1. Little children rejoice
And just seeing them is the greatest joy

2. They wave the banner for Christmas day
And greet it though unaware

3. One takes pride in his toy
Another in his outfit

4. One bends like a willow branch
Another darts like a morning breeze

5. When they gather in one spot
You'd think them a blooming bouquet

6. Or when they disperse one by one
You'd think them scattered pearls

7. And what astonishment - the Muslims are most
Yes, the Muslims are far more

8. Philosophers all, they’re unanimous
As the clan and neighbors agree

9. December is for all, Shawwal too
And Shawwal for all is December

10. Not a language but pleasant bird song
Warbling meadows that chirp

11. The rich does not scorn the destitute
Nor does the fair deny the swarthy

12. Would that I knew, do little ones stray
Or is the mind what they prefer?

13. A question I pose for adults -
Perhaps adults can tell me true

14. I have a little girl past two
An angel, or even purer

15. With eyes the hue of sky
Teeth, exquisite jewels

16. She came asking for a toy
To break, as is the way with toys

17. I said: Angel, you wish for peace
And peace I do not forbid

18. But before you the Messiah failed
And the Emperor’s manifesto broke

19. So do not expect peace from either world
For beasts tear as beasts will tear

20. And he who loses out among wolves
Will be the wolves’ gain for sure

21. If you wish the life of adults
All will placate or take guard

22. Gives peace should you light its spark
Haply you'll love it as a lass

23. And keep it as you grow
In it lies life for its holder

24. Glory and pride it endows
In it lies sturdy, standing peace

25. For those who opt for peace
But woe to her who holds on to hate

26. And woe to him hate holds
She answered, though words weren’t hers

27. But eyes can communicate
Amazing, such talk for me, father

28. Is it ill you order me?
You make your daughter love war

29. Though peace for me is best
While you, kind man dislike harm

30. Seek not, nor order it
I said: I've strayed from the path

31. And many stray yet pardoned
Were messengers called as one

32. Books gathered on a page spread
The ancients and their deeds

33. The late ones and theirs deferred
To rise between them speaking

34. A podium Heaven lent
Saying: Peace loves peace

35. And for it rewards galore
The servants turned deaf, heard not

36. The servants turned blind, saw not
