أبا الهول طال عليك العصر
O Abu Al-Hol, time has been long upon you,
اتخذت السماء يا دار ركنا
O home, you have made the sky your pillar
سلام من صبا بردى أرق
A cool greeting from youthful Sabā,
صار شوقي أبا علي
My friend, the road is long
شيعوا الشمس ومالوا بضحاها
They bid farewell to the sun and leaned on its morning glow
جلوسك أم سلام العالمينا
Your sitting is peace for all people,
لا والقوام الذي والأعين اللاتي
Not by the eyes that did not betray the Master of Qena and its minarets,
أنا والله أصلح للمخازى
I will walk the road of disgrace
آذار أقبل قم بنا يا صاح
March has come, so rise with us, O companion
هو مأتم الأخلاق فاتل رثاءها
It is the funeral of morals, so chant their eulogy
خطونا في الجهاد خطى فساحا
We strode in jihad with bold steps
أعرني النجم أوهب لي يراعا
Grant me a star, bestow upon me a shepherd,
يا ليلة الوصل استنى
O night of union, wait
ماذا تريدين من مصر وصاحبها
What do you want from Egypt and its people
اللورد قال صراحة
Our Lord said plainly
مضى المفتى فصبحنا فتاه
The mufti has passed, leaving us as orphans
خليفة ما جاء حتى ذهبا
A caliph came until he went bankrupt
بين المقطم والمقطم نسبة
There is a clear relation between matter and spirit
تحبك صاحبي منا قلوب
My friend loves you with hearts
تجلد للرحيل فما استطاعا
He braced himself for departure, but could not
لمن ذلك الملك الذي عز جانبه
For whom is that kingdom whose side majesty made strong
إلى عرفات الله يا خير زائر
To the Mount of Mercy, O best pilgrim
همت الفلك واحتواها الماء
The fleet set sail, engulfed by the waters,
قم في فم الدنيا وحي الأزهرا
Arise in the mouth of life and vitalize the blossoms
سل يلدزا ذات القصور
Ask Yildiz Palace, with its palaces,
قف ناج أهرام الجلال وناد
Stand in awe at the pyramids' grandeur and call out,
ظلم الرجال نساءهم وتعسفوا
Men oppressed their wives and were tyrannical
قف بالممالك وانظر دولة المال
Stand at the kingdoms and observe the state of wealth
غال في قيمة ابن بطرس غالي
Gallant is Ibn Butrus Galli's worth
أعلى الممالك ما كرسيه الماء

في كل ليل أنتحى

في ذي الجفون صوارم الأقدار
In those eyelids are the swords of fate
يقول أناس لو وصفت لنا الهوى
People say, "If only you would describe love to us,
أذعن للحسن عصي العنان
The unruly bowed to beauty
لقد لامني يا هند في الحب لائم
The critic chided me, O Hind, about love, a blamer
يا أيها الناعي أبا الوزراء
O you who mourns, O father of ministers
ركزوا رفاتك في الرمال لواء
They buried your remains in the sands, a banner
كل يوم مهرجان كللوا
Every day a festival they crowned
سر يا صليب الرفق في ساح الوغى
O cross of gentleness, move slowly through the battlefield
الضلوع تتقد
The ribs are aflame
تولستوي تجري آية العلم دمعها
Toulouse, the torch of knowledge sheds its tears on you
أصاب المجاهد عقبى الشهيد
The mujahid attained the rank of martyr,
كأس من الدنيا تدار
The cup of life circulates
يموت في الغاب أو في غيره الأسد
The lion dies in the forest or elsewhere
اليوم أصعد دون قبرك منبرا
Today I ascend a pulpit by your grave
أجل وإن طال الزمان موافي
However long time may flow, a term is coming
قبر الوزير تحية وسلاما
The minister's grave, greetings and peace
تاج البلاد تحية وسلام
O crown of the country, greetings and peace
مضى الدهر بابن إمام اليمن

مقادير من جفنيك حولن حاليا
Measures from your eyelids have changed my state
ألا حبذا صحبة المكتب
Oh, how good is the company of books!
