1. O night sailor floating in its darkness
Speeding between sand dunes and mountains

2. Drifting and sinking into the gloom
Like an N in a valley or a horse untethered

3. When anxiety fills him in Najd, it drives him out
To a ravine after determination

4. A prey to fear and affliction blowing through him
Like the north wind blows through slender palm trees

5. With strong resolve and burning eagerness
Needless of ripe dates and the fruit picker

6. The crown of kings and Baghdad is nothing
Compared to the crown of kings when you seek it and Baghdad

7. It salutes you with a smiling face
Full of ashes, near victory, and provision

8. Its good omen guides through every hardship
When good fortune smiles, it ensures success

9. So the soul thrives before the body with a young man
Whose kindness is between honor and help

10. The young man of Mashati when the northerly wind blows
And roars between plains and hills

11. The dwellings of Abu Ja’far though times are hard
Rushing every night visitor to grant support

12. Serene before peace and battle
For valor in the fray and wisdom in the gathering

13. His approval from his kindness is a kiss to the proud
His wrath against enemies the blow of a guide

14. I praise him though I cannot articulate his virtues
And I make my poetry and chant for him alone

15. Worry imprisons my words and releases them
Praise of one charming with glory unleashed

16. He set courtship for lovers, their love
And taught parchment to rhyme across pages
