1. In the palm of glory lies exultant pleasure,
Yet with love of nobility that pleasure is tempered.

2. The neighbor fears his guest will harm his dwelling,
And events and mishaps are dodged.

3. His benevolence is tempting, and envy pursues his grace,
Like the sun and clouds in their two states.

4. Pouring and radiating, their benefit spreads,
Not contained by darkness or barriers.

5. A pioneer surpassing in every great feat,
His path is fervor, not gradual steps or stumbles.

6. When called to generosity, he obediently responds,
While to anything less, his wings refuse.

7. He has attained the utmost goal and grasped it,
So every storyteller sings his praises.

8. A delicate chain around his neck,
And in his disfavor, a fire with flames.

9. When battalions fatigue the sword’s blade,
The pens and books rise in his defense.

10. An eminent vizier, his effort has nobility,
And his pure origin an exalted lineage.

11. Where contentment is a resting place, he settles,
And should anger or unease stir,

12. They build and fortify, so every lofty one fears,
Pride ascends until the seven stars.

13. He receives the competent as he receives the unskilled, when
Tombs and lowly plots are all that remain.

14. So he came with a flood of generosity, sudden,
To follow righteousness when passions raged within.

15. So eloquence and song are routed by a hero—
Had he not shown restraint, ruin would have come.

16. Congratulations to time and days entire
For his survival; the grass thrives with the rain.

17. None but Abu Ja'far is a friend of piety;
All his days from his devotion are blessed.

18. The crown of kings and feast of night when
Winter rages and food and milk grow scarce.

19. God reward you for tending to knowledge
And company when covenants and kinship are forgotten.

20. No covenant like yours in the son of a companion
Brought joy to the eminent, prolonged glory and repute.

21. You raised from the house of Majd al-Din one deposed—
Had you not protected him, ropes would not have cinched.

22. Affectionate affinity never led you to opposition,
Nor did contention or anger make you swerve.

23. You preserved a house of ancient glory and import
Praised within for your deed by Arab and non-Arab.

24. Until you left the halls of Muslims for it
Echoing with the praise of you in all its regions.

25. Fate's hands folded it after its unfurling,
As roses and basilico gently intertwine.

26. And I, in my patience after its defeat by death,
Am more patient than a willow switch in binds.
