واني وان لم يدرك الشعر وصفه

1. Though poetry fails to describe his merit
And praise falls short of his glorious fame,

١. وِاني وانْ لم يُدرك الشعرُ وصفَه
وزاد على لفظ المدائحِ مجدهُ

2. I praise him as best I can, for every man
Does what strength and effort allow.

٢. لمُثْنٍ عليه ما استطعتُ وانما
لكل امرءٍ ساعٍ قُواهُ وجُهْدهُ

3. If I could, I would not utter a word
Save those his glory moves me to express.

٣. ولو أنني أسْطيعُ لم أزْجِ لفظةً
من القولِ اِلا ما دعانيَ حمدهُ

4. He is the rain hoped for, the bounty sought;
His vehemence feared, his strictness grave.

٤. هو الغيثُ يرجى سَحُّهُ ونوالُه
وذو شُطَبٍ تُخشى سُطاهُ وحدُّه

5. As though the glorious deeds of Zainab's son
And his horse that broke the ranks were his.

٥. كأنَّ وجيفَ الزَّينبيِّ إِلى العُلى
وجيفُ جوادٍ قطَّع الخيل شدُّهُ

6. A peerless knight of Tameem aided him,
As did the nobleman of Quraish by himself.

٦. فريدُ قوافٍ منْ تميمٍ أعانَهُ
عليها قُريشيُّ العَلاءِ وفَرْدهُ
