
When we met and glory shone bright
حماكم إله العرش من كل نبوة
God protects you from all harm
يلين في القول ويحنو على
His words are gentle, bending to
فضلت تهاني الأيام طرا
You have surpassed the best wishes of days, sublime
وإني لمثن ما تبوج بارق
Though bright lightning flashes from no cloud
إذا نعمة الإنسان لم تك قربة
If man's blessing brings him not near
تراب الشعب كافور
The people's soil is camphor
إني لأفكر في علاك فأنثني
Roaming your heights, I bend, perplexed
من مبلغ سلف الأجواد إذ سبقوا
I am a messenger of the generosity of the noble ones, for they preceded
الخطب أكبر في النفوس وأعظم
The sorrows in souls are greater and more sublime
تعنفني في شرب كأسي ضلالة
You chide me for drinking my cup misguidedly
العز حيث البلدة الزوراء
Glory is where the radiant city lies,
رعى الله مجدا صاحبيا تنقلت
Allah has preserved the glory of my companion
احذر الهزل وجانب أهله
Avoid jesters and shun their company
أما اذا سلم الامام الأعظم
When the Greatest Imam is safe
قد أطمع الناس كفي عن هجائهم
People's greed made me stop criticizing them
اذا شوركت في حال بدون
If you get lost in a bleak state,
أقول لصحبي حين أجهشت العلى
I say to my friends when adversity overwhelms
زرت الامامين عن قلب طويته
You visited the two Imams with a heart that was folded,
يا للصوارم والرماح الذبل
O swords and spears with bent tips,
وما يدفع المقدور حزم وانما
No resolution repels destiny's decree,
وفقير عصف المحل به
A poor man whom fate has blown about
لم لا أتيته على الرماح اذا
Wonder
ما طاب شيء في الزمان لسامع
Nothing sounded good to a listener
تمنى مقامي من تميم كليبها
I wish I could stay with the tribe of Tamim
تدل عليه عبقة هاشمية
A Hashimite fragrance hints of him
أبى الله الا ما تريد فكن له
God decrees as He wills, so be content with His will
دعوت الذي أرسى ثيرا بحوله
I called upon the one who set up a tent with his family
حفلت بما شادت قريش من العلى
I rejoiced at what Quraysh built up on high
تفر صنوف العيب عن نيل مجده
Faults flee his glory, fearing his perfect traits,
جزيت نجيب الدين خيرا وانني
You have done well, O noble Al-Najeeb, and I
صحا القلب من حب الرجاء وغودرت
The heart awoke from the love of hope and its wounds healed,
تمارح أنضاء السرى عجرفية
The companions of nightly revels act pompous,
تحوي القلوب له مكاسر لطفه
Hearts contain his gentle ways,
يقر بعيني أن أجشمها السرى
It pleases my eye to stain it with bloodshed
العيد يوم يسر الناس مقدمه
The feast is a day that brings joy to people upon its arrival
تدل عليه عبقة هاشمية
A Hashimite fragrance points to him,
اذا سل سيف الرأي من غمد حزمه
If the sword of opinion is unsheathed from the scabbard of his determination
أبى الهم أن يعتاد صدري وناصري
The sorrows refused to grow accustomed to my heart and my defender
فقدتك فقد الشمس عند مضلة
I lost you like the sun lost in eclipse,
تميس جياد الخيل حتى كأنما
The horses gallop as though they sense
ملأ العصر بل الدهر علا
He filled the age, nay the epoch, with glory
شكت صهوات الخيل والسمر والظبى
The horses complained of the night-journey and the ostriches,
وفرقة ما يعاد عليك صعب
The parting of what can be restored to you is hard,
وأحلاف مجد موجفين إلى العلى
With oaths of glorious might ascending on high,
هنيئا لعلياء المراتب أنها
Congratulations to the eminent Alia
أبى الله أن تمسي همومي صواحبي
My Lord has decreed that my worries shall not be my companions
اذا لم أجد مصغيا للحدي
If I do not find a keen listener
طوت ما طوت في سهل أرض ووعرها
She folded what she folded on the plain and rugged land
عجزت فما لي حيلة في هواكم
Roses are red, violets are blue
صنو النبي رأيت قافيتي
The Prophet's manners I saw my rhyme
أظن القوافي ساورتها صبابة
I think rhymes have been adorned by a youth
إذا ما رواق الحرب أظلم نقعه
When the darkness of war overwhelms its gloom,
خليفة الله مالي كلما بسطت
The viceroy of Allah, why is it that whenever
إذا شرفت قدر الرجال مراتب
When power exalts the ranks of men
ناصر الدين والسحاب إذا غا
When the clouds depart, the living bid farewell
أجأ وسلمى أم بلاد الزاب
Is it Auga and Salma, or the country of Zaab,
ذريني وأهوالي نفر ونلتقي
Leave me be with my terrors that flee, and we will meet
دعوت الله رب العرش علما
I called upon God, Lord of the Mighty Throne, knowing
لا تنكرن لطرف أنت راكبه
here is the English translation of the Arabic poem:
حي المهابة والندى قد أربيا
The awe and dew have clothed
وإني وإن كف الأسى غرب مقولي
Though grief's gloom has waned, and my complaining ceased,
ألا حبذا مسعى تميم بن خندف
How excellent was the effort of Tameem son of Khandaf
أأهجع أم آوي إلى لين مرقد
Shall I lie down to rest or seek the softness of a couch
أود ولي من شيمة المجد عاصم
I wish that I possessed the traits of glory, my protector,
بقيت ولا زلت بك النعل أنني
I remain still, my slippers unmoving, though I
تمنى مقامي والمطالع ضلة
My abode and the rising of the stars have gone astray
أي الخطوب من الزمان أزل
What periods of youth from time have passed,
شكرا لدهري بالضمير وبالفم
My thanks to fate for giving me, in mind and mouth,
لمن جيرة دون اللوى والشقائق
For those with a neighbor below Al-Lawaa and Al-Shaqaa'iq
كأن بلاد الله مما أجنه
It is as if the lands of Allah that I roam
كفي مقالك عن لومي وتفنيدي
Your reproach and censure of me are enough,
أجل ما رمت في آت مقتبل
The greatest hope I harbor for the future
وقى الله أستار العلى من خزيمة
May Allah protect the pillars of nobility from dishonor,
رأت جم المآثر من نزار
She saw the splendor of Nizar's feats
أقول لقلب هاجه لاعج الهوى
I say to a heart its passion inflamed, desire has maddened it
ولما تراءت كعبة البيت كعبة
When the Kaaba of the house appeared as a Kaaba
الق الحدائج ترع الضمر القود
The earnest seeker swiftly attains his quest
لقد علمت زوراء دجلة أنني
I knew that the falsity of the Tigris
أرادت جوارا بالعراق فلم تطق
She wanted Iraq as her neighbor, but lacked the patience
أقم يا حسامي في صوانك واهجم
Rise up, my sword, in your sheath and attack!