في مقلتيك مصارع الأكباد

O enemy of Allah and the messenger

O you who offer your cheeks,
ردت الروح على المضنى معك
My soul responded to adversity with you
لحظها لحظها رويدا رويدا
Take it slowly, take it slowly
لم يمت من له أثر
The one who leaves a legacy does not die
قالوا فرنسا أنذرت سلطاننا
They said France has warned our sultan
ليلة الأمس قد ذهبت
Last night has passed, taking with it
ديوان رامي تحت حاشية الصبا
The Diwan of Rami under the Margin of Youth
يا ناثرا حكما في الناس بالغة
O you who spread wisdom among the people with eloquence
قالوا نرى شعراءكم
They said we see your poets
يا فارسا ترجلا
O knight, dismount
أحوم على حسنكم ما أحوم
I yearn for your beauty as I always yearn
للأم والابن وللبنت
For mother, father, son and daughter
أبثك وجدي يا حمام وأودع
I confide my love to you, O dove, and entrust
لام فيكم عذوله وأطالا
There is no blame on you in prolonging estrangement
قيل ما الفن قلت كل جميل
They asked, "What is art?" I replied, "All beauty
رأيت جمادات الثرى ونباته
I saw the inanimate things of the soil and its plants
لا تدخل الحانات مستهترا
Do not enter the taverns recklessly,
تشكو الخصور من الصدور تحاملا
The birds complain of the trees' oppression
مررنا بالهلال على كريد
We passed by the crescent moon over a hill
يا ليل طل أو لا تطل
O night, linger or don't linger
يا طير مالك لا تهيج لك الجوى
O bird, why do you stir the air
صداح يا ملك الكنار
O chatterer, O king of the vineyards
لك أن تلوم ولي من الأعذار
You may blame me, though I have excuses,
أداري العيون الفاترات السواجيا
I turn my listless eyes, complaining of the wiles of their mistress,
سلام الله لا أرضى سلامي
I do not accept any greeting of peace
قد حملت إحدى نسا الأرانب
One of the female rabbits was pregnant,
روعوه فتولى مغضبا
He startled her, so she turned away angry
نظر الليث إلى عجل سمين
The lion looked upon a plump calf
يقال كانت فأرة الغيطان
It is said there was a field mouse
إن شئت تعرف حالتي
If you wish to know my state, then look at
لمن غرة تنجلي من بعيد
For whom is there a radiance unveiled from afar
أنا في تطلابه وهو لدى
I seek him while he is with me,
فديناه من زائر مرتقب
We ransomed him from an awaited visitor
كبير السابقين من الكرام
O great among the noble ones
ملَك بأفق الرمل هلّ كريما
An angel on the horizon of sand called gently,
أعفريت من الجن
A demon of jinn am I
أرقصوه بقولهم فيلسوف
They danced him with their saying he's a philosopher
لنا صاحب قد مس إلا بقية
We have a friend who's been touched but whose mind remains
لقد لبى زعيمكم النداء
Your leader has responded to the call
دمياط شاعرك الفياض مغترف
Damietta, your abundant poet draws
يا ناشر العلم بهذي البلاد
O spreader of knowledge in this land
يا قلب أحمد
O Ahmad's heart, has your love
الليث ملك القفار
The lion is the king of the deserts
أَمنس إلى كم تضل السبيلا
When will you cease leading astray,
يا دنشواي على رباك سلام
O Denshawai, peace be upon your land,
بدأ الطيف بالجميل وزارا
The specter began with beauty and visited,
سلو قلبي غداة سلا وثابا
My heart bid farewell at dawn to yearning,
يا أخت أندلس عليك سلام
O sister of Andalusia, peace be upon you,
ناشئ في الورد من أيامه
Budding amidst roses since his days of youth
أقول لقلبي والهوى يزحم الهوى
I say to my heart as passion jostles with passion
يا ملكا تعبدا
O Angel of worship, praying devoutly,
به سحر يتيمه
With it he casts a spell that makes him an orphan
دامت معاليك فينا يا ابن فاطمة
May your excellence amongst us endure, O son of Fatimah
رأى فيه عيبا وإن لم نجد
He saw a flaw in it though we found
يمد الدجى في لوعتي ويزيد
Night's gloom intensifies my torment and adds more,
سألوني لم لم أرث أبي
They asked me why I did not eulogize my father
راية الموت فوق هام العباد
The banner of death waves over the heads of mankind
كان لبعض الناس ببغاء
A man had a parrot, whose speech was always eloquent.
