1. O Abū Dulaf, if my neighbor becomes estranged
And turns away, after which no reunion can be hoped for,

2. Then in me is a passion whose heat cannot be cooled
By blame or by tears that reproach cannot diminish.

3. I pretend to get along with men to hide my torment,
But love for you rules me whenever I am alone.

4. And though I am bold in the strife of adversity,
In yearning for you I am a weak, abject lover.

5. I have shed so many tears that I wish
I wept blood for my anguish, and you deserve the merit.