خذوا من ذمامي عدة للعواقب
Take from my reins the means for the consequences,
يا خالد الدولة لا يعطي
O Khaled, of everlasting kingdom, gives
بنو المظفر والأيام شاهدة
The tribe of al-Muzaffar, time bears witness,
هو في ناديه طود راسخ
He is steadfast and resolute in his principles
أذنت لك العلياء نازحها
The virtuous have allowed you their virtues,
جزى الله عني من ذؤابة هاشم
May Allah reward me for the virtues of Hashim's clan,
صلت منه بصقيل الصفح مطرور الشباة
I am descended from one whose burnished blade is keened,
بقيت لكل مكرمة وبأس
For every generous deed and valor
احب سجايا الخير غرا كأنها
I love the facets of goodness appearing
يا لقومي من تيمي دعوة
O my people, my tribe, I call upon you
هنيئا للمناقب والمعالي
Congratulations to virtues and nobility
تنبو الظبى والقنا حينا وآونة
The friends and camels set out at times and intervals,
شكوا أشمس أنت قمر
They doubted you were a sun, you are a moon
ألفتك سراء على الأين في العلى
I found you a secret in the heights though far
إذا مرض اليمين أبو علي
When Abu Ali's right hand fell ill,
طربت قوافي الشعر حيث يقودها
The rhymes of poetry were enchanting as he led them,
يا راكبا يقطع الفيافي
O rider cutting through the empty desert
هبني كتمت لواعج البرحاء
The anguish I hide bursts forth,
يا بهاء الدهر والدي
O jewel of the age and religion
واني لمطواع الصمات ومنطقي
Though I keep silent, my lips do not betray
زار الخيال بخيلا مثل مرسله
The imagination visited a miser like its messenger
هل للزمان وقد جلت جرائمه
Has time, though its crimes have accumulated,
مظفر الدين والنداء لذي
My refuge in faith and my call is to he
واني على همي بعصري وأهله
I bear my concerns in my time and among my people
تناط أيادي الله منه وعنده
The hands of God aid and guard him,
واني وان لم يدرك الشعر وصفه
Though poetry fails to describe his merit
وراءك أقوال الوشاة الفواجر
Behind you are the words of scandalous slanderers,
نعمت صباحيا يا بن عم محمد
You blessed my morning, O son of Muhammad's uncle
بهاء الدين فارس كل فضل
Bahaa al-Din, knight of all excellence
أقرب من قولك يا عمرو
You are closer than your words, O Amr
لرواة شعري من مدائحه
For the reciters of my poetry from among my eulogists
لما غدا بهروز متقيا
When Bahroz became devout
هنيئا لمجموع المناقب والعلى
Congratulations to the one endowed with merits and highest rank
نازلت همي وهو فارس بهمة

كيف الرقاد ولات حين رقاد
How can I sleep when you are not there?
