1. The companions of nightly revels act pompous,
Having been granted the prime of life for pleasures,

2. The hill-slopes of Sufayya are scented at dawn
With a perfumed southern breeze and languor.

3. When it is said, "Her home is in Iraq,"
It is with pure white pearls from 'Ulayya, daughter of Ghālib.

4. Trusting that the pursuer will guarantee
Rich booty - bangles and anklets taken off.

5. Wealthy generosity is not diminished by poverty,
Nor is his kindness rationed by misfortunes.

6. He who cheers the anguished and excites orations
Tempts, with disasters, the patience of his palace.

7. Bearer of the burden of passionate love and desire,
Bitter struggle its drive, though distressed by labors.

8. The best of him in dire straits aids the outcast;
The least of his assets gifts to the petitioner.

9. He divided glory and nobility among fits and starts
Of generous deeds, as well as gains.

10. Thus, none of them were absent, like those present,
Nor were those present, without the absent.

11. The meal of nightfall remains—and he is always the lord of hospitality,
Shared in tumultuous assembly and retinue.
