1. The fox appeared one day
In the guise of the preachers

2. He walked the land raving
And cursing the deceivers

3. Saying, "Praise be to God
Lord of all beings"

4. "O servants of God, repent
For He is the refuge of penitents"

5. "And abstain from fowl, for sustenance
Is the sustenance of ascetics"

6. "Seek the rooster to call
The dawn prayer among us"

7. So a messenger came to the rooster
From the imam of devouts

8. He presented the matter
Hoping he would be gentle

9. But the rooster apologized
"O most misguided of the guided"

10. "Tell the fox on my behalf
On behalf of my pious ancestors

11. Of those crowned, who entered
The accursed belly"

12. "That they said, and the best of speech
Is the speech of the wise"

13. "Mistaken is he who thinks
The fox will ever have faith"