اذا اغبرت فجاج الأرض محلا
If the land becomes dusty and turbid
خليلي أما الحلم عني فعازب
My beloved, wisdom has left me
ثبت الحبى لا يستفز أناته
His resolve is steadfast, not stirred to impatience
غدا الدين من فرط المسرة باسما
Tomorrow religion will out of excessive joy
اذا حاولت وخز الضلوع وجيعة
If you try to pierce my ribs, the pain
ولما التقينا والثناء مع النوى
When we met and praise mingled with purpose
عليك ذمام الله ما ذر شارق
The reins of God are upon you as long as a morning star shines
وما فاخرته في المضاء قواضب
Neither the bright dawn with its rays
إذا أسبل الصوب اليميني أنبتت
If the right showers poured down
يا ساري الليل عواما بلجته
O night sailor floating in its darkness
وأبلج سمح من ذؤابة خندف
With open-handed generosity and kindly disposition
فضلت التهاني بالمراتب والعلى
You chose to give greetings and rank of high stature,
جلا سدف المفارق نور شيب
The light of white hair shone, dispelling the gloom of night,
بهاء الدين دعوة ذي ولاء
O Bahā’ al-Dīn, a call of loyalty
يزيد في عز الفتى ذله
A young man's dignity increases his humiliation
لا أوحش الله من أنوار منقبة
The light from Minqabah's lamps is never dimmed
وأحمق زن ذا عقل بحمق
The fool moans in his wit over folly,
يقدم إقدام الأتي المفعم
He charges with the valor of a hardy knight
يا طالب المجد إن حاولت غايته
O seeker of glory, if you seek its pinnacle
ان شارك الأدوان أهل العلى
If the eras share with the people of highness
جلبنا الخيل مشرفة الهوادي
We brought the horses, overlooking the valleys
يكاد الدجى يغدو صباحا مشرقا
The dusk almost becomes a bright morning
لك الله ما لاح الصباح وعزت ال
For you is what the dawn revealed, and the honor of spears has soared
أطعت النهى في نجدتي وبياني
I obeyed the prohibition in my support and eloquence
نعمت صباحا ما تغنت حمامة
A morning whose doves did not sing their songs
نماه طراد ذو المناقب والعلى
He was nourished, a purifier of great virtues and sublimity
ما أنصفت بغداد ناشئها الذي
Baghdad did not do justice to its youth
وخاطر من حديث المجد ساورني
Aspiration of glory's tale came over me
ألا يا أمير المؤمنين الذي به
O Commander of the Faithful, through whom
حي سعد الدين جما مجده
Hail Saad al-Din, his glory gathered
عجب العاشقون إذ راح عندي
The lovers were amazed when with me
ولا زلت حلف الصحتين كليهما
And still you swore both oaths wholly
هنيئا للمواسم والتهاني
Congratulations on the seasons and felicitations
اني خبرت علاه خبر مجرب
I have known his sublime character as one well-versed
شموس المواضي ان بغيت الأمانيا
Suns of meadows, if you wish for hopes,
أثني عليه حسنا وجهه
His face is praised for its beauty
ان الوزارة وهي معتلج العلى
The ministry, though lofty in rank
سألت إلهي أن يعيش بغبطة
I asked my God that the Imam of Guidance may live in bliss
يا إمام الحق يا من فضله
O Imam of truth, whose grace
أقول لمنطيق من الحي أفوه
I say to one whose eloquent speech flows
تعجبوا من عراقي بلا سفه
They were astonished at an Iraqi with no foolishness
تظن خطوب الدهر أني بكرها
You think the turns of fate that I fear early
هنيت بالعام وأمثاله
You were greeted with this year and its like,
أسد بات يتقي سورة الذئ
A lion now fears the howl of a jackal
أمر مطاع أتاني
A command obeyed has come to me
سألت إله العرش رب محمد
I asked the Lord of the Throne, the Lord of Muhammad
إذا ما سنى ملقاكم فات ناظري
If your meeting me happens to elude my eyes,
تخشى الصوارم بأسه
The swords fear his might,
منة الدون في الرقاب حبال
The favors of the lowly are shackles around necks
لا تلبس الدهر على غرة
Do not wear life's robe carelessly,
لا يعجزنك المجد من بعده
Glory does not make you unable
وكنت كبازي من الطير أشهب
I was like a falcon among the birds, grayish brown,
أبا الفوارس والأيام شاهدة
O father of the knights, and the days bear witness
واني لمثن ما تغنت حمامة
I am not one who praises, even if a dove
وصاحب من بني الآمال خضت به
And I have a companion of high hopes with whom
يا راكب الوجناء فاق ذميلها
O rider of the camel litter, her litter outpaced her camel
واقسم ما يممت بالعزم وجهة
I swear by my resolve which I have made steadfast
قريشي به تفخر
Quraysh take pride in him
كبت جفان الحي من دارم
The eyes of the living shed tears for their home
وما رأى الناس من قبلي وان شرفوا
None before me that people saw
تصامم السمع عن نصر ومصرعه
My ears refused aid, or his downfall to hear,
علمي بسابقة المقسوم ألزمني
My knowledge of the predetermined shares has made me
الله جار الوزير الصدر ما طلعت
The minister's bosom friend, for as long as the sun rises
راسي الحبى في سلمه ونديه
My head is in its health and vigor,
هنيئا للمواسم والتهاني
Congratulations for the seasons and greetings
حمدت إلهي مخلصا إذ تبلجت
I thanked my God sincerely as the darknesses
يغشى سراة لقاح الحي منزله
The morning dew covers his abode
وزير يفر المحل عن جو أرضه
A minister whose land's air he flees
اذا الجياد مدت الأعنه
When the racers stretch out their necks,
اذا كنت جارا للفرات وهاطل
If I were a neighbor of the Euphrates, pouring down
ونبئت والرحمن أكرم دافع
I was told—and the Merciful is most generous—
سألت ربي ورب الناس كلهم