قف حي شبان الحمى
Stand tall, O youths of passion
كنيسة صارت إلى مسجد
A church became a mosque
أتى ثعالة يوماً
The donkey came to Tha'labah one day
ولقد ظننتك يا محمد
I thought you, O Muhammad, were in
من ذلك المطل من لحيته
From that window, with a beard like a mule
قف دون رأيك في الحياة مجاهدا
Stand steadfast in your view of life as a warrior
وزهرتين على عود يقِلهما
Like two flowers on a slender branch
فتى العقل والنغمة العاليه
The youth of wisdom and sublime melody
يا أيها الرجل المغتاب صاحبه
O you who blame your companion
بني القبط إخوان الدهور رويدكم
O Copts, brothers of the ages, calm yourselves,
جريدة للوكالة
A newspaper for the agency
خدعوها بقولهم حسناء
They deceived her with their flattering words, the beauty.
يا أبا عاصم
O Abu Aasim, farewell to a brother like you
حلو الوعود متى وفاك
How sweet the promises when you fulfill them
وهب لي ريالين تحت الحساب
He gave me two riyals in advance
كان على بعض الدروب جمل
There was a camel on a road
وهذه واقعة مستغربه
This is a strange happening
نجدد ذكرى عهدكم ونعيد
We renew the memory of your covenant and repeat it
سقط الحمار من السفينة في الدجى
The donkey fell off the ship in the dark of night
أيها العمال أفنوا العمر
O workers who toiled
ماذا رجوت من الحفاوة عنده
What did you hope for generosity from him
ما جل فيهم عيدك المأثور
How glorious were your feasts of old
فأر رأى القط على الجدار
A mouse saw a cat on the wall
أفي هذا الشباب تعف نفس
Does one's soul grow weary in this youth,
أشرق عباس على شعبه
Abbas shone upon his people
كان ابن داود يقر
The son of Dawood had a pigeon
يا رب ما حكمك ماذا ترى
O Lord, what is your judgement, what do you see
بني مصر ارفعوا الغار
O sons of Egypt, lift up the banner
أقسمت لو أمر الزمان سماءه
I swear if time commanded its sky,
من يرد حقه فللحق أنصار
Whoever wants what's right, justice will help him
قرد رأى الفيل على الطريق
A monkey saw an elephant on the road
النيل العذب هو الكوثر
The sweet Nile is al-Kawthar
تعذرت الركائب والمطايا
The camels and horses were held back,
أتتني الصحف عنك مخبرات
News of you came to me in papers
قلب يذوب ومدمع يجري
A melting heart and a flowing tear
ليس لها في الحياة إلا عبادة المال
She has nothing in life but
على قدر الهوى يأتي العتاب
According to the passion comes the reproach
ضربت بالمضاربين الطبول
The drums were beaten by the drummers
الناس للدنيا تبع
People follow the world,
حلفت بالمستره
I swear by the veiled one
اليوم نسود بوادينا
Today we live in our valley
لا والقوام الذي والأعين اللاتي
By Him who gave the nights their darkness, and the suns their light,
يا حماة الطفل خير المحسنين
O guardians of children, best of benefactors
بالله يا نسمات النيل في السحر
By Allah, O breezes of the Nile at dawn
رأيت على لوح الخيال يتيمة
I saw on the tablet of imagination an orphan girl
سر أبا صالح إلى الله واترك
Travel silently to God and leave
صرح على الوادي المبارك ضاحي
A palace on the blessed valley gleaming
أسلم محمد سيدى
Submit, my master Muhammad
إن الذي رزق المماليك الغنى
He who granted the Mamelukes wealth
تنازع الغزال والخروف
The gazelle and the lamb disputed,
يا مصر سماؤك جوهرة
O Egypt, your sky is a jewel
