1. Shall I lie down to rest or seek the softness of a couch,
When not a single spark gleams in my palm?

2. Come closer, my halt is at Tameem Ibn Khindif,
A halt like that of my brother Urr in a rugged wasteland.

3. Ask dissolution about me, did I grow any resolve?
And the fury of the executioner, did I cower before a spectacle?

4. An-Numaniya, Sufyan, and the one
Who legitimized blood on the Day of Dogs without pouring any.

5. Kings when ignobility is reckoned, they support each other
Through favors firmly consolidated into lineage.

6. Rich through courageous might beyond foodstuffs,
And praise beyond the bestowals of Lujain and censing.

7. If the fires have died down, the pot is set by
The eye-lids of the sleepless quiverer at night.

8. The young camels are not prodded into the cinders
To protect them from the tremor of exhaustion.

9. The she-camels resorted to spending the night with the darkness
Among the livestock of the wanderer amidst the thicket.

10. You saw the guests of the Darim spending the night gathered
By the best lodging of men with a fireplace.

11. When the announcers of life sensed a visitor
Walking quickly with the evenly loaded mount.

12. And the people knew that I undertake
The endeavors of my people without ever lagging.

13. I gained through Iraq, O Zawra', a virtue
Whose fame spread between every plain and peak.

14. Through it, I transcended, in the face of every boaster,
The prime ancestor with a sweeping assault.

15. And exceeded what they attained in eloquence,
And if the Merciful prolongs my life, I shall transcend even more.

16. I say to the band of audacious campaigners take
The necks of the mounts if you hurl booty

17. To the man of open hands, Tughril son of Muhammad.
So they came with eyes almost disappearing

18. From exhaustion and the rubbing of camel litters into
A king great of munificence when visiting and departing unreluctantly.

19. Bountiful in efforts, successors and praise,
Fierce in striking with the might of heroes.

20. Spending the slender steeds in every straitened circumstance
With water skins and watering places instead of every pasture.

21. And letting the sickly camels roam freely while driving
To fresh herbage the choicest of noble beasts.

22. He is censured at nightfall by the mouths of the weaklings
And praised by vultures at the rise of dawn.

23. When the day of peace shone and his bedstead on the howdah
Became radiant,

24. I saw the sphere of the sun in the brightness of the forenoon
And the lion of valor between a throne and pillow.

25. Brave swords amidst the fray like the curved stripe of polished Indian swords
And striking like the edge of the sharpened blade.

26. And bright white swords as if what they obtain
Pours from the stream of mountains torrentially ebullient.

27. Pleasant is his friendship without a favor in return
Or mingling bounty with a promised time.

28. And a snarled lip revealing canine on raids
So narrowed on account of the places his raiding parties infiltrate.

29. Severe is the clattering of his armored men as though
He is the edifice of Al-Qara Mountains in formation.

30. Noble, bare of armor, brandishing his sword,
So no war but as a detachment fully armed.

31. I turned toward him beneath the howdah stealthily,
Thus departing while he sat between a minister and pillow.

32. The horses carried you only to raid
The quarters of Fattak and the expedition of Sayyid.

33. No shining dawn whose whiteness you did not marshalin
Structures of glory between encampment and couch.

34. Whenever a land betrays, surrendering its soil
To the hands of transgressors and rising tyranny,

35. Good fortune and felicity will march against it
With birds above it, most inauspicious and malignant.

36. And how many a weighty sin whose danger you forgave
With beautiful clemency, vast forbearance.

37. You are indeed from a people whose favors transcended
Enumeration into phrases prose or verse.

38. When showing sympathy, their stance was one of servitude
Before the throne of supreme kingship and honor.

39. Through you the crowns shine in every council
And the bright swords flash in every scene.

40. And the pillar of the faith realized the endeavor of his people
Through the perceptive opinion in the vitality of a matter green.

41. Many hands were implanted by a numerous people
But none like the white hand of the son of Muzaif.

42. With a king whose might is not disgraced
Nor his origin on the Day of the Potsherds debased.

43. O Abu Talib you gave your brother - and he did not become,
With what he generously imparted, sparing or tightfisted.

44. I came wandering from distant lands,
So be generous to me with what I deserve of wealth or even more.
