1. I refrain from praising the emir,
Fearing he'll think I'm seeking reward.

2. But for my fear, unrestrained,
My eloquent words would have poured

3. Like shooting stars in their beauty so fleet,
Excelling arrows however swift sped,

4. How can I not praise one who with glory replete
Filled the world and its days ahead?

5. My love and praise to him I concede,
To make them true and faithful indeed.

6. Foes flee his might and power,
His words defeat the stubborn and proud.

7. Victorious defender of God's great truth,
Bounteous, open-handed, devout,

8. Stronger than storms, solid as mountains of stone,
Than Sura's dark crags more firm is his soul.

9. He is no mere cloud promising rain,
But cloud whose deep thunder echoes its strength yet again.