بين أهل الصعيد شاع حديث
Among the people of Upper Egypt a rumor spread
يقال إن الليث في ذي الشده
It is said that the lion in his mightiness
يا شبه سيدة البتول
O likeness of the lady of beauty
اللى يحب الجمال
He who loves beauty
لله ما أظرف ياله فتى
How graceful you are, O youth
من جعل المغرب مطلع الضحى
He who made the West the dawn of day
العزاء العزاء يا صفر الخير
Consolation, consolation, O wise and virtuous youth
أمينة يا بنتي الغاليه
Amina, my dear daughter
هل تيم البان فؤاد الحمام
Has the estrangement made the lover’s heart mournful,
تعزيني لذى الوزارتين
Console me, o possessor of two ministries,
أشرقت حلوان
Hulwan shone bright
بيني وبين أبي العلاء قضية
Between me and my father Al-Ma'arri lies an issue
تأتي الدلال سجية وتصنعا
Delusion comes to you pretentiously and affectedly
ملك السماء بهرت في الأنوار
O King of the Heavens, you dazzled in the lights,
أتى نبي الله يوما ثعلب
One day the fox came to the Prophet
يقولون لم تطرى عليا وأخته
They say I have not visited Aliya and her sister
لست بناس ليلة
I'm not one on a Ramadan night
قلب بوادي الحمى خلفته رمقا
A heart I left in the valley of love, barely alive,
يا قوم عثمان والدنيا مداولة
O people of Osman, life is fleeting
قدمت بين يدي نفساً أذنبت
I present before myself a soul that has sinned
أمس انقضى واليوم مرقاة الغد
Yesterday has passed, today ushers in tomorrow
أنت الكبير على المدى
You are great in the long run
يا هلال الصيام
O crescent moon of fasting, none in the firmament is like you
مطران أعطيت المكارم حقها
I gave generosity its due
يا أقرب الناس من أمين
O closest of people to the trusted one
ألا هل لي بلقياه يدانِ
Shall I meet him whom I desire? though that, alas! seems vain.
آشيم يا من بحبه نعلو
My love, for whom I soar high,
ساجع الشرق طار عن أوكاره
The East regained its glory, soaring from its lairs,
إذا ما جمعتم أمركم وهممتمو
If you gather your affairs and intend
على منازل غالي
In the dwellings of the dear
ألا بديارهم جن الكرام
In their abodes gathered the generous souls,
هذه نور السفينه
This is the light of the ship
قُل لِاِبنِ سينا لا طَبيب
Tell the son of Sina no medicine today
الأصل في كل بناية حجر
The essence of every building is stone
فيا طير يهنيك طيب الكرى
O bird, may you be congratulated on the goodness of the dwellings,
مقادير من جفنيك حولن حاليا
Measures from your eyelids have changed my state
تلك الطبيعة قف بنا يا ساري
O nature, pause for us, you who flows
ما زلت أنزل بالحدائق والربى
I still descend into gardens and meadows
قل للمؤيد ما دهاك
Tell the supporter what led you
أيها الثغر بلغت الأملا
O mouth, you have reached hopes
يا سعد إن أنت دخلت لوندرة
O Saad, if you entered London
يا كريم العهد يا ابن الأكرمين
O generous one of the covenant, O son of the most generous
بأي جواب غير ذا السيف تطمع
With what response other than this sword do you hope?
رضاكم بالعلاقة لي كفيل
Your acceptance of the relationship assures me,
ذكر الحداثة جهلها وغرامها
He recalled the ignorance of modernity and his passion for it
شغلته أشغال عن الآرام
Busy with tasks, he forgot about tranquility,
قالوا حبيب أنت تطرى شعره
They said: "Dear one, you compose poetry."