I asked my Lord, the Lord of all people
حكيت المدية الهيفاء شكلا
I told the lowly abode my sorrows
يسح نواله من غير شيم
His generosity flows without reserve
أبا دلف ان جار بين وصرحت
O Abū Dulaf, if my neighbor becomes estranged
تبرع تاج الدين لي بنواله
Taj al-Din gifted me with his poem
اذا افتخرت عليا ربيعة بالذي
If Rabee'ah boasts of what
يا فارس الخيل تردي في أعنتها
O knight of horses that race in their meadows
بلوت خلاله والدهر خصم
I journeyed through it, and time is an adversary,
بقيت بهاء الدينِ ما وضح الضحى
You remained the splendor of faith when dawn had not yet brightened,
ألعلم ما علم العلياء واكتسبت
I gained knowledge from the scholars and acquired
هنيئا لعيد أنت شاهد يومه
Congratulations on a feast, you who witness its day
له صبر الدلاص على الرزايا
He has the patience of one accustomed to affliction,
وبالقصر أريحي
In the palace there is a breeze,
قد حويت السم والشهد معا
I have contained poison and honey together
يا من فخار تميم
O you who the pride of Tameem is for him
لئن ضاق حقي عند عوف بن خندف
If I found justice constricted with Awf ibn Khandaf
سل الحي عني هل أناخت خسيفة
Ask the living about me - did an encampment halt
خل التغزل للمشوق المغرم
Leave fondness for the beloved infatuated one
عفا ضارج من آل ليلى فعاقل
The camel stride of Layla's tribe departed while the guide
ضرب من الشعر قس الأولون إلى
A type of poetry the ancients refined
أرج النسيم فقلت نشر خميلة
The breeze blew gently, so I said let us spread out a pleasure garden,
ربعي من بني جشم
A quarter of the tribe of Jusham
يود المسف الجون تحمله الصبا
The young man longs for the gusts of the morning breeze to carry him along
كأن القنا والمشرفية بالضحى
The palace and al-Mashrafiyya at dawn
لا تحسبني أحجمت عن خور
Do not think that I held back from responding
فمن كان لي لائما فيهم
So he who finds fault with me for loving them
وصل الجواد من الجواد
The stallion arrived, from the stallions,
حي نجدا وأين من مرو نجد
O Najd, greetings! But where are the dwellings of Najd?
جرد سيوفك للجلاد وأشهر
Prepare your swords for execution and unsheathe,
بني عمنا كفوا العضيهة أنها
Our paternal cousins stopped the oppression when
كأن خطوط الدمع في وجناته
As though the tear tracks on his cheeks
وإني مع الإعراض عني لمقبل
Though you've turned from me, I'm still inclined
وجوه لا يحمرها عتاب
Faces that scolding does not make blush,
يصيب منه المسنت المحروم
The deprived are struck by his grace,
حمى الله اقبالا حماية دينه
May God protect Iqbal's zeal in guarding his faith
إباءك أن المجد يأبى التهضما
Your refusal that glory disdains being defamed,
قل للمجاهد لا زالت عوارفه
Tell the mujahid, his noble deeds still
العين تبدي الذي في قلب صاحبها
The eye reveals what is in its owner's heart
أبر صلاح الدين وابن صلاحه
Saladin and his son shone
تبلج وجه الدهر بعد قطوبه
The face of time brightened after its gloominess
كل شيء تدبيره مستحيل
Everything's management is impossible
إذا شئت أن تلقى المناقب والعلى
If you wish to attain virtues and heights,
يا مودع السر سر الله خص به
O you who is trusted with the secret of Allah's secret, and chosen to protect the religion and nations,
حزت المكارم والعلى
You earned virtues and nobility
أسدي البأس عذري الوفا
The bravest of fighters, most loyal in friendship
إذا ما الجياد الجرد شدت لغاية
If the steeds, when urged to speed,
تبارى شبا آرائه ورماحه
His opinions and spears contend in glory,
أشكو إليك نهضة سريعه
I complain to you of a sudden awakening
أقمت عماد الدين حتى رفعته
You upheld the pillars of the faith until you raised them high,
نبأ عاد له الصبح دجى
News returned at dawn obscured in gloom,
ولقد أكتم همي جازما
I have concealed my worries, determined,
قرى في حياض المجد عد فخاره
He built villages in the meadows of glory,
يسير إلى اكتساب المجد شدا
He strides to gain glory,
تعلمت البيداء فسحة صدره
The desert learned the breadth of his chest,
يعجز في مدحه وقد علمت
In praising him, the eloquent are rendered speechless
لا أوحش الله طرفي من تشرفه
May Allah not deprive my eyes of seeing him,
إن الأمير شهاب الدين غرته
Indeed Prince Shihab al-Din was deceived
أظن ظلام الحظ حان نصوله
I think the darkness of ill fate has come to an end,
أعيذكم بمجدكم ومدحي
I seek refuge in your glory and praise
أرى بقايا البيوت قاطبة
I see the remnants of homes altogether
ثنيت ركابي عن دبيس بن مزيد
I turned my riders away from Dubaib ibn Mazyad
السيف والحجة الغراء قد شهدا
The sword and eloquence, radiant witnesses
مرض الحب شفائي أبدا
My illness of love is never cured
تخطتكم أيدي الخطوب وجانبت
The hands of misfortunes have surpassed you, and avoided
إذا المرء لم يستخلص الحزم جنة
If a man does not fortify his soul with patience,
طليق الوجه أغلب هاشمي
The open-faced, most noble Hashimite
حماك حمى الرحمن من كل حادث
May God protect you from every feared accident,
ضعي لامتداحي ما استطعت من العذر
Give my praises as much excuse as you can
لمن الخيل كأمثال السعالي
For whom are the horses like the lofty clouds
قربا مني حسامي وجوادي
Bring my swords and steeds near, and see the truth of my striking and pursuing.
