Between west and east like the coolness of water

17. Pleasant to the non-Arab ear like its pleasantness
To the eloquent’s ear in beauty and grace

18. I honour it beyond describing harmonies or pleasures
And hold it higher than mentioning sobbing and lightning

19. Through it I was eloquent, the distinguished of the tribe rejoiced
And their cowards gained the eye of the sincere

20. When the slanderers’ bloodshed sought to blemish it
It cast their precious souls to the radiant east

21. And it refuses the answer of the lazy, though
The ill opinion of Farazdaq had spread notoriety

22. From it I selected when I was at its threshold
To shine brightly among Quraysh’s summits

23. Its burning flame in the settlements does not die out
When the fire does not shine for the elite

24. Quick to gain glory, not content with
Misplaced aims or stumbling roads

25. The destitute who complain take refuge in his generosity
Their refuge in the dripping rain

26. They perceive lightning in the radiance of his face
Enough to erase the asker’s overflowing tears

27. They roam through his generosity in distress with a place
Spacious and excused for tight-fistedness in virtues

28. Through his efforts, perplexed by worldliness
And in acquiring praise, firmness of purpose

29. Plentiful are the pillows of the night that reveal his face
From the coquetry of drowsiness, adhesive

30. When the vile outcasts sleep, aloof from the heights
Distant from a pillow or carpet

31. His threat is feared just as his might is dreaded
When the deep rumbling sea is like an inferno

32. Radiant in appearance, soft-spoken, named

43. The armies oppose them at night and Ibn Muhriq
Repelling Persian troops and the son of the burner

Suspended clouds on tablets

45. Firm-standing armored men as if they are
Quilted coats of mail or aloft eagles wheeling

46. The desert steeds race his horses
To a battle where victory is destined as booty

47. The morning sun laughs at them in its whiteness
And the blossoms of the nights in every blueness

48. There came before it from beneath frowning hazels

54. To bring you joy, you are a joy to your people
A delight to the worried and rapture to the frowning

55. And still you remain for merits and heights
For you are what remains of pride if it remains