بعدت ديار واحتوتك ديار
You left your home and settled in a new home
يا مكس دنياك عاره
O Max, your life is shameful,
الملك بين يديك في إقباله
The kingdom is in your hands as you rise
حبرت مقالة جمعت فأوعت
You composed an article, collected and comprehended,
لما دعا داعي أبي الأشبال
When the caller called the cubs of the lion
سمعت أن فأرة أتاها
I heard that a mouse was mourned by
دع الأبرق والبانا
Leave lightning and hail behind
سيوف أبيه من خمسين عاما
His father's swords from fifty years ago
رأيت كلابا بدار السعادة
I saw dogs in the abode of bliss
بيتكمو أبا لهب
O Abu Lahab, the biggest house in Arabia
جثا لديها وأذرى الدمع ناظره
He knelt before her as tears filled his eyes,
وسقيمة الأجفان لا من علة
My languid eyelids not from any illness,
قد ود نوح أن يباسط قومه
Noah wished he could reach out to his people
رزق الله أهل باريس خيرا
God has granted the people of Paris goodness
لما رأيت جباه قوم في الثرى
When I saw the foreheads of a people in the dust
رأى وجهه باردا جامدا
حظوة اللورد قسمت
رآك تحب السجع حتى تظنه
ما تيمس اففك إلا عقرب ذهبت
أهل الجريدة والذين بمالهم
يا لورد كم من معان في سياستكم
للناس في أمثالهم
لقد صفعوه صفعة جل شأنها
بأبي وروحي الناعمات الغيدا
قم ناد أنقرة وقل يهنيك
أيامكم أم عهد إسماعيلا
العام أقبل قم نحي هلالا
ضج الحجاز وضج البيت والحرم
إلام الخلف بينكم إلاما
هز اللواء بعزك الإسلام
قف على كنز بباريس دفين
وطن يرف هوى إلى شبانه
يا فرنسا نلت أسباب السماء
آذار أقبل قم بنا يا صاح
تلك الطبيعة قف بنا يا ساري
جهد الصبابة ما أكابد فيك
قم سليمان بساط الريح قاما
يا ويح أهلي أبلى بين أعينهم
هام الفؤاد بشادن
ردت الروح على المضنى معك
يا حسنه بين الحسان
أعقاب في عنان الجو لاح
ابتغوا ناصية الشمس مكانا
أرأيت زين العابدين مجهزا
يا أيها الدمع الوفي بدار
اخترت يوم الهول يوم وداع
كاتب محسن البيان صناعه
جرح على جرح حنانك جلق
مال أحبابه خليلا خليلا
نبذ الهوى وصحا من الأحلام
ريم على القاع بين البان و العلم
إلى الله أشكو من عوادي النوى سهما
المشرقان عليك ينتحبان
أخذت نعشك مصر باليمين
أوحت لطرفك فاستهل شؤونا
الله يحكم في المدائن والقرى
هذه أول خطوه
قالوا تمايز حمزة
اسمع نفائس ما يأتيك من حكمي
صحبت شكيبا برهة لم يفز بها
كان لبعضهم حمار وجمل
لك خد كأنه قطعة الجلد
ماذا تريد بإبعادي وإيعادي

الله في الخلق من صب ومن عانى

رأيت قومي يذم بعض
لمن المساكن كالمقابر
يوم أغر محجل الأنباء
أمحمد فرغت حقيبتك التي
أعياد عزك للدنيا مجاليها
دهر مصائبه عندي بلا عدد
أيها البحر ألق في مصر أملا
قل للمنجم بالأرزاء ينذرنا
به هجر يتيمه
أكذا تقر البيض في الأغماد
أعزيك أبا مكسى
بعثوا الخلافة سيرة في النادى
رشاد اسمع عقدت العزم فاذهب
يأخذ من هذا وذاك بالربا
وركوبي يا صديقي وذهابي وإيابي
يقرأ ما صادف من جريدة
تحار البلاغة فيك فكيف
في ذي الجفون مصارع الأكباد
وطن جمالك