أسى وسرور ناصر ومخذل
Sorrow and joy both came from ‘Antarah, who helped me or let me down,
له هزة لو لا تقاه ونسكه
His zeal remains steadfast, though unrest assail,
مدحتكم للود لا لرغيبة
I praised you out of affection, not out of greed,
وفتيان صدق من تميم تناثلوا
And truthful youths from Tameem proliferated
إذا اشتملت على شمس وبدر دجى
If I encompass a sun and a moon lit night
تضمن منه حبوة المجد راسيا
The jewel of glory rests in its possession,
أمنت فقري لما قلت عن ثقة
I trusted my poverty when I said with confidence
هنئت بالعيد وأمثاله
You were congratulated on the feast and the like
الين لداود الحديد كرامة
The iron became soft for David as an honor
إذا عدت سراة الجود طرا
If generosity's instincts are reckoned as faults
توقل من عمرو العلى في منيفة
Seek glory from Amr Al-Ula in Munyfa
اذا ما انتدى حلت عليه مهابة
When he rises to speak, awe descends upon him,
شجع الطبيب وليس بابن مكدم
The brave doctor, though not a hardened warrior,
الشعر ما علم العلياء واكتسبت
Poetry taught the noble ones and gained
الله جارك من أخي شرف
God is your neighbor from the nobility of Sharaf
أحب مطال الوصل لا عن رضى به
I love the drinking of union though no pleasure in it I find,
خذ ما تشاء من الأيام أو فذر
Take what you want of the days or abandon them
علقته والصبا غض الأديم
She hung it while the morning breeze was still tender,
ولو كان لي في ذبح نفسي قربة
If my soul's slaughter brought me close,
هنيئا لأيام الزمان حلالها ال
Congratulations to the days of time, its permitted joys,
جزى الله غمر الجود من آل هاشم
May Allah reward the generosity of the Hashimites
قل للمجاهد قولا عن أخي ثقة
Tell the fighter with confidence from his brother,
هنيئا بهاء الدين للمجد والعلى
Congratulations Bahá'u'lláh for glory and loftiness
هب العذر في نطل الرغيبة أقبلت
The excuses flowed when yearning arrived
تقل رمال الأنعمين وعالج
The sands of An'amayn shift and change,
أكفكف عن سمع الأمير مدائحي
I refrain from praising the emir,
ومن السعادة للئام ترفعي
My happiness is in ignoring the slander of fools
زمان كله هجر
Time is all estrangement
تتيه جياد الخيل عجبا وعزة
The stallions of horses are lost in awe and honor
اعيذ يدا وقفا على البأس والندى
I call out in the darkness for help to defend and protect
نيطت حمائل سيفه
The sheaths of his sword are adorned
موسع المعروف رحب المنزل
The generous host has a spacious abode,
تتيه به الأيام فخرا وغبطة
The days take pride and joy in him,
الخرق يرهب لكن الأناة لها
The breach terrifies, but patience has
لئن غبت عن نادي علاك فانني
Though I am absent from your lofty gatherings,
أنت والماء يا مجاهد دين
You and water, O fighter of
حباه إله العرش جودا ونجدة
The Lord of the Throne endowed him with generosity and aid,
مظفر الدين إن فاق الرجال فقد
Muthaffar al-Din, if the men surpass,
ورب قوم عدى قد فل غربهم
Many a tribe did tyrannize, yet their pride was brought low,
بقيت أبا الفضل الذي شاهد له
You remain Abu Al-Fadl, who is witnessed for
يرجى نداه في القطوب وجوده
His generous call is hoped for in bare mountains,
هنىء العام وما يعقبه
The year was congratulated, and what follows it
اذا جارهم فاعتصم بمدامة
When fate's arrows pierce, take refuge in wine
رأيت غياث الدين في البأس والندى
I saw Ghiyath al-Din in valor and munificence
ضاقت بلاغة أشعاري بما رحبت
My eloquent poetry is constrained by what it can encompass
يفضله على ماء الغوادي
He prefers its dew to valley water,
يفر الخطب قد أمهي شباه
The speech flees; its enthusiasts have become apathetic.
