So the eloquent among the living were better off remaining silent.

2. You surpassed the extent of praise, so whenever
My tongue tried to mention and describe you, it fell short.

3. You pronounced praise in gatherings, broadcasting it,
Just as you pronounced the essence and principle originally.

4. You return dusty gloom to fresh verdure,
And bring back the dawn’s radiance through force made dusty.

5. You make dawn appear where calamity’s night was pitch black,
Then bend it to become a gentle morning, reddened.

6. The steadfast desire your wise forbearance, like the clemency of Ibn Khalid,
When the valorous strain to carry the greatest burden.

7. When the clamor of speeches deafens his hearing,
You see my trepidation and the breeze when it flows

8. At peace, the impulses of my heart calmly returning,
More passionate for pardon since you are most capable.

9. A noble knight who seeks glory only to rescue
And wealth only for desires and households.

10. Brandishing spears, straining steeds frothing at the mouth
When they gallop into the open plain with rattling armor.

11. The thronging of warriors so dense, as if they are
Raging torrents cascading headlong.

12. Tomorrow they will fill minds with fear and awe,
And turn valleys into withered desolation.

13. They penetrated the valley’s depths until I thought them
To be locust swarms chaotically scattered about.

14. The wildlife fled them in terror
Of being chased away, so that even jinn deserted the valley.

15. As if their cavalry in ships’ holds
Were clouds, vultures emulating the swooping flight.

16. Then I left them, whether routed in retreat
Or slain, their corpses strewn about.