يقولون عن مصر بلاد عجائب
بنعمة فتحي قد ظفرتم بفندلى
ماذا يرجى من مثلي
أقول لفارس والحزب يدعو
هام الفؤاد بشادن
أنادي الرسم لو ملك الجوابا
إثن عنان القلب واسلم به
مملكة مدبره
جبريل هلل في السماء وكبر
يا رب أمرك في الممالك نافذ
نجا وتماثل ربانها
قفي يا أخت يوشع خبرينا
هل تهبط النيرات الأرض أحيانا
اختلاف النهار والليل ينسي
أميدان الوفاق وكنت تدعى
رمضان ولى هاتها يا ساقي
أي الممالك أيها
أنا من خمسة وعشرين عاما
أمير المؤمنين رأيت جسرا
سويجع النيل رفقا بالسويداء
منك يا هاجر دائي
ما تلك أهدابي تنظم
الرشد أجمل سيرة يا أحمد
للعاشقين رضاك والحسني
قف باللواحظ عند حدك
عرضوا الأمان على الخواطر
جئننا بالشعور والأحداق
مضنى وليس به حراك
بات المعنى والدجى يبتلي
ذاد الكرى عن مقلتيك حمام
من صور السحر المبين عيونا
ذي همة دونها في شأوها الهمم
يا ناعما رقدت جفونه
صحا القلب إلا من خمار أماني
قالوا له روحي فداه
أهل القدود التي صالت عواليها
السحر من سود العيون لقيته
سكن الزمان ولانت الأقدار
شيعت أحلامي بقلب باك
من ظن بعدك أن يقول رثاء
قام من علته الشاكي الوصب
قفوا بالقبور نسائل عمر
أحيث تلوح المنى تأفل
يا ثرى النيل في نواحيك طير
أما العتاب فبالأحبة أخلق
عظيم الناس من يبكي العظاما
أمن البحر صائغ عبقري
يا ابن زيدون مرحبا
وجدت الحياة طريق الزمر
يا حبذا أمينة وكلبها
سألتك بالوداد أبا حسين
لقد وافتني البشرى
يحكون أن رجلاً كرديا
كان لسلطان نديم واف
ألم عصفور بمجرى صاف
ما هذه الكف التي قد كفت
يحكون أن أمة الأرانب
داو المتيم داوه
كان بروض غصن ناعم
إنفع بما أعطيت من قدرة
قد سمع الثعلب أهل القرى
وممهد في الوكر
أنا المدرسة اجعلني
منتزه العباس للمجتلى
تفديك يا مكس الجياد الصلادم
سلك لآل من بني الأعمام
ملَك أعيد إلى ربوع حجابه
فداها نساء الأرض من جركسية
في ذي الجفون صوارم الأقدار
يا ليلة سميتها ليلتي
تأمل في الوجود وكن لبيبا
صحوت واستدركتني شيمتي الأدب
خل الأمور لأمر سابق جار
يا سادة واسوا الفقير
إنما البنت وإن ضاقوا بها
إلى ابن محمد أهدي كتابي
يقولون رشدي مات
زاحمت كل أخي جهل وزاحمني
كم لنا من عجيبة
أرى دنيا ولا دنيا
أروى لكم خرافة
لا تسرق الشعر واتركه لقائله
لِيعِنا كل معبود معين
يا مريضا بالمناصب
يا أيها السائل ما الحرية
أما وزهر الأنجم
بين سمع الله والبصر
زعموا اللؤلؤ من طول النوى
كان في الروم عظيم
عندي لكم منتخب
لما سمعت بنقطة
هي صفعة سر الصحافة وقعها
قد كنت لا شئ في الأنام لكي
توليت الصحافة فاستكانت
يرى كاتب المصباح في الصفع لذة
أمحمد لا تحسبن الصفع لم يصغ إليه
رأى خدك الفتان اشهى من المنى
سموه عام الكف وهو الذي
صرت أرجو بأن تكون المرجى
مرحبا بالفتى العظيم الشان
عش للخلافة ترضاها وترضيها
لقد لامني يا هند في الحب لائم
سألوا أمينا كيف يبكى الناى

بنى عبد السلام على أبيكم

ولقد يقول ابناي في نجواهما
لله أنت مؤلفا ومدونا
رحمة الله على سيدتي
لبنان مجدك في المشارق أول
غال في قيمة أبن بطرس غالى
دع ما يضرك والتمس ما ينفع
ما وصل من تهوى على أنسة
أبني أباظة إن رافع بيتكم
الله أعلم والقبور