عجب الرجال لفارس
The men wondered at a knight
هنا رجب الشهور وما يليه
Your existence, O Rajab, is the manliness of men
يا خيرة الله حلي عند مجتهد
O best of Allah's creations, inspire the diligent
نوال أمير المؤمنين وسيبه
The light and sword of the Commander of the Faithful,
ألا من مبلغ عني هماما
Oh herald, bear my message to the valiant one
صبرت للهجر عن انسي بقربهم
I endured the absence of my loved ones
وتحت العوالي والوجوه عوابس
And under the heights and the frowning faces
أقوال له والزهو ينغض عطفه
Words for him, and arrogance wrinkles his brow,
غرس الخلافة لا فاتتك مكرمة
You have attained honor by establishing the caliphate,
يظن الهوى العذري وجدي بمجده
He thinks my passion and ardour glorify him,
طرب الزمان وأنجمت أشجانه
The days rejoiced and his sorrows vanished,
يقر بعيني أن أراها مغيرة
I admit with my eyes that I want to see her changed,
بقيت غياث الدين ما أظلم الدجى
You remained the savior of faith when night was darkest
ولما رأيت الخيل تهدي فقاصر
When I saw the horses being led at a slow pace,
دلفت بجيش ذي زهاء كأنه
You have marched with an army whose brightness is like
لا تعجب الناس من كري مدائحه
People should not be surprised at my abundant praise for him,
عجائب أرض الله شتى كثيرة
The wonders of God's land are manifold
قوم إذا أخذ المديح قصائدا
A people, if praise poems were seized
يرش كثيف الدجن حينا وتارة
The heavy, dense rain sometimes pours down
رعاك ضمان الله ما أظلم الدجى
May God protect you as long as night's gloom darkens,
أظن اعتقاد النسخ صح دليله
I believe the doctrine of incarnation is sound, its proof returned
دأماء الجود وخضرمه
The rain of generosity and its greenery,
ملكت بك العرب الفخار وقد
The Arabs have endowed you with glory and honor
اذا قيل الكريم أخو العطايا
If it is said the generous is brother of gifts
عيك بعلوي السجايا فانها
With affection untie my fetters, for they
الحمد لله الذي نصر العلى
Praise be to Allah who granted victory to the sublime
بدا ضوء وليس من الصباح
A light shone though not from the dawn,
دعوا دمعي بيوم البين يجري
Let my tears flow on the day of separation,
ليس بمحجام اذا النقع ادلهم
Not a blood-letter when the wounds have festered,
نسجتها كالروض غب الحيا
I wove it like a garden, far from life’s din
ويا رب إن جازيت بالخير محسنا
O Lord, if You reward the benevolent with good
لا تضع من عظيم قدر وان كن
Do not over-esteem a person of high rank, even if
ترفعت عن مدح الرجال وقادني
I have risen above praising men, though need
العام يفخر بالشهر الحرام تقى
The year takes pride in the sacred month's piety,
ملكنا فكان العفو منا سجية
We ruled, so forgiving was our nature,
اصيب ببلوى الجسم أيوب فاغتدى
Ayyub was afflicted with bodily distress, so
قد لفها الليل بمدلاج الليل
The night has wrapped her in the dark blanket of night
ومعسول الشمائل من نزار
With the sweet disposition of Nizar
لقد علم القبائل من معد
The tribes have known the rank of Banu Tamim
أقول لركب كالقداح تعاقروا
I say to a troop like torches, pass around
لكل زمان من أماثل أهله
Each era has peers of its people,
أبا شجاع كمال الدين دعوة ذي
O Abu Shujaa Kamaal al-Deen, I call upon you,
شرف الدولة بحر زاخر
The glory of the state is a fecund sea
يتيه الخميس المجر بابن مهلهل
The young Thursday wanders lost, son of the new moon,
لقد علم الأحياء دان ونازح
The living have known, humbled and displaced,
اذا موسم عادت فوائد خيره
When the season returns, its benefits
اعيذ الجراز العضب أمهت غروبه
I return the young jar of my passion at sunset
لا تشمتن بمن أسا وهوى
Do not gloat over one who stumbled and fell
أداري المرء ذا خلق نكير
I shun the one of despicable character
فليت الموت اذ قدر
If only death, when decreed,
جزى الله ابن نوشروان خيرا
May God reward Ibn Nuwashrivan well,
أهم بشكوى الدهر ثم تردني
I complain of the vicissitudes of Time, then you make me turn back,
إذا خفت أخطار الطريق وذعرها
If you fear the dangers and turbulence of the road,
وبالدار ما بين الصراة ودجلة
In the house between Saras and Dajla
صحا القلب من ود الغواني وودها
My heart regained consciousness from the love of beauties and their love
إني ومن أكرموا لزيهم
I and those who are honored for their garb
تأرج عرض الدهر من نشر منطقي
The days of life blossomed with my eloquent speech,
ومن آل المظفر عبقري
From the blessed house of Al Muzaffar
رعى الله مجدا في لؤي بن غالب
Allah has nurtured glory in Lu'ayy bin Ghalib
يمل هواه كل سرج وسابح
His passion excites every saddle and swimmer
تجري السوابق للغايات محرزة
The precedents run secured for goals
دجا ليل همي واكفهرت بشاشتي
The night grew long with my worries and dimmed my cheer,
هنيئا لأيام المناسك والتي
Congratulations on the days of rituals, which
يا جوادا محرزا سبق العلى
O noble steed, you have excelled in attaining glory,
عشت قطب الدين هطال الندى
You have lived as the pillar of the faith, showering blessings,
لا أرهب الغدر ممن بات يضمره
I do not fear the betrayal of one who harbors it
هذا الغدير وحوله من عزه
This meadow and around it some of its glory
يهب الطلاقة والنوال معا
He bestows eloquence and fluency together
رأيت مواسم الأيام طرا
I have seen the seasons change
وكريم الملتقى ذو لسن
The generous host whose tongue is eloquent,
لا أوحش الله من جود أسر به
God does not abandon one who is generous of spirit
أمدحه أبلج كالنهار
I praise him, shining like the day
محمد الأفعال موفور النهى
Muhammad, his deeds abundant, his prohibitions plenteous,
وعلى الأيام من نعمائه
He generously bestows blessings every day
اذا غص الندي بحاضريه
When the valley overflowed with his presence,
كيف أنساك والعوارف بيض
How can I forget you, while the virtuous ones
من شاء يعلم ما خص الوزير به
Let him who wishes know what distinguished the minister
تبلج دين الله في كل خطة
The religion of God shone in every plan
أسيف سل أم ذرب نطوق
Is it a sword unsheathed or lightning flashing bright?
