1. I have concealed my worries, determined,
While in my heart they're like spearheads.
١. ولقد أكْتُمُ هَمِّي جازِماً
وهو في القلب كأطرافِ الأسَلْ
2. Yet I see the Arabs questioning
Reproaches that are base and trivial.
٢. وأرى الآرابَ عن مسألةٍ
وعِتابٍ هي أدْنى وأقَلْ
3. And if the Law has banned silence for me,
Another has spoken, my words undefiled.
٣. واذا سنَّ ليَ الصَّمتَ النُّهى
قال غيري ومَقالي لم يُذَلْ
4. Love of the lofty faith's shining sun
Has made this resolute madness wholesome.
٤. وجُنونُ العَزْمِ قد عَوَّذهُ
حُبُّ شمس المِلَّةِ السامي المحلْ
5. So if rage comes over me,
Love rises against it, and it fades away.
٥. فاذا ما غَضَبٌ ساوَرَني
طلَعَ الحُبُّ عليه فاضْمحلْ
6. A doer, generously, without speaking,
Not dragging his feet, even saying: "I did".
٦. فاعلٌ من غيرِ قوْلٍ كَرَماً
غير ممْطولٍ واِنْ قالَ فَعَلْ
7. His love and troth-plight when he gives them
Sincere, without the flaw of excuse or boredom.
٧. ودُّهُ والعهْدُ اِذْ يبْذلُهُ
خَلَصا منْ شوبِ عُذْرٍ ومللْ
8. The more he is reproached unfairly,
The more his bounty swells, freely reproached.
٨. كلما أوسِعَ عَذْلاً في النَّدى
زادَ في ردِّهِ نُعْماهُ العَذَلْ
