1. I journeyed through it, and time is an adversary,
With fear, or with worries, or with sorrow.
١. بلوتُ خِلالَه والدهرُ خَصْمٌ
بخوفٍ أو بخطبٍ أو بمحْلِ
2. So whatever the fortunes, what fortress,
And whatever the barren places, what affliction,
٢. فكان من الحوادث أيَّ حِصْنٍ
ومن جدْب الضَّواحي أيَّ وبْل
3. Could enclose the fine essence of praise
In swollen pride and arrogance?
٣. يَضُمُّ دَقيقَ معنىً في ثناءٍ
إِلى ضخْمٍ من الأعْراضِ عَبْلِ
4. It has the patience of armor against misfortunes
That assailed him, and virtues like arrows.
٤. له صبرُ الدُّروعِ على الرَّزايا
تخَطَّتْهُ واِقْدامٌ كَنَبْلِ
5. It cries out to those questioning it and confessing,
So it aids them, and does not heed any censure.
٥. يُصيخُ لسائليهِ ومُعْتَفيهِ
فيرْفِدُهم ولا يُصغي لِعَذْلِ
6. So Ali did not lack a house of glory,
Nor was he deprived of it, in any noble assembly.
٦. فلا عَدِمتْ عَليّاً دارُ مَجْدٍ
ولا أخْلاهُ منه شريفُ حَفْلِ
7. For Quraysh knew well what he possessed
Of the preference of excellence and merit.
٧. فقد علمتْ قُريشٌ ما لديهِ
من الفخرين اِفْضالٍ وفَضْلٍ