ولو شاء لم يجمع لحرب كتيبة
Had he willed, he would not have assembled an army for war,
غنمتها والكريم غنام
You gained it, while the generous are gainers,
وإني ومدحي أبا جعفر
My praise of Abu Ja'far
يبذل المال فان حل به
He spends his wealth, so if resolved with it
ممدح غمر الرداء والشيم
Praiseworthy is his complete generosity,
وأقسم لولا أحمد بن محمد
I swear, were it not for Ahmad ibn Muhammad
أبلج ما في برده معاب
The refreshing cold is bountiful
حلفت بما شادت تميم من العلى
I swore by the lofty pinnacles Tamim erected
تود سيوف الهند في سورة الوغى
The Indian swords yearn for the tumult of war,
وبالذروة الشماء من موطن العلى
With the lofty, starry summit as my home
يقظان قلب وطرف لا يغالبه
The wakefulness of an attentive heart and eyelid unconquerable
يا إمام الهدى علوت عن الجود
O Imam of guidance, you have transcended generosity
اذا موسم زان الزمان وروده
If the season has adorned itself with flowers,
بقيت مطاعا ما تغنت حمامة
You remained obeyed as long as a dove cooed,
ما أدعي فيك ما حبي ينمقه
My love for you I do not exaggerate
أصوب غمام أم نوال معذل
Is it a gathering cloud or a sad melody,
مسمهر البأس من مضر
The undaunted hero from Mudar,
اذا ما نظرت إلى وجهه
When I look upon his face
بقيت لكل مكرمة وبأس
You remained for every honor and might
لا ثل عرشكم بني أسد
No equal to your throne, O clan of Asad,
له عن الشر إعراض ومجتنب
He turns away from evil and avoids it
رعاك ضمان الله من كل حادث
May Allah protect you from every mishap,
جزى الله خيرا من امام تخيرت
May Allah reward the one whose leadership I have chosen
له بالمجد أنس مطمئن
He takes pride in glory, content and assured,
هو الطود المنيف وكل خطب
He is the towering mountain, and every peril
اجنب أهل الأمر والنهي زورتي
I avoid imposing on those of authority and command
نحن قوم من تميم بن مر
We are a people from Tameem, son of Murr
لله در غمام سح صيبه
May Allah shower blessings on
ملك الشكر نوال
The angel of gratitude, Nawal,
يا فارس الهولين عم رداهما
O knight of the two steeds, whose vastness encompasses them,
هنيئا لك الأيام طرا ففخرها
Congratulations on days that bring you pride
ومسنت حي ينكر الإنس آله
A living man whose divinity people deny
لا تلطفن بذي لؤم فتطغيه
تقيل نوشروان بعد ذهابه
أطلتم ضجاجا واعتقدتم عجيبة
أنا والزناد ببرده وتصبري
سرى ذكر فضلي حيث لا الريح تهتدي
طرقت بأشراف العذيب مسهدا
فخرت بك الأزمان والحقب
كرار بأس وجود لا تملهما
أقول لساري الليل والليل غابر
يسر العلى والمجد والحلم والنهى
نطقت بمدحي ثم أسررت بعده
لقد علم الأحياء دان ونازح
أسر بالبرق لا حرصا على الديم
حث الكريم على الندى وتقاضه
فصبح الوصل وضاح
أروم بفضلي نصرة وبمقولي
ضروب قذال القرن فذا لدى الوغى
بت حيث شئت ولا يرعك المنزل
وليس اللمى والخال زينة فطرة
تعجب صحبي أن كتمت فلم اشع
الام يراك المجد في زي شاعر
تعاظم حزني والرزية أعظم
ما كان للعين ذنب تستحق به
وما تلومت في مديح
اذا اصطبخت ألفاظه فارج خيره
كأن نجوم النوء والجو في الورى
يقحمه ويمسكه قديرا
ليس حملي مجرد الزين والظر
اعيذ قريشا أن تصيخ لكاشح
سهرت ونام عن سهري رجال
حاشا الليوث من التيا
ولما التقينا ساورتني مدامة
صيغت دواتك من يوميك فاشتبهت
قول المحرض يزداد الشجاع به
ليهن التقى والدين كونك سالما
يغب الغيث أكناف البلاد
إذا مدحت معز الدين آونة
رب رفد وإن تكاثر عدا
لا تحسبي مزح الرجال ظرافة
أظلما ورمحي ناصري وحسامي
إذا ما غزوتم معلمين فراوحوا
عفا الله عنها هل يلم خيالها
جهلت شهاب الدين ثم بلوته
منازلكم للخائفين عصام
إذا حاردت غبر السنين فيمموا
جل المقام علا ومقدرة
يفل غرب الرزايا وهي باسلة
رفقا بها يا أيها الزاجر
ينثي برأفته ونجدته
تقر بأسرار التقى خلواته
تنادوا فقالوا يا لها من عجيبة
وإني ومدح الفارس الشهم يزدن
وإني وإن لم تنصفوا في حكومتي
وصوب حيا جاشت غوارب سيبه
رعى الله نجرا خالديا تشعبت
إذا ما النجار الزينبي تكاثرت
ولما أناخ الدهر كلكل بأسه
سلامة المرء ساعة عجب
يفوق بهاء الدين من قسماته
ونبئت أن الدهر أحدث نبوة
يدر بلاغات اللسان مديحه
تود رياض الحزن وهي أنيقة
إذا ما بحار الأرض جاشت وأجلبت
وركب كالصقور سروا بليل
تأففت بالأيام ثم حمدتها
أقول وقد تولى الأمر حبر
أنت نجم الدين في أهل التقى
هناكم قدوم العام وابتسمت لكم
بقيت مطاعا ما تغنت حمامة
تتبارى أقلامه وقناه
يسيل دماء الدارعين ودمعه
أقول لصحبي والمقال تكعه
تنيخ منه معمل المطي
يا من له المجد بمجموعه
إذا الشمس غابت عن مسالك مسهل
مطهر النجر كريم المسعى
رعاك ضمان الله يا خير ظاعن
لله در قبيلة
كيف خلاص الحر من بذلة
احفظ مغيب الناس ما أحسنوا
هامي النوال في السنين الغبر
كأن عقارا خندريسا تضوعت
يود القنا الخطي صحت كعوبه
حييت يا فارس ليل القسطل
أحببته غمر الرداء والشيم
إذا أحببت فاصبر للرزايا
إن عز لقياك وماء الندى
ولينة الأعطاف خوارة
عجبوا لعلمي كيف أكتمه
أهلا بغر قوافيكم لقد طلعت
هنيئا لك الأيام يا ابن محمد
عجبت لحي لا تحل حباهم
توسع الشاعر في قوله
وقال رواة الحي لا بل غواته
كثرت روايات الرواة فواعد
تبرع نصر بالزيارة والندى
هنيئا لأيام المواسم والتقى
اني وبغداد كالمظلوم من قمر
رأيت حوبا كبيرا غير مغتفر
سلم الأمر إلى مالكه
اضطرار الحر الكريم إلى الدو
وكنت أظن في أثواب نصر
أقول للركب قد حاكت أزمتها
خير من أهمل مالا بالندى
ولما تلاقينا وللشوق سورة
أظل مريضا بالصدى دون وردكم
أأترك محيي العدل والشوق قائدي
لفخر الدين أخلاق كرام
حلفت بالواضحات الغر مسفرة
لقد علمت عليا لؤي بن غالب
وائلوا بي إلى أغر هجان
حظرت على الحي نظم المدي
وكيف يرضى بدون من تكون له
عداك الردى والذم كم من فصيحة
جمعت لك الأوصاف غير منازع
بلفظة منه يشفى داء معضلة
لم يدرجه إلى منصبه
كأن مجن الشمس فوق جبينه
يقر بعيني أن يعيش بغبطة
لقد غنيت بالقيل من آل هاشم
يفلل بالعزم الصوارم والقنا
بين الاباء وبين الصبر ملحمة
لله ما أكرمها مطيا
تقيل أخلاق أشياخه
وخائف جم الحذار مرمل
عمت شهامته كما شملت
وبيض أياد من مجيد كأنها
تحاذره شهم النزال وصيده
أغر ينوض البشر في قسماته
اذا اطباها الناضر الحزني
اذا ما علي الخير عد فخاره
يجلي العظيمة من غير فخر
كأن كأسا خندريسية
أمنع الأحياء بأسا وحمى
أبر على هطول الغيث جودا
ينيخ المسيف النضو منه بممرع
لئن ذاد مدحي بأس عذر فانني
صدوق الشيم منهل العطايا
سل الحي عني هل غشيت لغيره
شربت دما ان حال ودي ساعة
ضروب بحدي رأيه وحسامه
صارم ان خذل السيف حمى

حمدت اصطباري اذ جرى بي إلى مدى

تعدتك أعراض الخطوب وجانبت
يذل الجحفل الجرار بأسا
يكل الركب عن ابلاغ شوقي
ونبئت أن الليث قد شد أزره
هنيت يابن السادة الغر النبل
سقى الله المهيمن قبر ثاو
الحمد لله كان المجد مقتسما
يظل الدين مبتهجا طروبا
تعلقته مشمخر العلى
ولو أن نكسا خامل الذكر جاهلا

شهد العراق وكل راو بارع
اذا الأبطال مارست المنايا
بقيت وشمس الدين للمجد والعلى
تقر بفضلك الأيام عينا
مدحتكم والمادحون بني العلى
مشمر للهول غير زمل
تعجب الناس راويهم وعالمهم
وكنت أبحت الشعر حين ملكته
تهن بهاء الدين بالعام قاطعا
ويحل منه نديه
يا راكب الهوجاء لولا البرى
أقول وقد طاب النسيم بمدرجي
مهنأة بمجدك والمعالي
سعد الزمان وكل موسم غبطة
وبالكوفة الفيحاء فارس بهمة
يا فتى الخير من نوال وبأس
يا باذل المال في عدم وفي سعة
خليلي من عليا تميم بن خندف
حسام أنت لكن شفرتاه
جزاك الله مجد الدين خيرا
إذا شائبات الدهر كدرن صفوتي
معاذ الله أن أزجي عتابا
إذا ما عقيل باهلت يوم فخرها
إذا ما شكت بيض السيوف ظماءة
وأنيقة أنف يضوع طيبها
حي الوزير كريمة أعطافه
رعى الله نجرا زينبيا تألقت
أيها الناطق الذي شغل الأل
زهي المباسل لانتضاء المقصل
نكبا صمتي وخافا صخبي
كأن رياض الحزن هبت لها الصبا
أبا الفوارس والأيام شاهدة
خليلي من عليا تميم بن خندف
آبي الهضيمة شهم من بني مضر
سأبعثها بين البيوت شوازيا
ظل الأسنة لا جيران بغداد
أبا عمارة أن شطت منازلنا
أقول ودمعي مستهل وددتني
وجيش كأعناق السيول غثاؤه
